We don't have the store here, but I just assumed it was pronounced as one word, "HEB". I was watching something, and the speaker said "H-E-B", three separate letters. Is that correct?

Spelled out as 3 letters. H-E-B. Named for Howard Edward Butt, who took over the store from his mother in 1919.

I was just on vacation with a friend who moved from Austin almost 3 years ago. Somehow we got on the topic of grocery stores and she explained the “specialness” of HEB to me. I’m now a bit jealous of you Texans!

It’s not a word. It’s the letters.

H-E-B
We’re getting our first in our specific area soon. They’ve just started moving this way.

When I'm in Texas I shop at H-E-B. Though I love Central Market, which I learned from **GypsyGirl** is owned by H-E-B. I think that H-E-B is superior to the grocery stores in my home state.

H-E-B (or lack thereof) is a serious consideration in our decision to move out of Texas. Nothing else compares!

I'm waiting for one to come to my little corner of DFW. There are some 20-25 minutes away but I have a hard time thinking of driving that far for groceries.
On the other hand, I do go to Central Market in Southlake when I'm running errands over there. That is an amazing store as well!

It looks like a huge warehouse type of store inside. Reminds me of WinCo. Are the products better? Service good? Do I need to add this to my "must see" list if I ever visit Texas? And yes, I do like to visit grocery stores in other states, just out of curiosity as to what different things they sell.

We occasionally go to Central Market, most specifically when it’s hatch chilly season! The closest H-E-B to us is Frisco, and that drive isn’t happening. People around here have been begging for one for years!

Are they (H-E-B) more expensive or the same as other grocery stores? I find HEB to be more affordable than the Kroger or Randall's that are near me. Pretty much all my grocery shopping, as well as all pharmacy needs, are done at HEB/Central Market. Their store brand products are very good, and they have the Central Market Organics products as well. Some of the larger cities now have HEB Wellness which offers affordable memberships for primary healthcare and physical therapy. They also have Wellness Nutrition Services, with registered dietitians to help with nutrition/diet plans and showing people how to shop for healthier choices. It's so much more than just a grocery store! H-E-B (or lack thereof) is a serious consideration in our decision to move out of Texas. Nothing else compares! Right? DD had withdrawals when she moved to Lubbock for college! Glad to hear they are expanding further north in the state.

As far as it looking like a huge warehouse store…that’s just what grocery stores in Texas look like, lol.

I don't think H-E-B and Winco are similar. I like both, and wish both were closer to me, but for different reasons.

It's usually a very large grocery store, with a lot of variety, high quality store brand items, fresh fruit and veggies, and a good bakery. Depending on the individual store, they might also sell clothing, furniture, and electronics. They are also well-lit and have a friendly staff. I admit that I prefer to shop elsewhere, with my ADD it usually takes me at least a couple hours to finish my shopping.

HEB is our only option in my town and was the only close option when we lived in SA as well. Besides being larger, it seems very similar to Whole Foods.

Lol! “Warehouse” looking stores here are WinCo, Costco, and Walmarts. Our chain grocery stores are smaller, but still big without that cavernous feeling. They are bigger than ALDIs, Whole Foods, and TJs but smaller than WinCo.

Because I am a number geek, I did a little research. Average store size: Trader Joe’s/ALDIs - 15,000sq ft Albertsons (a popular chain here) - 50,000 sq ft H-E-B - 70,000 sq ft WinCo - 90,000 sq ft CostCo - 150,000 sq ft Walmart - 180,000 sq ft

I haven’t been in most of those, or if I was it was 15 years ago, so I’ll take your word for it Though I have been in a couple of Whole Foods that make many HEBs seem diminutive. In the same vein, do you guys have Bucky’s in your region?

Our small town (~ 20,000) HEB is 83,000 and it doesn’t have a lot of the extra stuff mentioned above, it doesn’t seem that big to me. There is one being built about 45 minutes away that is planned at over 122,000 sq ft. with a 2-story BBQ restaurant. Sort of reinforces your point

I spelled it way wrong, it’s buc-ees.com/, a gas station known for having tons of gas pumps and a large building containing lots of snacks foods, some deli type foods, and kitschy stuff. Nice bathrooms.

dewryce and myshelly Is there a lot of grocery store competition in your areas? I wonder if that has to do with store size. We have so many grocery store options out here. Lot of big chains and lot of smaller stores. Also, I wonder if land prices/rent also keep stores smaller over here.

In my town for groceries we have HEB and Walmart. There is another grocery store about 20 minutes outside of town in two directions. Other HEBs From memory for regular grocery stores there are HEBs, Central Market, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s along with a small organic SunHarvest store in San Antonio. Plus Walmarts, Targets and Costcos (and probably Sams, but that’s just a guess.) But Dallas has tons of options.

Within 10 minutes of my house off the top of my head I can think of 3 Tom Thumbs 3 Krogers 2 Albertsons 1 Whole Foods 1 Central Market 1 Market Street 2 Aldi 1 Natural Grocers 4 Targets 3 Walmarts 1 Walmart Neighborhood Grocery 2 Costcos 2 Sams And that’s just what I can think of in my neighborhood. If you go a little further you get HEB, Fiesta, and some other places.
