Ugh, I just found out why my Photostream hasn't been updating since June 26. Apple is getting rid of it and pushing everyone towards their iCloud Photos which will force many people to pay for extra storage. I've been relying on Photostream to transfer photos from my phone to my computer, which I then back up to an EHD and add to Lightroom. I think I'm going to start airdropping photos to my laptop once a week. That might end up being just as convenient since Photostream didn't always work anyway and there was no way to force it to sync. www.cbsnews.com/news/apple-my-photo-stream-icloud-how-to-save-your-photos/I missed the email about this. Does anyone else use Photostream or are you all on iCloud or using other methods?

I just use iCloud and pay for an extra 200GB - it's like $2-3/month. It's one of the few subscriptions I have a month, but I don't mind paying because I know I will always have my photos.

We are a Samsung family but I do not rely on the cloud.
I make albums then share them to Google Drive. From there I download zip folders and save on both hard drive on PC and external hard drive.
Once saved, I delete from my phone.

I airdrop photos from my phone to my Mac. I save photos to Google Drive, Shutterfly (mainly to make my father in law's calendar every year) and Amazon photos. I also have 2 external hard drives as well. I'm a bit overboard with my backups.

I hate that they are canceling that. I pay a bunch using iCloud and it annoys me but I feel pretty stuck. I do back up as well via google photos. My husband takes 3 times the photos I take so we have a ton.

Another iCloud user here, it’s so cheap and I don’t have to do a thing and all of my photos are automatically backed up from my phone and my iPad.

I didn't know about photo stream.
I use Image Capture to get the photos from my phone to my external. After I rename them, I'll add to the correct monthly/year folder. Then I'll copy/paste to my other externals. If I do it monthly, it's not a problem. It's when I get lazy and have a few months piled up, that it's overwhelming.

iCloud all the way. I absolutely love the new shared library feature as well- when my husband and I go out it's great knowing I don't have to worry about asking him to share pics, we are just both now in the habit of moving photos from when we do things together (or if he knows I will want photos from whatever he's done) to the shared library. I tend to organize photos on my laptop but make collages and print from my phone, so it's important to me to not have too many manual steps in there to ensure I have access to all photos as I do not plan what projects I want to work on in advance and I am one of those perpetually 'behind' scrappers.

I had resisted iCloud both because of the expense (I'm already paying extra for google photos as a secondary backup and I resent all forever ongoing/escalating subscriptions) and because I think they did the mirroring thing where if you deleted the photo in one place it would delete it in all the other places too. I'll have to do more research and see how that will work with the way I use photos and if it's worth paying more for more iCloud storage.

I use icloud and I would recommend it. I have the 2 TB subscription which is $9.99/month, which kind of sucks, but I don't use google photos so this is my only service. I also use all apple devices (ipad, iphone, imac) and I love that I have access to everything everywhere... not just my photostream (basically it still works exactly like it did before) but I also sort all of my photos into folders on my computer from the photos app, then delete them from the photos app except for a few favorites. Those folders are still accessible on all devices, but they're organized how I want them to be (and if i'm lazy and leave them in the photos app, they're still accessible everywhere). I also have any files accessible on all devices through the same system, plus backups of my computer, phone, daughter's phone, etc. I like that it works as a backup of all of my photos/files/devices so I never risk losing anything, an organization system, and automatic access to everything. There's also peace of mind that it backs stuff up automatically, so if I'm on vacation any photos I take on my phone will already be backed up and stored in icloud in case something happens to my phone.
I don't think it's perfect, but I haven't found a system that is better and I prefer it to google photo or any of the other options out there (but I am def an apple person! I think it might not work as well if all your devices are not apple).

i actually never knew about apple's photo stream until i started getting the notices that they were shutting it down. i've always backed up to the cloud and don't mind paying a bit for the extra storage.

I use OneDrive to automatically back up my photos on my iPhone. I like that it organizes everything in folders by month and year. I clean everything up a few times a year, deleting screenshots and pictures I don’t need. I also back up to an external hard drive. I took Miss Freddy’s Backup Bootcamp a few years ago, so I was able to organize 19 years worth of digital photos from all of my devices and files. Now I don’t need to think about it as much. I still pay the extra 99 cents for storage in iCloud, but I have been deleting photos from it now that I have everything archived in two different places.
I pay for OneDrive anyway because I need Word , PowerPoint and Excel on my computers, so this is the solution that has worked out best for me.

I do the airdrop between my phone and the computer, the only potential issue is if OS software is updated on one and not the other **sometimes** airdrop won't work until you update that other device. I'll also go old school and use my charging cord to "plug" my phone into the computer, bring up iPhoto, select the photos I want and transfer them over.

I used to use photo stream but switched to iCloud a few years back and find it petty good and convenient. I also back up my camera roll to Dropbox just for added security.

The software update thing also made Photostream glitch. Last month when it wouldn't sync it was an iOS update issue so I was really confused when I checked that first this month and everything was up to date but nothing would transfer. I sometimes forget I can still just plug the phone in. I used to do that for music, I think. I use airdrop for photos I take in square format for creating listings on Marketplace. When they came to my computer automagically on Photostream they wouldn't be cropped or filtered the way I had taken them, very annoying.
