I am a Mac person through and through, but a long-term work project is going to require a Windows-based laptop. I've been making my Mac work, but using some specific software that's Windows-only through Remote Desktop is getting tiring.
I'll be using exclusively for basic web stuff, Microsoft 365, and this industry-specific software. Don't need a super charged processor but do want a decent amount of RAM. My top two priorities are lightweight/portable - 13" is ideal - and a keyboard/trackpad that rival the one on my current 2022 MacBook Pro. I travel A LOT and am using the laptop as-is very often, so while I do connect to an external monitor/keyboard/trackpad when I'm at a desk, the machine also needs to be pleasant to use when I'm sitting on a plane or at an airport.
I haven't bought a Windows machines for at least 20 years. What would you recommend for my situation?

See if the ASUS Zenbook at 13" will work for you.

I had a Dell XPS that is pretty comparable to my Macbook Air.
ETA: Look for an SSD. The biggest difference between a PC and Mac is the boot time. An SSD (maybe that's what they've all gone to now?) helps some, but my XPS with an SSD still took a lot longer than my Macbook to boot.

Omg it didn’t even cross my mind that some might still have spinning hard drives 🥴

I've been happy with my Lenovo from Costco.

Do they still have Microsoft stores? Maybe they could help.

Do they still have Microsoft stores? Maybe they could help. I highly recommend buying through Costco - their return policy and warranty is much, much better than any other retail outlet. I had an issue with a printer and was genuinely shocked how awesome they were - I'm a huge fan and buy everything through them.

I would need to talk to someone before buying a Windows laptop because I know nothing about them. I don’t even know what the latest OS is or how much power I need to do what I have to do. I do love Costco, and I would buy from them after I knew what specs I wanted.

I use Parallels on my Mac to run Windows and my Windows-specific software. (Tax prep, usually) It's seamless and much easier than it used to be.

I love my Surface Pro. You can detach the keyboard and use as a tablet style. Small enough to easily fit in a handbag. My daughter as a Surface laptop and loves that.
We both bought ours as refurbished.
