My niece was adopted from China. She's 23 and is visiting Cali for the first time now, along with her boyfriend. Tomorrow and Tuesday they'll be in SF and def. want to visit Chinatown. We ate at a horrible Chinese rest. there somewhere - twice! It was about 15 years apart. Food was beyond terrible. Service was even worse. I remember there was a long flight of red carpeted stairs to get to the seating area. Large place. Pretty empty but we were there at an odd time of day.
Which restaurants there can you recommend?

go on sfgate.com and search the reviews there.. there are many great chinese places there. the best dumpling places are out on taraval street about 26th.. Kingdom of Dumpling is outstanding.. you can take the L muni car from downtown to the place or drive there. the parking is a little difficult.. just have to circle the block.

I strongly second all of this!

Thank you both! They won't have a car. Is this in Chinatown and easily accessible by public transport?

I saw on TT to look for 3 star reviews on yelp, that is how you find the best chinese restaurants. Not sure how accurate that is, but many people agreed with it! She may want to use Yelp if they don't have a car and need to stay local to where they are. Ive never been to SF, good luck!

I would look for places that are at least 4-4.5 rated. kingdom on dumpling is on the muni train out to the west side of san francisco.. chinatown is easily accessible by public transport.. the muni train has a branch that goes there from downtown. also consider that there are many styles of chinese food.. cantonese is the style most known in the us.. but it is not the only one. and what i see on menus in chinese places outside of chinatowns in us is very different from what you see in authentic chinese places.

Might not be exactly what you were looking for but I love Harborview - it is slightly more upscale and has fabulous views of the water and bay from the patio. I love the food too: www.harborviewsf.com/ (it has 4 stars on yelp - could pair it with a more hole in the wall place in Chinatown)

For dim sum, I'd go to the following places: Lai Hong Lounge 1416 Powell St. It's very crowded on weekends so weekdays may not be too bad. Dol Ho 808 Pacific Ave. This one is a family run place, small and may have to share tables. For lunch or dinner, I'd go to Capital Restaurant 839 Clay St. Get their fried chicken wings, they are famous for it. Love their steamed pork hash and I'd order the one with the salted fish (that was one of my faves and it was their Friday specials) but you can order the dishes and order rice separately. Utopia at 139 Waverly is pretty good, too. New Lun Ting on 670 Jackson has been around since I was a little girl (over 70 years). They have mostly rice plates and the curry dishes are popular. There is a Vietnamese restaurant across the street that was one of my go to places to eat called Golden Flower. Their pho is quite filling.
That's all I can think of, these are restaurants where I've gone to and liked when I worked in Chinatown. All of the places can be found on Yelp and while may not be the "best", locals do frequent these places.

Brandy Ho's has been around since the early 80's, it is Hunan based food. I haven't been there in a few years since we moved, but it was always a favorite of ours. Be sure to tell them to check the menu - they will have pictures of peppers to be able to show you how hot the food is - or if you want it hotter you can tell them. (Not everything is hot) We've been there when celebrities were there, but again, its been a few years. But an old standard with great food. www.brandyhos.com(Completely agree with the dumpling and Dim Sum recommendations - yum!)
