Hi, Scotch Brand foam mounting tape (by 3M) had been my go to for many years of cardmaking. I thought I used up my big roll long ago.
I managed to hunt down my last hidden, small, unused roll (2 mm thickness which is slightly less than 1/8"). I checked on amazon.com and read reviews on the newer version of Scotch and other brands. I've tried a few off brands in the past and haven't had much luck with them as they were difficult to cut into small pieces, & pcs. stuck to my scissors, etc.
I was shocked to learn 3 M had thinned the thickness to 1/16" and the foam is more stretchy & sticky when cut.
I stopped by a few stores (Michael's, Joann's, Staples, Wal Mart, Daiso, Home Depot, & Lowe's, etc.) to see what's available. Most of those stores have a variety of brands, ie, Gorilla, & Scotch, etc. and they're also 1/16" thick. I didn't want to buy FMT that was 1/16" thick thus requiring me to use up more FMT to increase thickness/dimension.
I visited a few Harbor Freight stores claiming they had their version of the FMT in stock. Seems what was shown online (quantities)
were different from what was actually in their stores. They may have a 1/8" thick version, 8 1/2', $1.99/roll. None of the stores
had it in inventory so I was guessing from their online photo as to it's thickness. The thickness wasn't mentioned on their website.
Michael's has a few brands of 1/16" thick FMT: Gorilla, Scotch, Elmer's (in kid's dept.), and perhaps slightly thicker: their
assorted Recollection's brand, and Thermo Web in large rolls avail. in white and black...(1/8" thick). I read some issues about
the Thermo Web FMT..difficult to cut with scissors into small pcs. as it wanted to stick to scissors and the foam was stretchy too.
Dollar Tree stocks Crafter's Square pop-dot tape in 3 sizes/multi pack (SKU #639277834898). Widths are: 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2"
thickness is 1/8". It cuts ok.
Found an interesting You Tube video by: Nina Marie Trapani (approx. 2 years ago): I use this foam type trick to prevent frustration
on when cutting (Scotch foam mounting tape). She expressed her thoughts about 3M thinning out the foam mount. tape to 1/16"
thick and how it stretched when she cut it & at times stuck to her scissors. She wanted be able to use this FMT w/o getting frustrated and got a light bulb moment when she applied the exposed/sticky foam side to freezer paper (she also suggested wax paper or the release paper you'd obtain if you Xyroned an item). Thus, she was able to use her scissor to cut thin strips w/o worrying her foam would stick to her scissors.

She used a sheet of fun foam and adhered Sook Wang double stick tape to the front & back. Then, she was able to cut the desired sizes as needed. Her Sook Wang DS tape might have been 5" wide?
I experimented with the above. I adhered 2 1/2" wide Eliz Craft double sided tape (aka Sook Wang) to my 2 mm thick fun foam on both sides.
It worked. It was easy to cut with scissors and the adhesive was strong. Didn't have any issues with stretchy foam nor inability to release the FMT from my scissors.
I also experimented with 1" wide Bazic Double Sided Tape (SKU #764608009260) on fun foam too. This DS tape can be found at
some dollar type stores. Bazic produces FMT but it's only 1/16" thick. This Bazic DS tape had good adhesion and the fun foam cut easily too.
I saw another YT video by Xyron: Quick Tip: Xyron DIY foam tape (approx. 11 years old). The gal took a pc. of fun foam
and inserted it into her Xyron machine. The clear sheet was "pushed down" and pulled off. The waxy release paper was
trimmed close to the fun foam then re inserted face down (non adhesive side) and cranked through the Xyron again and
the end result was adhesive on both sides of the fun foam.
I experimented with my Xyron #510 machine..and it worked. I used the acid free, permanent adhesive cartridge. Prior to tearing off the clear sheet, I used my bone folder to go around the fun foam perimeter to push down the adhesive. Adhesion was good.
The strongest FMT bond was the Dollar Tree FMT 1/8" thickness. But if you don't want 1/8" thickness but instead would like a
slightly thinner thickness, suggest you make your own with fun foam (2mm) The 2nd best adhesion was using the Eliz. Crafts (aka Sook Wang) DS tape.
Bazic's was almost as good as Eliz. Crafts adhesive. You don't need a WIDE tape to fill your fun foam. Cut your fun foam
to a manageable size and then apply your DS tape to both sides.
Fun foam goes on sale every so often. It'll be a less expensive way to deal with a consummable.
Hope to hear your thoughts soon. Thanks.
