Dinner out + a gift. Then we usually come back to our house for dessert -the girls don’t like cake so I make their request (dd1 is always chocolate cheesecake) and then we usually play games.

Depends on if it’s a milestone birthday or not and if they have a SO. Milestones we try to do something bigger. Otherwise it’s a nice gift or gift card, a cake and dinner if their choose whether it’s a favorite I make or going out.

I wish my kids lived close enough to celebrate with in person, but they don’t. So they get cash and a happy birthday call. Sometimes I get them a present if I see something perfect, but I’m not that great a gift-giver so that doesn’t happen all that often, hence the cash.

My adult children live out of state -so we mail them gifts and a card and phone them to wish them a happy birthday. On the rare occasion that we're all in the same area for a birthday -a dinner out as well and I'll make them a cake.

Our family- my dad, my sister, my nephews, sometimes my brother-in-law, and me go out to a restaurant. Sometimes it is the corner grill, sometimes it is fancier. It just depends on what the person wants to do. Some years I've received presents, some years not. My family is pretty flaky. Sometimes we don't go out on the actual date- we choose another day that is better for everyone.
That is about all we do.

I usually get them something I know they want from our conversations from Amazon and let them do the shipping and gift wrapping. Then we spend a long conversation chatting while they open. I also send them their favorite treat, one daughter loves cookies from a local to her cookie bakery, the other gets tacos deliver from her favorite place, and the same for the boys. It’s a fun way to celebrate when there is distance between us. We love zoom!

My mom would send a card and a check then tell us to treat ourselves to dinner with her cc she gave me with my name. This is the first birthday without her, but my dh and ds made it special. I'll probably do the same when my son is an adult.

We go out to eat and sometimes back to our house for cake. This year I bought DD a Nothing Bundt Cake (mini) instead of a whole cake. None of us need that much cake! We gave her a Target gift card so she could buy whatever she wanted. She's 28 and youngest DD will turn 24 in November. I'm sure we'll do something similar for her.

Out to dinner where he chooses and then back to his apartment for ice cream cake. I bought him some new tees and polos and DH gave him a check.

We have dinner together as a family and I give them a card with money. They are in the 30-40 range so I have no idea what they would actually use and love.

We don’t have children, but for our family birthdays we go out for dinner of celebrant’s choosing and give gifts. It’s almost never on the actual birthday as we live a couple of hours from each other so just whenever everyone can get together.

ah man - any other college parents reading this thread and dreading their kids being far away? I will say that the first birthday that oldest DD (now 28) was at college was hard. It sucked for me, but she had a great time with her friends. You just have to keep that in mind. Those firsts are hard but we survive.

Depends. Both daughters live a four hour drive, in opposite directions. I always send a gift and a card, or, if we happen to be together, a gift/card/dinner out. Birthdays were not a big thing in my family growing up but a HUGE thing in DH's family so we've carried on the tradition that birthdays are always celebrated, even if we aren't together.

Dinner and a gift (or gift card).. Usually whatever choice they want for dinner. We try to go somewhere different, not necessarily more expensive though. Usually dessert at home.. DS LOVES the Texas sheet cake (which is PW recipe)

We go out to dinner and give them money. Grandparents are always there. The best month is June, when we can cover three birthdays and fathers' day in one fell swoop.

Once they had their own families, they get a phone call. Between my 5 sons; I have 14 grandkids, and I go overboard for their birthdays instead.
