It is of a firework, red white and blue. When I ungroup it, it doesn't ungroup by colors, it ungroups every single cut. So I try to trace by color. When I do that, the red parts pick up all the colors, even with the lowest tolerance. Is there an easy fix to this? Is this the "fault" of the design? I hope this makes sense! Thanks!

Okay, assuming I'm understanding you, you have the cut file and want to separate it so all the blue parts are in one area, red in another and white in another? What I would do is copy the design so you have three copies, ungroup each one and then delete the extra colors from each design. So for the first copy, you'd delete all the white and blue and be left with red, etc. I'm not sure why you'd want to trace the object as it should already be a cuttable file if it's an SVG, unless it's a print and cut? Can you share the Silhouette Design ID, that way we can see it, which might help.
(To see the Design ID, go to where the file is in your library. Hover over it with your mouse and an enlarge icon should appear in the bottom right. Click on that and it will bring up all the file's info.)

It's design 297419. I am used to designs that when you ungroup them, all the reds stay together in a group, all the blues stay together, etc. And not having to delete or move the colors I do not want. So I thought if I traced by color, I could keep the colors together that way. I haven't bought many designs from Silhouette, so maybe this is normal. And I know just enough about svgs and Silhouette to be dangerous!

Okay thanks, the ID number helps! Yeah, I get what you're saying about the colors being grouped, I think it depends on the designer and how they set up their file. Sometimes they don't do almost any grouping, or they group really weird stuff together, totally depends. I think in this case, I'd still recommend my method of copying and deleting the colors you don't need. Or, you could manually select them and group them together, then separate the designs or turn cutting on/off for different groups. There's a couple different ways you could do it, but I don't think there's an easy shortcut, it will take a few minutes to do. ****** Okay, after I typed that and before posting, I decided to google "silhouette studio select by color" and this article from Silhouette Studio came up. Looks like there's actually a tool that will make this easy! I've never used it so I didn't know. So maybe try that!

wendifful thanks for all your help and for understanding what I was saying. I will check out that article too. Oh, one more question, LOL. There is really no way of knowing how a design is grouped until you buy or download it, correct?

edie3, what machine are you trying to cut the SVG file on? I’m guessing it isn’t a Silhouette, or there would be no need to pay for the higher cost of the SVG version of the file. The Silhouette School instructions are for separating colors in the Silhouette software, for cutting on a Silhouette. If you bought the SVG to cut on a Cricut or other machine, you may need to select each part of the design by color, and group those pieces by color, using whatever software your machine uses. Once grouped, you can move each color group to a different part of the cutting mat so that you can cut each color separately. Another way would be to duplicate the design three times, change each to a different color, ungroup or release the compound path, then delete unwanted parts. Group each color when done, then overlay them to see if you like the results, then separate the color groups for cutting if you are satisfied.

scrapnnana it is a Silhouette. I was confused on what to order, so just went ahead and ordered the SVG. I was able to cut it by copying and removing the colors I didn't want. I probably made it harder and more expensive than I needed to.

Just buy the regular Silhouette versions in the future. The SVG is for those who own different cutters, such as a Cricut.

Oh, one more question, LOL. There is really no way of knowing how a design is grouped until you buy or download it, correct? Sorry edie3, I totally missed this question yesterday. Yes, you're correct, there's no way to tell how something is grouped until you have the file.

They always offered the Silhouette version of the file, but offering SVG files came later, although SVG versions of the designs have been available for quite awhile. I have come across designs that only had the Silhouette version, but not very often.
