I came here for a purpose. This board is FULL of self appointed social Justice Warriors and advocates.
How did Juneteenth not register? Granted, I haven’t read every single post- but it sure isn’t a topic.
How did our mostly white, affluent, democratic board show support in our communities? I’ve freely admitted I’m a Republican, but I also love a lot of people. Also, I don’t usually wish happy birthdays, or random mothers/Father’s Day posts. But, today- not ONE of my social media friends acknowledged Juneteenth today. Even the black people? Even the the people with black family (mine!!)
I just felt like it should be acknowledged and I simply put up a quote (avoiding the amazing quotes by the Obamas)… and simply said I can’t imagine a better reason for a holiday.
I guess my point is (if I have one- other than annoyance that we, as white people, avoid showing solidarity) it’s gross. I’m not friends with anyone here, specifically or in person, but we really need to do better.

We will literally have multi page threads about going to an in-laws house- but this whole holiday? Nothing.
Where are we? How do we advocate for this not to be an “eye roll” holiday?
People are so scared of cultural appropriation, we just don’t talk about it? It’s been a thing for 2 years!!!! I’m not a Dad! I can still participate. Right? (As usual, I’ll take the feedback into consideration… but damn- I think Juneteenth could have a MUCH better name- but I stand by what I said. I can’t think of a better reason for a holiday.

I think Juneteenth is a great name and long-deserved holiday. Yes, it would have been nice if someone had posted a thread, but (erm) I’d like to point out, YOU could have done that, rather than post a hand-slappy thread instead. I know you’re a Republican, but I don’t think of you as a loonytoons one. Just another person, with slightly different views.
Personally, I don’t make a big deal about most holidays, wouldn’t think to post a thread about one, and this is no exception.

I have been hearing a lot about it. our community had multiple celebrations of it.. my adult child even saw the downtown parade. I don't go out to events much for various reasons. but we talked about it at home.. I've read essays about it. so I would say I paid attention, but didn't actually "do" anything. we also talked about at church.. the minister talked about it.
one of the things is that it is a very new holiday.. even martin luther king jr holiday took a while to "catch on". most federal holidays have been around for decades... so I think it will grow and I am very happy it is now more part of our national story.
Having worked as a park ranger in historical national parks, I would say most Americans are rather ignorant about the country's history. history has been badly taught for many years. it is getting better.

For the record… I did. I also lived life today and this was my downtime. This isn’t hand slappy. Unless you consider that it’s an acknowledgment of other-ism or duality. I also acknowledge that you are a genuine person, and seem genuine in your openness. This isn’t about you ❤️ ETA tag lucyg

I don’t recall posts about 4th of July as a celebration of our freedom from England. Those posts are just about fireworks, meals, family gatherings. I don’t see posts about MLK day. No posts about Father’s Day. I don’t even think we had a post about Memorial Day. I am not sure we had a specific Pride Month post. I don’t recall posts in the past on June 29th either. I think Juneteenth is a day that should be celebrated, but your post comes off pretty rude. There were no celebrations or events in my large and liberal city today. I don’t have anything Juneteenth specific to post about. You say it could have a better name. Do you know why it is called Juneteenth? I find that comment of yours either ignorant or rude.

Put the 2 together and you have Juneteenth. 🤦♀️

Call MY post ignorant or rude lol I guess in my real life I considered it more important than National Pancakes Day or Siblings Day. I expected more from my real life people. And I was disappointed. But to come here, to self appointed social warrior land- it was a massive disappointment. That’s my damn point. Why no celebrations? (Ok- our world is swirling and dangerous….) but why nothing HERE??? From people that will call out a turn of phrase and “educate.” Just seems strange. And. Quite frankly, I see it as a bunch of white, wealthy, entitled people weren’t interested. And if you find that rude- eh. Whatever. If judgements here hurt my feelings, I’d have been gone a long time ago. But. Listen to what I am saying. I’m pissed my PERSONAL FOLKS didn’t GAF. Then I came here. SAME. That’s our story as white America. We literally had a reason to celebrate (y’all. We celebrate pancakes.) and we dropped the ball hard. You can center life on this board (delusional.) But if enough of the country felt the way y’all feel they do, I’d have seen something! I literally hope that people are better than they are.

