We are attending a wedding for one of DH’s employees in October in Colombia. The dress code on the invitation says formal and specifies long, solid color dresses for women. I haven’t worn a formal dress since my own wedding 27 years ago. I found a dress on ThredUp but I’m not sure if it looks too much like a bridesmaid or MOB dress. It is nowhere close to the bridesmaid dress color in this wedding - I’m just concerned that the style is wrong. Is this kind of dress OK for a guest? Or should I look for something less - tulle, I guess. 😂 I was thinking to wear metallic champagne strappy heels and a champagne wrap for evening. ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230902/3552be0db1cb236e12b1a7973f2754bd.jpg) Thanks for your advice!

I like it and think based on accessories and hair it will look less bridal.

I think that would be fine, especially with the shoes you mentioned and some jewelry.

Colombia? That says COLORFUL to me. Green or red or bright blue. I'm not sure why it has to be solid colored, must be a Bridezilla thing because I can't imagine micromanaging my guests like that. It's not like you're going to be in the formal wedding pictures.
I have a yellow sundress with red flowers that I would want to wear to that, but barring that, I'd go with something bright in a color that flatters you and the husband can wear a coordinating tie.

Thanks - she is a bit “extra” as she will tell you. It is hard as I found it difficult to find a long dress I liked that wasn’t either a floral print or bridesmaid-y like this. Bright colors are not good with my complexion, though, and our experience in Colombia is that they dress very much like Americans or Europeans. It’s up in the mountains, not on the beach.

If you have a large natural bust, I’d make sure you have good support for this dress after looking at the back. I’d make sure you dance in your under garment/those sticky cups before I’d pack this. I’ve seen strapless dress wearers have to adjust their dress while dancing in order to prevent a wardrobe malfunction.
I see nothing wrong with wearing this dress to a wedding if you like it

I mean, I know they're generally rather sophisticated in Colombia, but it still feels more "colorful" then beige or muted rose from what I see on TV and in movies. Oh well, then I'm sure your choice will be elegant and look great. I tend to be more colorful in general so I'm probably not one who should be weighing in 😁

I see nothing wrong with wearing this dress to a wedding if you like it The back is not as low as you might think - I can easily wear a regular bra with it. (The white thing in the photo is a tag, not a cutout.) I do have a large bust so the ability to wear a real bra is a must in any dress I buy! It does let my tattoo peek out but they’ll just have to deal with that.

I did think it was a cut out. I’ve almost ordered too many dresses online before I realized it was cut out on the back. Enjoy the wedding and don’t worry about the tattoo. They seem to be everywhere these days to include the 90 year old lady at my church.

I think it’s really pretty and will look lovely with your complexion. I also think any solid colored, long, formal gown runs the risk of looking bridesmaid-y (unless you go pageant-y, which is worse, imo). So pick out a dress you love!

Thanks, I appreciate your input. And those dresses are pretty! But not available in plus size, which I need. My coloring is muted and deep jewel tones wash me out. The color of the first dress would probably be OK, but I just wouldn't be comfortable in so much glitter! I also fear, at the age of 50, looking like I'm trying too hard. My personal style is pretty conservative these days. (I also happen to know that the other company owners' wives are not flamboyant dressers. i wouldn't want to stick out.)

Oh, that looks much more elegant. Hm. I didn’t want to spend that much though.

Would you consider Rent the Runway? Especially if you won't need a floor length gown again. They have some lovely options.

I agree with Rent the Runway and also am not a fan of the color.

Guys, the color is nicer in person, I promise. It’s less gray and more purple-y, if that makes sense. It’s actually one of my most flattering colors to wear. My feelings are kind of hurt, but I did ask for opinions! 😂
I don’t know if I’ll wear this dress or choose something else. I don’t want to rent because I’m not a standard size - whatever I wear will need to be altered. I’ll think about it some more.
Some of you definitely have a distorted view of what Colombia is like. This isn’t a Caribbean beach resort. The vibe in Medellin is more like Denver. People in Colombia do not swan around in bright colors any more than we do here in the US. Encanto is a Disney movie - it’s not real! Hahaha.

I like the color of the dress. It is also a color I wear a lot. I just tossed out Rent the Runway for options that would be cost effective. I hate buying something I would only wear once. I didn't think about alterations.

I found this dress at a price I felt comfortable with, so I ordered it to see if I like it better before I decide. It has pockets! 😂 ![](https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230903/bd5099e6d782224ccb8f07b9efd591f7.jpg) The color is right on the edge of what I can wear without looking like a corpse, I hope.

If you know it’s flattering on you, I believe you! ❤️ It also would make me look like I was dying of consumption, so that probably colors my opinion ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/Q_m8lDOvc_3Le3r1GKdf.jpg)

How do y’all think it would look hemmed shorter, maybe mid-calf? I’m not sure with the slit. Anyway, if it could be you could get more use out of it after the wedding. eta: Love the emerald green one, and I think that bust would be more flattering for someone with a larger chest. Sometimes the Anthropologie style can look better on a very long, lean body with very little bust.

I think this is a lovely dress — and kudos to you for shopping ThredUP! I’m trying hard to help the environment by buying fewer new things and looking for recycled instead. I shop ThredUP and RealReal and encourage others to do the same.
You might consider a statement type necklace to add some pop to the overall look and maybe even some fun, colorful shoes.

The style of the mauve dress is really pretty, I like the details. If you like it and the color suits you, go for it. Dress it up with some statement jewelry. I’m still thinking hmmmmm over telling guests what they can wear color-wise, but I guess the Bride is running the show! And Thred Up is always a great option, especially for a one-time outfit. The green is pretty, but says Christmas Holidays to me. Whatever you pick, it sounds like an amazing experience!

Merge, I love you choice of dress! I would wear it and I think the color will be lovely! None of the other choices would be something I would necessarily choose but this dress would definitely hit my mark-there is simplicity but a sneaky complexity in that bottom line and some flirtiness but not childishness.
