Do you have a no soliciting sign? Is it effective?

Our community also has a no soliciting policy, we still get them. Most though don’t ring the bell or knock on the door. They just leave their card or flyer on the porch. These are mostly gardening and maid service people. The ones that do come to door are bigger companies for things like solar. We never answer the door if we don’t know the people.

We have one on our front door and honestly it probably works 50% of the time. If I'm sitting in the living room and someone comes to the door I won't get up to answer it even if they do see me sitting there. After a minute or two they get the idea and leave.

It’s a quiet bougie suburb. The police are definitely not overworked. And this is a special initiative program of the mayor (that she campaigned on), so I think they’ve been told to respond quickly.

I don't answer the door. When I renovated, I put a bay window in the living room and the small side windows open, so I just open the window and say "Hi" and 99.999% of the time I end up saying "no thank you" and close the window and walk away. I love my bay window

I have had salesman mention my no solicting sign as they try to solicit me...

I have three on my screen door and once you open the screen there's one next to my door knocker... the problem is you can't see them until you are already on my porch. I don't have a way to have them going up the driveway because there's a hedge, unless I stick them to my car...

The last time someone knocked on my door he just kept going on and on even though I said we didn't have ants, weren't interested, no thank you, he just kept talking. I finally had to close the door in his face... Usually I don't open the door, but I thought it was UPS.

We were just talking about the lack of solicitations with a neighbor a couple of weeks ago. No one has come to either of our doors in years.

The conversation was prompted by an elderly woman we know who had someone come to her home to try to sell her meat. She told them she wasn't interested and called the sheriff. The sherriff's office told her that what they were trying to do was illegal. I don't know the details but it sounded shady and I'm glad she got rid of them. They didn't know who they were messing with!

I check my ring camera to determine if I am getting up from my seat. I refuse to buy anything from dtd salespeople. My German seems to keep the religious recruiters away.

This is me too.  I don’t even want to get up to see who is at the door so I look at the camera footage.  I just push the button on my security app to turn on the front door microphone and tell them I am not interested. I don’t mind my dog barking because he is louder than the doorbell and the only way that I know someone is there most of the time.  Technology is awesome!

When we lived in a Texas suburb, the police would respond quickly to calls about persons soliciting w/out a license.  We now live in a gated community and don't really have a problem w/ solicitors.

I'm in a dead end so not many solicitors but the few we get here and there love to pretend they don't see my green 'no soliciting' sign on my door that I got from the town. I usually go to my glass front door if they catch me sitting right here, point to my sign and shut the door. They always stumble over their words like "oh we didn't see it". Sure you didn't buddy. Bye now.

Thank you, I appreciate your suggestion.  You’re correct and I will start saying “we” from now on.  There have been times that I was leaving the house and would see someone walking by that looked a little scary to me.  I would lean into my front door and say loudly “Bye Hon.  I’ll be back soon and I’ll pick up those razor blades for you”  Just to make them think someone was still in the house.  

My neighbor used to always order two meals when getting take out dinner so that they didn’t realize she was alone.  She would just heat it up the next night.  I thought that was smart too, but even better when ordering it delivered.  During the pandemic, I used to yell up my stairs that dinner had arrived when I was ordering meals from restaurants.  I would get three or four dinners at a time.  It’s silly, the things we do as a safety measure.  Another neighbor bought some huge work boots at the thrift store and some dog bowls and would leave them by her back door so anyone casing the place thought she had a big dog and a man in the house.  I thought that was really clever.

It might help wit some of the soliciting. We have a little sign next to our door bell and rarely get door to door sales. Our development also has signs posted at the entrances. I had one persistent guy a few months ago trying to sell me new windows. I told him no thanks and started to close the door. He asked why and I said because my windows are new and because I don't buy door to door. He asked why again and I said because it disturbs my peace and that's why I have a sign. I said have a good day and closed the door. It's super annoying. If someone says no soliciting, then listen to them!

We have a sign, but doesn't mean people won't ring the bell. Often they will tell us they aren't selling anything but want to give a flyer or speech. Sometimes I don't even answer the door, though I am sure they hear the dog barking and our TV on!
