I saw Sean released a statement. This is from People magazine: people.com/blind-side-sean-tuohy-speaks-out-about-michael-oher-legal-petition-7643431This is interesting to me, must be what he is offering as an explanation: "Tuohy insisted the conservatorship that prompted the filing of Monday’s petition was unrelated to the movie. Rather, it was a way to appease the NCAA, the nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics, when it appeared Oher was likely to play football at the University of Mississippi. Tuohy was an All-American point guard at the Southern university known as "Ole Miss" and an active supporter of the school. As such, he would qualify as a “booster” under NCAA rules." “Michael was obviously living with us for a long time, and the NCAA didn’t like that,” Tuohy told the Daily Memphian. “They said the only way Michael could go to Ole Miss was if he was actually part of the family. I sat Michael down and told him, ‘If you’re planning to go to Ole Miss — or even considering Ole Miss — we think you have to be part of the family. This would do that, legally.’ We contacted lawyers who had told us that we couldn’t adopt over the age of 18; the only thing we could do was to have a conservatorship. We were so concerned it was on the up-and-up that we made sure the biological mother came to court.” And also: Oher's attorney J. Gerard Stranch IV told ESPN that the Super Bowl champion recently learned that he was the only member of the family not receiving royalty checks, and hired Stranch to begin looking into the situation. That led the attorney to uncover the conservatorship papers earlier this year that showed Oher was allegedly never officially adopted by the Tuohy family. This isn’t even legally accurate though. You can adopt someone over the age of 18 in every state. It only requires the consent of the person being adopted. It happens with some frequency.a conservator ship is different and is usually used when someone isn’t competent to handle their own affairs and needs. Clearly not the case for a guy who ended up playing sec college football and in the nfl. From what I've read, it wasnt that they legally could not adopt him....but rather, if they did, it would make a big problem for the NCAA and he would not be eligible for football or scholarships.

I heard this on the news last night. Here is what I don't understand. If he has been in a conservatorship all these years, wouldn't the Touhy's have had to make all his legal decisions for him and sign all contracts? How could he possibly not have known? Why wouldn't his agent have known? If he had conservators, could he have bought a car, gotten housing or done anything without them being involved? Wouldn't the Touhy's had to be involved in all contract negotiations during his career? I just can not see how someone could be in a conservatorship for nearly 20 years of their adult life and not realize it. If he didn’t know he wouldn’t have disclosed it to anyone. The Touhy’s clearly had financial incentives to do whatever they have done. If they didn’t raise an issue- no one else involved would have known or had any reason to know. It wouldn’t be that hard if no one ever questioned any of the transactions and why would they? But he did know --- atleast since his first book came out in 2011. He talked about the conservatorship in the book. sports.yahoo.com/michael-oher-the-blind-side-money-adoption-conservatorship-140719821.htmlAccording to this, the conservatorship ended when he was 25 or when the court ended it. So maybe thats how he was able to sign NFL Contracts? www.npr.org/2023/08/15/1193809048/the-blind-side-michael-oher-adoption

But he just filed a petition to have conservatorship ended. He is 37, so if he ended when he was 25, he wouldn’t have needed to file a petition, would he? I don’t know what to think of the whole mess right now.

I don’t know what to think of the whole mess right now. You are right...but IMHO the reason he is really filing the documents is because he hasn't been rightfully paid whatever money is due him.

I’m not going to even make a stab at ncaa rules/violations bc that’s not an area I’m remotely qualified to address. But legally, and given the control a conservator ship would give them over him that doesn’t make any sense to me. I willl say the whole thing stinks of manipulation of what was a young man without nearly the level of sophistication and education the Touhy’s would have had.

I tried to find the reddit thread that I was reading but was unsuccessful. It was a bunch of wait persons/servers who worked in the Touhy's town (Memphis???) and they all hate the Touhys, especially Leigh Anne and the son. They said she is the most entitled, bitchy person they have dealt with. She treats the servers like personal servants and the son is a spoiled dick. They were brutal with their opinions.
I found it through a link in a news story but when I went back to find it again, I couldn't. It is on reddit somewhere because I read the thread.

From an article on ESPN, from the Tuohy's attorney - In his statement, Singer said agents for Michael Lewis, author of the bestselling book that became "The Blind Side," negotiated a deal in which the Tuohy family "received a small advance from the production company and a tiny percentage of net profits." "They insisted that any money received be divided equally. And they have made good on that pledge," the statement said. "The evidence -- documented in profit participation checks and studio accounting statements -- is clear: over the years, the Tuohys have given Mr. Oher an equal cut of every penny received from 'The Blind Side.' Even recently, when Mr. Oher started to threaten them about what he would do unless they paid him an eight-figure windfall, and, as part of that shakedown effort refused to cash the small profit checks from the Tuohys, they still deposited Mr. Oher's equal share into a trust account they set up for his son." ESPN ArticleI'm going to wait until more details come out.

Every transracially adopted person I know KNEW this was coming. The Touhy's are attention seekers and see themselves as "saviors".

As a POC, I'm not one bit surprised by this information.

What’s really sad is the nameless faces behind keyboards going after Sandra Bullock and saying her Oscar should be revoked. She has nothing to do with this and was playing a role that won her an Oscar. She is not a Touhy. The woman is grieving the loss of her partner - people need to lay off.
