e pre-Reagan era, flying in the United States still had a whiff of glamor. In the 1950s, Pan Am passengers in economy dined on stuffed guinea hen, while those in first class enjoyed scoops of caviar and eggs made to order.

I remember those days. When I was a kid, the meal tray also came with a mini-pack of cigarettes. Once I was a teenager, I would spirit them out, because that was the only way I could get my hands on cigarettes (that I knew of).

I flew for the first time when I was five. The stewardess pinned wings on me and I got to go up and down the aisle giving out chiclets. Flying use to be actually fun.

If I remember, I usually request a vegetarian meal as they seem to be better than the regular meal.

The first time I flew was in 1966. I was six and wore a new dress for the occasion. My nine year old brother wore a sports jacket and bow tie. We flew economy on Braniff from Oklahoma City to Denver with my grandmother.
On that short flight, they served a hot meal served on porcelain plates. The eating utensils were metal and the napkins were cloth.

Planes now carry up to 13 times many more people than they did in the 50's. I think the "fun" is gone because they are actually managing many more people. I'd still appreciate a box of Chiclets though.

I would rather drive. I am no longer in a hurry. I love tourist traps, roadside cafes and truck stops. My favorite campground is a Best Western. For me, it is no longer the destination, it's all about the trip.
