I have posted many times about the struggles we have had with our 15 year old daughter. She has been in counseling and seeing a psychiatrist for years. She was recently admitted to the hospital and they want her to do an Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP). There is only one place within an hours drive and they have a 2 month waiting list. I need something now. My insurance company gave me a list of 18 places within a 6 hour drive. I have spent all day on the phone and none of these places have good reviews. Most are also on a waiting list. Mental Health Services are lacking in this country and it is frustrating. She doesn't qualify for inpatient treatment (unless we want to pay out-of-pocket for a private treatment center). We will absolutely do that if we need to but I agree that IOP is what is best for her now.
How do I find a place? How do you know if it's reputable? Our insurance told me that every one of these have to pass a Jayco(?) Rating/Certification but some of them look sketchy and a few are just a room set up in shopping strip. My daughter needs help (clinical depression) and I don't know what to do. I am hoping to find a place between New Orleans and Tallahassee, FL but can go further south in Florida if I need to.

Have you looked into online options? My oldest did IOP in 2021 and it was online due to Covid.

Can you ask your insurance company if they work with any virtual or online counselors or therapists? Not ideal, but might fill the gap while you’re on the waitlist.
Is your daughter enrolled in a school district? Have you thought about calling the school counselor to ask if they have any recommendations?

As one mum to another, can I just send you a big hug? It's so very hard and there is no handbook.
I have no knowledge about the American health services but is there a mental health charity with an online presence that might have some pointers?

I'm so sorry. I'm dealing with this too. Psychology Today lists mental health professionals by state. If you haven't already been through this list, maybe you'll find someone you haven't considered.

I am so sorry that you are dealing with this.
I haven’t written much about our struggles here because of my personal stalker here that I don’t trust. However, I want to share that I understand the challenges, desperation, and heartbreak that trying to find a psychiatric bed for your minor child is.
In the end, after several police visits, and spending nights at our county mental crisis counseling facility that does NOTHING helpful, we ended up on NEW YEARS DAY checking our son into a local emergency room. That put us on waiting lists for an inpatient bed in the state - they were all full and if we left the ER, they would drop us off of the list. This was our second ER visit, so we knew this to be true and we decided we would gut it out. They put us in a room that didn’t have temperature control, so it was in the 50’s in the room. My fingers would go numb. We were there for 72 hours - 3 days - before they finally got us a bed in the state mental hospital (where we didn’t want him, but we were willing to take anything until another bed opened up). We had him in the state hospital- which was 2-3 hours away, depending on traffic- until an inpatient bed opened for him 3 hours away. He was 17 at the time.
Intensive Outpatient Therapy is going to be a challenge unless you find a facility that is close to you, or are able to move close to where you find a treatment facility. Get on the local facility’s waitlist now. Is she stable enough to be living at home without IOP for now? Are there possibilities for treatment - less intensive than desirable- that can help her until you find an IOP facility with an opening?
Mental health treatment for minors is a huge black hole. Those who control funding aren’t interested in making mental health - especially for minors - a priority. I am so sorry.

I’m so sorry. Mental health care is sorely lacking for teens. I’ll second the website srapbookwriter provided - they list both online and in-person options. We use an online option for my daughter — it’s different bc she doesn’t have depression, but was referred for help coping with on-going medical issues. It was the best of available options for us as otherwise we were going to be driving 2 hours each way for in person appointments.

I have no suggestions for you.. I am sorry you are going through this. I have struggled (lightly, not so extreme as your child) but even on my level it seems so hard to find help. My prayers are with you and I hope you can find the help you need. xoxo

merry27 can you ask your insurance for a list of out of network facilities that are close by? Or search yourself and then request an out if network referral? It will be a special contract between insurance and facility. You can ask for an advocate with insurance to help you fight and if you have the program, reach out to state dept of managed health care and request they do an expedited review of coverage. You have to be detailed in what you are asking for and why. Many facilities do allow out if network and some even have covered cost programs. So make sure you look outside if network. The program dd was in had cost coverage and programs that helped get insurance approval. Some companies also have a 30 mile radius policy. Check to see if yours does. It helped get dd an OON Co tract for her infusions. If you have any questions a out these processes let me know.
