The Great Carpezio linked this on the other thread Walk out shopping Would you like this or not? It seems like a great convenience. Avoiding lines, for one. How about any downsides?

They have this type of shopping at our Sam's Clubs. My son thinks it would be awesome.

I use scan and go at Sam’s snd love it.
We have an Amazon Fresh store snd it’s pretty cool but I have heard that people have been overcharged for items they picked up snd put back down or multiples of things they bought. No idea if it’s been fixed. They said it was a pain to correct. It’s a pretty cool store and if I was closer would shop there more often. It is never busy when I am there snd it’s really clean. Most food prices are comparable to regular prices at grocery stores and their sale prices can be really good. It’s hit or miss on the prices. They have regular check outs as well as the ones you just walk through. They have a nice salad bar and lots of food in a hot bar. They don’t put them out until later in the day and I have only been there early.

We use scan and go at Sam’s Club. It works - but…… The only “downside” (if you even want to call it that) is that every time we use it, they scan my phone, then the door person rescans every single item in our cart, If we use a normal checkout lane with a clerk or do the regular self checkout with a paper receipt, they check maybe 3 or 4 items, not the whole cart. Bottom line - it doesn’t save you any time. Either you stand in line to check out, or stand and wait for the door checker to rescan your entire cart. So it’s a nice idea, but pretty pointless.

It sounds like Sam's version could use some tweaking.

Oh wow, that doesn't sound fun. I wonder if it is in the infant stages and they are testing to see if it should go on without the intensive rechecking; or maybe there have been issues of some theft.

We’ve been using the scan and go at Sam’s Club for a few years now, and we freaking love it. It’s honestly why we switched from Costco to Sam’s.
They only scan 2 or 3 things in our order as we leave, and frankly, we buy a ton. We are usually walking out with 2 full carts.
The only *very slight* downside for me is that sometimes it caps the order. When we went a few weeks ago, it stopped us at $1000. We had to do a second order on my phone (the first was on my husband’s) so they just scanned both QR codes on the way out.
Honestly, it’s ruined all other shopping for me because I hate having to stand in line, unpack the cart to the conveyor belt, and then pack it again.

I recently started using the scan and go at Sam's and they only check a few of my items at the door. My issue is that there have been a few times where sale items are not discounted. I don't tend to notice until I'm at home and then I forget to go to customer service when I go back. I don't really find it a time savings because I have the self check down to a science and it takes me maybe 2 minutes. I think I'm going to stick with self check.

They only scan three items at the door here. I would be annoyed if they rescanned everything at the door as like you said that defeats the purpose to save time that snd the poor people behind you.

At our Sam’s they only check 3 items when I use scan and go. The only problem I’ve had when using it is when I’m worried my phone will die. The best part is not waiting in line. It seems like ours is always busy when I’m there.

I went to an Amazon Go store in Seattle. My kids and I really liked it.
I think it makes sense that is where we are headed. The issue would be access. You would have to have a smart phone and have to have a credit card attached to the App.

We don't have Sam's Club here (they tried and failed, Costco has too big a hold in the area), and we don't have the Amazon stores down this way. The Amazon one would have me worried about being charged for something I picked up and then put back down. And not everyone has a smart phone, and if they do, many do not put their credit card information on it. The Sam's Club version would be interesting to try. Can you delete something if you decide to not purchase it?

I have no experience or interest in this type of shopping. Check out SNL's Amazon Go skit ( HERE).