Maybe I should say: I was pissed my personal life people DGAF. And I came here tonight. Maybe to vent?
Then I realized… no one here seemed to GAF either. Sooooo
Pull me out as rude and ignorant. You know. I’m ok with that.
This is a legitimate, important and meaningful holiday. It means something. Judge me for it- but I stand by that.

Black people have celebrated Juneteenth for decades. No one cares if white Americans celebrate it or recognize it.

I've been living under a rock or something as I had no idea that it was made a federal holiday. Now that I'm retired, I am not exposed as to what holidays my employer would be giving the employees off, so until my son told me, I was in the dark about the holiday.

I posted on Social Media a couple of things about it. for people who might not be aware. I also went to a junteenth festival. yesterday. But I did not post here. By your definition I dgaf about any holidays. It is a legitimate, important, and meaningful holiday. Your post does nothing to honor it.

Unless you are descended from enslaved people or sitting and reflecting on your ancestors who lost their lives on ships or in bondage, Juneteenth is probably not for you. It’s a day for black people. It’s fine to let it continue to be that. Most non-black people had no idea what it was and many blacks outside Texas didn’t know. White people you are 100% fine not posting a happy Juneteenth. Happy day Texas finally let you out of bondage. Sounds like a hard pass for the white folk and black America thanks you.

Sooooo it feels like you waited all year for the chance to berate the "social justice warrior ladies" and you've found an in and are riding it full throttle. You are outraged. Got it.
I actually discussed Juneteenth with a black friend who wanted to know when my next vendor event was. I told her there were openings at the Juneteenth festival but I felt like maybe that wasn't the place for me to try and sell stuff, more for black owned businesses. She said mmm, yeah, maybe not that one. I agreed. And attended the festivities in town. Sorry for not reporting on it.

A white person posting about Juneteenth would feel performative to me. Want to support your black friends, coworkers, and neighbors? Shop in their businesses, support them in other ways all year. Do I get bent out of shape when peas don’t post about Jewish holidays? No, because they are not their holidays.

I think last year was the first official federal holiday for it. It really doesn't even register in my area, which you can image is pretty much white, conservative, and rural. Bank is closed, and there is no mail. But that's it. My husband summed it up last year with "What is that?" - and I explained what the holiday represented. His reply was "Oh, OK".
We don't take it off. It's just like any other day in the summer - we will be working.
I was raised to 'celebrate' Memorial Day by attending memorial services for veterans and also going to the cemetery to put flags on the graves, then take them off later that evening, with my Dad who was a veteran.
Now living on the farm, end of May is still really busy, so the likelihood of taking anytime off is slim. We do try to get into the memorial service at the cemetery, but then it's back to work.

Although Juneteenth is a federal holiday, it's not a state holiday in many places. In NH, it's only an observance, state offices were open.

I don't think you get to tell other people what they get to advocate for ...
Also, I'm Canadian, so Juneteenth is not even really more than a blip on my social justice radar ... I do, however observe National Truth and Reconciliation Day ... by reading/watching/listening to FNMI (First Nations, Metis, Inuit) elders, authors, artists, and survivors ... not by blabbing all over social media what I, a white settler, am doing to 'mark the occasion' ... because that would be performative at best and racist/assholian at worst ...

I live in the birthplace of Juneteenth celebrations, and it’s only been two years or so that it’s been acknowledged by governments or companies as a holiday they have off. Our school district was closed yesterday in observance of the holiday. I’m glad it’s becoming more widely and formally recognized even if right-wing Twitter was out in its full white-hooded glory about it yesterday.
I don’t believe I’ve ever created a thread here in observation of any holiday.
