If you had a new sheet of unmounted rubber stamps, would use a cling foam like EZ Mount or try just applying Tacky Over-and-Over (which I've also heard you can do).
My concern about the latter method is that it would be fine on an acrylic block, but in a platform you'd have something thicker than a polymer stamp but thinner than a cling-foam-mounted rubber stamp, so it wouldn't stamp right with either set up.

I would be afraid to stamp without the cling foam. Although if you have a foam mat that you use under your project then I guess you wouldn't need the cling mount.

I would try it without it first , you can always use extra foam, fun foam in the platform.

Before we moved halfway across the country, I had to take all my stamps down to bare rubber, to cut down on weight (I had/still have a very, very large stamp collection). I painted the back with Aleene’s Tack-It-Over-and-Over on the backs. They work just fine in my stamp platform, and appear to be the same thickness as my clear stamps (also a ridiculously large collection). I have NO regrets other than I should have done it sooner.

So, when you unmounted them from wood, you also removed the cushion that is typically found on commercial wood-mounted rubber?
The one I recently unmounted, I left the cushion.

I removed the cushion, too. At first it was by accident, but I really like it. I can store more bare stamps than if I leave the foam cushion on.

Very interesting. Thank you. I imagine that with no cushion, they store in plastic sleeves/pockets/envelopes, just like polymers.

If you have a solid polymer stamp, you can use it on your block or stamping platform, and your rubber stamp will stick to it. I much prefer this way because it's less messy and makes storing the rubber easier. This is a big sheet, but you can find other sizes. stores.purpleoniondesigns.com/clear-mounting-stamp-6-x-6/

What I have is a 6 x 6 sheet of uncut unmounted rubber. I think it’s ~10 or so individual stamps. My understanding is using mounting cling foam you adhere the uncut foam sheet to the uncut rubber and then carefully cut the stamps apart. Probably store them cling to a plastic DVD case If I were to try just using adhesive to make “naked” cling rubber, I’d cut, apply glue, let dry. Store on a piece of acetate with a card stock insert in a sleeve like polymers. If I understand your suggestion moraie, I would cut the rubber apart, get a polymer sheet large enough to hold the largest rubber stamp, and use it to attach the stamps to a block or platform for stamping. But how do you store the loose rubber?

Yes, I store my bare rubber stamps the same way that I do my clear stamps.

i would put Tack It Over on it and put a foam sheet shim under the paper if i was using a stamp platform.

This is a timely discussion for me because a local thrift store has unmounted rubber stamps for sale. It had to have been someone's collection. They are stored in envelopes that were sealed and cut down to 6 x 4.5 inches. The envelopes are hand labeled; I can tell from some of the brands (Stampin Up, Hero Arts) that the owner unmounted the stamps. The stamps are sticky on the back and stored on plastic(?) sheets. There isn't any cushion. I've been hesitant to buy, but for a couple bucks, I can buy and try some of your suggestions.
I also have old Club Scrap stamp sets to use. Those are unmounted.

That’s what I bought.— an unmounted CS set from 3019.

But how do you store the loose rubber? Boy this is a late reply! It's been a little crazy here, so I haven't been on much. I hope this still helps for later. This is a video that Sandy Allnock did, and it shows how to use the polymer sheet. The sheet she used is exactly like the ones that MFT makes for mirror image stamping, and Waffle Flower just released a set for holding stencils, so lots of places to find them. I use a big sheet when I use my misti, and i have some old solid square and circle stamps that I put on my blocks when I hand stamp. www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDdmw_CKi1I&t=82s Part of why I don't like foam mounting is that the foam shrinks over time and the adhesive gets gooey and the stamp will start sliding off. I don't like putting the sticky adhesive sheet on my stamps or blocks because I just get tired of cleaning up sticky. With the polymer, there's no sticky anywhere. As far as storage, my smaller ones I keep in old slim cd cases that I've popped the circle piece out of. The thinner case keeps them in place without help. Larger ones I slide into regular stamp pockets with a piece of laminated paper for support. I'm sure other people have way better systems, but it works for me. Some people suggest covering a piece of chipboard with press and seal, but I don't care for that so much because the press and seal releases it's dots as it ages, and then you have to rub off all the gunk.

I unmounted my stamps in 2015, prior to our move halfway across the country. With the Aleene’s Tack-It-Over-and-Over, there is no sticky issue. I use page protector pockets. I stamp the image on card stock and slip it in the page protector. I slide the stamped card stock into the page protector, and my stamps go on the front. I keep my stamps in zippered binders. It works well for me. My collection is insanely large, but I have them well organized, and can find whatever stamp I want or need extremely fast, despite my huge stamp collection. Those stamps that have matching dies are stored on magnetic sheets in Artbins. Again, my dies are also well organized, despite how many dies that I have.

As it turns out, I have so.freaking.many projects and classes in various states of partiality that I haven't even looked at this sheet of stamps since I bought it. So all replies are timely! I have the Aleene's and it is worked well enough on the stamp I unmounted earlier. The Waffle Flower grip mat is already on my wish list. I'll take a look at that video over the weekend.

Does anyone else make a clear mounting stamp besides Purple Onion?

I purchased the Purple Onion versions from Simon Says Stamp because they had free shipping and they arrived today. I can't wait to play with them! On some of my older rubber stamps, the cling mount has shrunk or gotten funky. Hopefully I can remove the cling mount cleanly and then play with my stamps again.
