Going to mattress firm to try out mattresses with dh. Would it be weird to bring our own cover? Last week, when I checked out mattresses at Macy's the teenagers jumped over many and noticeable disarray and stains. Just seems weird to lay on a bed to determine the best one.Just excited that dh wants to go! Wish me luck. Any tips welcomed.
Update: I didn't bring a blanket. I did notice and mentioned to the salesman that the some of the mattresses had many pills and would pilling occur over time. He said probably not because the pills are from customer's jeans and harsher fabrics rubbing on the mattress tops and wont have that at home. Wouldn't you think the mattress company should run a depiller/shaver over it? Idk seems like an easy fix. But we bought an adjustable Posturepedic hybrid. I didn't realize that the adjustable frames can be used with our existing sleigh bed. Hopefully, the head incline will help with my snoring. Thanks for all the replies.

Yes I think it's weird to take a blanket - you aren't laying on them naked...you're wearing clothes that you are going to wash. I tested mattresses a few years ago and I laid on several without a second thought. Most people probably don't. but I did wear shoes I could slip on and off easily...It felt weird to lie on a bed with shoes on.
My tip is always haggle over the price, you should be able to get a good discount, I got almost 50% off.

I'm still wearing masks indoor around people as per doc recommendation and I wouldn't even think of bringing a blanket.
I recently bought a mattress and went to one of those unmanned stores and didn't give a blanket a thought. No mask either as I was all alone in there.👍

I always thought mattress shopping was pretty gross even before the pandemic. I would be more inclined to bring my own pillow though. I don’t like using theirs and find it hard to test without a pillow.
However, if you’re more comfortable with a cover of some sort then just do it. The entire process is awkward anyway so do whatever you want and don’t worry about what anyone thinks.

Sorry, but I think it would be weird. Would you take a chair pad to sit on if you were buying a chair or couch? What about in a restaurant? Who knows what’s been spilled of those! But I would think twice before going back to a bed store that allows people to walk on their beds.

That makes no sense to me...because then you are taking home a pillow with all the stuff on it that you are worried about. Pillows are hard to wash, but face & hair are easy to wash.

I am in agreement that I wouldn’t think twice about laying on a bed or pillow and it wouldn’t even cross my mind to bring something to cover the mattress. But I am very chill on the germ factor…very chill I have learned from my time here. 😆😆
I agree about wearing slip on shoes as I had to take off my shoes to really feel comfortable on the bed.

I don’t think it matters how weird anyone else thinks it is. This is an expensive item that you will be using for years to come and it affects your health and how good your body feels every day. If you need a light blanket to be able to relax enough to truly be able to test out the mattresses then bring it. I agree with the peas that say to bring your own pillow. For me at least, as a stomach sleeper it really impacts how I lay and how comfortable I’ll be. I’d need my pillow to be right to be able to fully concentrate on the mattress. It’ll be in a pillowcase, and both light blanket and pillowcase are super easy to throw in the washing machine when you get home.
Good luck finding a set you’ll love!

Yes, that's bizarre.
We went mattress shopping a couple of years ago. We were offered a pillow cover (it looked like an extra large napkin). After we got up from a mattress, they sprayed Lysol over it. For mattresses that had controllers, they wiped them down.
This was done at two different stores.

Taking your own pillow makes sense for a number of reasons but a blanket? Not really. If you want to, go ahead.
My tip is that you can always make a mattress softer with toppers but you can not make one firmer. Unless you get a sleep number bed which is what we have and we love it. (There are numerous mattress threads on the different types here already.)

I don't think it's weird. It will far less annoying to the sales staff than someone who leaves a stain!

I would not. And you LIE on the bed, not lay. You lay an egg. Sorry I think this is my first ever pea grammar police post! Where’s my badge lol

I bet they see weirder stuff than someone wanting to bring their own blanket. Most mattress places these days have a try it for XX days at home policy so if you decide you didn’t like it after all you can return it. All the mattress places we’ve gone to in the recent past have disposable pillow covers they put over the pillows so I wouldn’t even worry about that. I wouldn’t want to bring my pillow from home though. I don’t like bringing my own pillow on vacation to a hotel either. At least a blanket or sheet would be easier to wash if you did decide to bring one.

When we bought our mattress last year every single place had us use these mattress cover mats to lay on to try the mattresses out.

It's fairly thick so it can't rip. I take mine off when I find one I really like, you can get a better feel for it.

It just felt weird to lie on a bed with shoes on, so in order to test it properly, I had to take mine off.

You said the plastic at the bottom "it's fairly thick so it can't rip" why does that matter if I have no shoes on?

Sleep number has hospital type liners that they lay down for you. Mattress firm might do the same.

I was just describing the plastic in case other places in the world don't do the same thing. Just saying plastic is a reason people can leave their footwear on. It wasn't all directed at every part of what you said. Sometimes when you quote someone you reply in part to what they said and also add another thought separate from what the quoted person says. Sorry, I didn't realize mattress commenting was so controversial.

If it makes you feel more comfortable, take a throw in a big tote bag. Then, if you feel you need it get it out. I totally get the gross factor. Buying mattresses is weird and awkward anyway - I'm sure the salespeople have seen everything!
