Hi, do you own any? If yes, how often do you use them? I have several models that are quite old (the original), #900, #510, and
a few others. These days, I rarely use them because of the "spider web" adhesive all over the place and needing to use a bone
folder or stylist (ball tip) to push down the adhesive so it wouldn't "crawl" up the sides of my die cuts, etc.
Saw 2 sensational Xyron Hack You Tube videos by: Creations by Miss.
1. Tip #1, No Mess Hack! Best Tip Ever Adhering Intricate Die Cuts, etc. (she used her large Gemini die cutter). Video is approx. 2 years old.
2. Tip #2, same message, but using manual die cutters (she used Sizzix Big Kick, Sizzix Sidekick, Diamond Press, & Gemini Midi. Video is approx. 1 yr. old.
She Xyroned her intricate die cut ie, words in her Creative Station machine (Xyron). She placed her Xyroned sentiment in her
manual die cutting sandwich which including laying a silicone mat on TOP of it...amongst other pieces. She cranked the sandwich
through her manual die cutting machine. End results: The pressure from the die cutter & silicone mat forced the adhesive away
from the sides & "openings/holes" of each alphabet letter. Fab results: adhesive remained only on the BACK of the die cut.
Yesterday, I did a test run. I die cut twice an intricate Lattice rectangle which had alot of "open" space and thin lines.
Was about to use my Xyron 900 machine til I checked the cartridge and saw the top plastic "film" separated from the sticky wax
backing. Yikes! So, I didn't know what to do. Hunted down my last acid free permanent 900 Xyron cartridge as a replacement.
Little did I know, I could have used my acid free Repositionable cartridge as it's more adjustable when adhered to a surface and
down the road the adhesive would become permanent...(internet research after the fact).
Could I have saved the separated Xyron 900 refill? Yes. According to a great YT video by Beth Kingston/Xyron: Rethreading Separated Refills for the Xyron Creative Station - YT video is 9 years old. It looks like it's an easy fix which I'll try out later.
Built a layering sandwich in my Cuttlebug as follows: (from bottom to top) - A Plate, C Plate, Xyroned die cut, Silicone Mat (no source info), B plate (if you've cut down a DT cutting mat that could have been substituted for the B plate you'd need to include a ie, cereal box shim for thickness). Repeated the process for both die cut gold foil lattice 65 lb. cardstock. Results: GREAT! Tore off the plastic film. Noticed a small corner on ONE die cut had a tad bit of adhesive on top. Used the DT/Crafter's Square crepe looking adhesive remover. Worked fine 'cept there was a slight dulling of the shiny gold foil surface. Paper was purchased from M's. It has a Khaki
backing (SKU #191518559569).
There was no excessive adhesive in any of the "openings" or along the sides of the die cuts. Hooray!
Today I Xyroned 2 different lattice die cuts...65 lb. Black cardstock from M's. Again, I used the Cuttlebug and the same sandwich layers. This time I used
the DT Crafter's Square Glue Gun Pad (Silicone)...$1.25 available in Lt. Blue or Hot Pink (rolled in pkg). It's approx. 7 1/2" x 10 1/2".
I already pre cut it in 1/2 last time when I experimented with reverse stamping. Since it had rounded corners, I need a
straight edge or 90 degree corner to place into a Stamp positioner corner (ie, Misti & others). DT Glue Gun Pad SKU #: 195464063736
This DT Silicone glue gun pad worked great for reverse stamping and in the Cuttlebug Xyron Hack sandwich (thanks again to
Creative Miss YT videos).
It should be noted my Xyron refills are quite old perhaps more than 10 years old and they're still sticky.
I've cut down several DT cutting mats (not self healing) a short time ago and they're working great...have not warped in the Gemini Jr. nor Cuttlebug. They were purchased 3 or 4 years ago. There's an excellent YT video about self healing mats by: Karen Brown - Just Get It Done Quilts) called Self Healing Cutting Mats - All You Need to Know
This is a game changer for adhering die cuts using my Xyron. It's better than having to apply liquid glue to each part of an intricate die. I have enough unused cartridges to play with.
Would you try out the Xyron hack and let us know of your results? Thanks.
