Do you journal on your layouts?
I went through a period where I did and now I don't.
I have multiple reasons for that: -I don't want to ruin the aesthetics of the layout -I don't leave myself room for it -I can never find a white pen that doesn't immediately dry out -I don't scrap in chronological order so sometimes I don't remember the story -A lot of times I just scrap a photo of the kids because they are cute in the photo. There isn't any story. They just look cute. -My handwriting is wonky
Fortunately, I posted a lot on Facebook when the kids were growing up and when "memories" comes up every day I take screenshots of what I wrote about the kids. I'm hoping to incorporate that into my layouts. I feel like I should get some of those stories down. So I have a love/hate relationship with the idea of journaling.
Because my memory has holes in it I though I might show the kids some of my scrapbook pages and have them write down what their memories are of the photo. I kind of like that idea so I think I could talk at least one of the kids into doing it. I might have to dangle some kind of compensation to get them to take the time, but it would probably be worth it.

Yes, journaling is my favorite part of scrapping. It's rare for a page of mine to not include some. That doesn't mean I have super mooshy-gooshy journaling on every page (although I do on some!) but 95% of the layouts I make have at least a few sentences.
My biggest fear is that I will have dementia when I'm older (and considering my grandmother and great-aunt both did, it's a possibility) and not remember anything so I'm scrapping and writing it all down now.

Yes, definitely, I have journaling of some sort on most or all layouts. Sometimes I hide it behind a photo and it’s not super obvious that it’s there. I do that when I don’t leave room or I don’t want to see a lot of handwriting, plus I like the idea of someone finding it later. Journaling can just be who, when, etc in my opinion, when there’s not much of a story behind the photos.

If I remember anything or have something to say, I journal. If not, I'll date the layout and maybe include names. Right now I'm working on some pages with photos from 1999. Those pages have no journaling, just month and year for the date, and names on one or two pages.

It depends - if there's a story - yes. If it's just a pretty photo? probably just the date/place.
I do rely on FB to help me journal some of the older photos - I'm not a chronological scrapper either.
I don't care for my handwriting so unless it's just a quick note, I tend to type my journalling on the computer. But I do try and include it sometimes

I love to tell stories, so some pages have more journaling than others. I often add a little bit of "feels" to the story, even if it is only expressing my gratitude for either being part of the experience or the recipient of shared photos.
I usually have at least the date and place on the LO. Don't always name the people in the photos. I am more likely to check my iPhone for details about date & place than for anything else. And if two brothers are not together I sometimes have to text my ddil to ask which one is in a particular photo before I name him in the caption.
Unless it is really long, I usually handwrite my journaling. I used to hate my writing, but have become used to it. It is easier to squeeze into the spaces that are left and it is quicker than typing and printing.

I probably journal on 70% of my layouts. The other 30% either have no story or I was just scrapping for the fun of it rather than memory keeping.

I think I've only journaled once (meaning writing to tell a story about something), in my scrapbooks.
I do use store bought titles or sayings or I make my own titles and saying using alphabet stickers or chipboard to make a word(s). Not every page, but every grouping of photos (some photos are a 2,5, 8, 18, etc.. page spread) has a title or saying or photo of a sign indicating the place, the event, whatever is happening, etc... that is my version of journaling.

I'm not really a "story teller" but if there is a story around the photos then I'll try to add it. I'm not mushy though so it's usually just a funny story or more about the facts of the pictures. Sometimes I have just a great pic I want to scrap with no real story. I try to at least include the date on layouts (month if I know it & year) as well as any names. I have handwritten my journaling and used the computer.

The story part means a lot to me but I also get being creative is a big thing too and also cute photos don’t always have to have a story. Who, what, when and sometimes where will suffice.

I usually jot down a sentence or two, nothing elaborate. Sometimes it is just the date and a title. I have never written an entire story out on a page.

It depends on whether there are some details about the pictures that I want to remember. I usually use some sort of journaling card. I just hand write since I’m too lazy to type them. Kind of gives the page that home made look (Haha).

I often add a little bit of "feels" to the story, even if it is only expressing my gratitude for either being part of the experience or the recipient of shared photos. This sums me up pretty well. Some pages have a lot of story, particularly if it was a big event, or a travel destination where I want to include some of the history or significance of the photos as well as my reaction to it. Other pages might only have a couple of sentences because they are as much about having fun making pretty pages as they are the story.

I at least always include the who, when, and where. I try to add a little more. This comes from having my paternal grandmother's photo album with no info. Fortunately, my dad and I visited his older cousin who had a remarkable memory. She was able to identify almost everyone.

I am another one that dislikes their own handwriting. My solution to that is if I have a story to tell, I write on back of layout. Or on a separate piece slipped in back of layout. I had a stamp made years ago J.O.B. Which indicates journaling on back. That way if my kids or whoever is really interested they can take out and read. Our handwriting is a part of us, but try as I might, still looks sloppy to me. Just keeping it simple on the layout itself is pleasing to the eye imo

Oh artbabe, you come up with some of the best topics! I like to at least add the date or place of the photos (if I know) but in-depth journaling is hard for me. Of course a lot of the sbs I make are for other people so I try to leave room for them to add their own journaling. I think having the kids add some of their own thoughts is a great idea. Wish I'd done more of that.

I agree, artbabe your topics are great! I journal on (almost) every layout. I can think of two layouts in the last three years that I haven't journaled on. I try to get the "who, what, where, when" questions answered with my journaling, at the very least. If the photos are more recent and I can add more, I do, but I don't stress too much about journaling.

My journaling is usually super basic, just who and where/what. I usually scrap multiple photos so it doesn’t leave me with tons of room for journaling, and I try to tell my story with the embellishments I choose as well.

Yes, I include (often extensive) journaling on each layout as part of its design.

I do journal, but typically it's the basic facts. I mostly scrap events, so it's self explanatory. If there's a story behind something like just a close up of a person, it's a couple of short sentences.
I'm terrible at doing lots of journaling. It's a me problem.

I don’t think I’ve ever made a page without journaling. It’s my favorite part of the page. In my mind the pictures are just to punctuate the story. My journaling now is a bit here and there on my PL spreads but I’d say I usually have more journaling on my PL spreads compared to other ones I typically see. I do both typed and handwritten. Handwritten is so. Much. Faster. But I like the look of typed more and I can fit much more words into the same Space so it usually wins.
