Today (7/12) Epson has the PM-400 on sale for $199.99 and the refurb on sale for 139.99.
I got a refurb directly from them last fall for $169.99. The first one they sent would not load paper. They quickly sent out a second unit that has worked perfectly and sent me labels to return the first one. I am very pleased with it. It looks brand new.

Question for those who use the PM-400: do you use Epson papers? Glossy or matte? I prefer matte photos but don't see this option. If you use glossy - do you prefer the gloss or just put up with it?

Are these papers long lasting? Do you like the quality of the photos? My scrappy life would be so much easier if I could use a good color printer, but my history with printing at home photos is not great.

I purchased canon matte photo paper and hate it — it’s basically cardstock. I will try the Eason ultra paper.

I've had a Picturemate for years and always use the ultra glossy Epson photo paper to print at home. When I order from Persnickety Prints, I get matte and have always been happy with the quality and color. I recently had to reprint a photo that was ordered from Persnickety due to a stamping mishap. The colors of the ultra glossy Epson paper are very vibrant and lively compared to the Persnickety matte. It was the first time I had a side-by-side comparison of the same photo. I think you'd be happy with the ultra glossy especially if you use page protectors or pockets.

I LOVE the quality of paper that I get -- Epson Glossy Premium and/or Epson Glossy Ultra Premium. I have never used the lower ends of paper from them. I get mine when Epson puts it 1/2 off on their website.

Epson works best with Epson branded paper or Ilford paper. I use Ilford paper and love it, although it can be very expensive.
