There is a small one at the entrance of our subdivision. And until the last few months we didn't get very many at all. But lately we are getting a ton of them, mostly for companies that seem to be "greener" pest control or something. I'm not friendly when someone I do not know and is appearing to sell something knocks on my door and almost immediately tell them not interested and shut the door. Also one of my dogs is an asshole (a cute one) and barks like crazy while I pick her up to keep her tiny shih tzu self from going outside to bark at them more.
It's very annoying when I'm working from home like today. I'm wondering if signs help or if people just ignore them.

We've never had a sign but I wouldn't need one anyway because I never answer the door.

You can't see my house from the street because it is down a flight of stairs, so I don't generally get solicitors, but I do get people ringing the buzzer on my locked gate because they want to cut through my yard (most of the stairs in my neighborhood lead to the street or through a green belt, but mine just go to my house), and I'm considering a sign.
When my kids forget to close the gate, I literally get people backpacking through my yard!

Our community also has a no soliciting policy, we still get them. Most though don’t ring the bell or knock on the door. They just leave their card or flyer on the porch. These are mostly gardening and maid service people. The ones that do come to door are bigger companies for things like solar. We never answer the door if we don’t know the people.

I don’t get many solicitors because my house is up in a hill sort of and you have to climb a steep flight of stairs to come to my front door. Anyone who is invited comes to my patio.
There is a law in my city that all solicitors have to be registered with the city and wear a specific badge showing they are registered. Residents are encouraged to call the police on anyone knocking on doors without the badge and the police respond quickly. That really cuts down on the soliciting.

We have one on our front door and honestly it probably works 50% of the time. If I'm sitting in the living room and someone comes to the door I won't get up to answer it even if they do see me sitting there. After a minute or two they get the idea and leave.

And this is a special initiative program of the mayor (that she campaigned on), so I think they’ve been told to respond quickly.

We have one and I think it works at least 2/3 of the time. When my youngest was taking naps I had an additional sign that I put out that said "baby sleeping, do NOT ring bell" and that was always respected.

I don't answer the door. When I renovated, I put a bay window in the living room and the small side windows open, so I just open the window and say "Hi" and 99.999% of the time I end up saying "no thank you" and close the window and walk away. I love my bay window

I have one on the storm door. I want to say that it's been pretty good about keeping people from ringing our bell, there is only one exception that comes to mind in the few years we've had it.

I have had salesman mention my no solicting sign as they try to solicit me...
I have three on my screen door and once you open the screen there's one next to my door knocker... the problem is you can't see them until you are already on my porch. I don't have a way to have them going up the driveway because there's a hedge, unless I stick them to my car...
The last time someone knocked on my door he just kept going on and on even though I said we didn't have ants, weren't interested, no thank you, he just kept talking. I finally had to close the door in his face... Usually I don't open the door, but I thought it was UPS.

We don't get many solicitors. Our house is set back from the street with woods in front of us. We don't have a sign but we don't answer the door either if it's someone we don't know. Solicitors here are required to obtain a permit from the city and we can call the police if they don't have one. I wouldn't waste my time doing that and since I never answer the door I don't know if they have a permit anyway. The police would respond quickly if called though. We're a very small lakeside community but we are an incorporated city with our own city government and police force that is very responsive.

We were just talking about the lack of solicitations with a neighbor a couple of weeks ago. No one has come to either of our doors in years.
The conversation was prompted by an elderly woman we know who had someone come to her home to try to sell her meat. She told them she wasn't interested and called the sheriff. The sherriff's office told her that what they were trying to do was illegal. I don't know the details but it sounded shady and I'm glad she got rid of them. They didn't know who they were messing with!

There is no soliciting in our development. Security is alerted if someone breaks the rule. We've had maybe 2 or 3 since we moved here in 2017. Girl Scouts are allowed. In our former city, we would get solicitors ALL THE TIME. It was a pain. But we never put up a sign.

I check my ring camera to determine if I am getting up from my seat. I refuse to buy anything from dtd salespeople. My German seems to keep the religious recruiters away.

I love the English language! A solicitor in the UK is usually a lawyer. If you are soliciting you might be touting for business as a prostitute. If you solicit someone’s thoughts you are asking them for their opinion. I’ve seen signs like this a couple of times, they said “no hawkers, no pedlars, no salesmen”. I was told they didn’t stop anyone from knocking at the door.

I just push the button on my security app to turn on the front door microphone and tell them I am not interested. I don’t mind my dog barking because he is louder than the doorbell and the only way that I know someone is there most of the time. Technology is awesome!

There was no convenient place for it to be seen from that side of his house because the bushes grew on either side of the side door. He just mounted the sign to a couple of posts and shoved it into the hedge, then wires it in place so that the wind doesn’t mess with it. It is easy to remove to trim the hedge.

When we lived in a Texas suburb, the police would respond quickly to calls about persons soliciting w/out a license. We now live in a gated community and don't really have a problem w/ solicitors.

Gives the illusion of not being alone. eta - I am so sorry if this came across as rude. I totally thought this thread was started by Lexica. And, I was seriously trying to help Lexica.

I'm in a dead end so not many solicitors but the few we get here and there love to pretend they don't see my green 'no soliciting' sign on my door that I got from the town. I usually go to my glass front door if they catch me sitting right here, point to my sign and shut the door. They always stumble over their words like "oh we didn't see it". Sure you didn't buddy. Bye now.

I’m surprised only one person commented that they have a Ring doorbell. We already had security cameras before but now we put up a Ring doorbell too. It goes off on my phone when it senses motion coming up to the door, and makes another alert when someone actually rings the bell. I can respond through the doorbell. I think this is preferable to not answering at all because sometimes burglars will ring the bell or knock to see if someone is home and if not, they target the house to break in. Plus I can respond even if I’m not home so it seems as if someone’s there.

Thank you, I appreciate your suggestion. You’re correct and I will start saying “we” from now on. There have been times that I was leaving the house and would see someone walking by that looked a little scary to me. I would lean into my front door and say loudly “Bye Hon. I’ll be back soon and I’ll pick up those razor blades for you” Just to make them think someone was still in the house. My neighbor used to always order two meals when getting take out dinner so that they didn’t realize she was alone. She would just heat it up the next night. I thought that was smart too, but even better when ordering it delivered. During the pandemic, I used to yell up my stairs that dinner had arrived when I was ordering meals from restaurants. I would get three or four dinners at a time. It’s silly, the things we do as a safety measure. Another neighbor bought some huge work boots at the thrift store and some dog bowls and would leave them by her back door so anyone casing the place thought she had a big dog and a man in the house. I thought that was really clever.

It might help wit some of the soliciting. We have a little sign next to our door bell and rarely get door to door sales. Our development also has signs posted at the entrances. I had one persistent guy a few months ago trying to sell me new windows. I told him no thanks and started to close the door. He asked why and I said because my windows are new and because I don't buy door to door. He asked why again and I said because it disturbs my peace and that's why I have a sign. I said have a good day and closed the door. It's super annoying. If someone says no soliciting, then listen to them!

When we first moved into this house, (about 10 years ago), I made a sign for my front door saying, “Unless you are selling Thin Mints, No soliciting. It worked pretty well most the time. Now, since Girl Scouts no longer go door to door to sell their cookies, I think it goes right over people’s head. I will have to find a more timely sign to make.
Mostly I just never answer the door. The dog makes so much racket, people give up and go away.

We have a sign, but doesn't mean people won't ring the bell. Often they will tell us they aren't selling anything but want to give a flyer or speech. Sometimes I don't even answer the door, though I am sure they hear the dog barking and our TV on!

I do have a sign and it works. It says, "No solicitors unless you are selling thin mints".
