Why in the freaking world is the dog not muzzled when others are around??? Muzzles keep the dog and everyone else safe. Muzzle training is fun and interactive for the dog (done properly). There are basket muzzles a dog can drink through and even be given a treat (by a person they aren’t going to bite obviously as you poke it thru!) My daughters border collie is a hot mess and she muzzled trained her and she loves her basket muzzle. Because it means she is going out in public so that’s fun! Polly looks a little scary maybe wearing it but she doesn’t know that. And she can go in crowded places and if she has a crazy moment everyone is safe! Polly actually hasn’t had any of those moments in years, intensive training and meds made her a very wonderful dog. But, not taking the risk, ever. This is not hard, how have they let this continue?! My daughters dog: same.

Maybe he smells their guns/gunpowder? Not joking... Just a guess, a thought? Maybe he feels they're too close to his people and it's causing aggression? He doesn't like their protective vibe? Their gear? Their energy? They're all starting to get nervous because he's a known biter, and he can sense that? Whatever it is, he clearly doesn't like the cut of their jib. Definitely not a good fit for him, for sure. Poor dog! The most logical explanation I’ve heard (not sure if this is true but it made sense, especially having owned a German Shepherd before) is that the dog senses the protective stance of the secret service and sees it as aggressive toward his people. German Shepherds as a breed are very smart and very protective. Obviously each dog is different but he could feel like he has to protect his family from outside threats.

I was trying how to say that, but you did better. They really do have an 'air' about them..

Having owned a very well trained German Shepherd for a number of years (15) I agree with this. It's in their DNA. It is a part of their makeup. You don't have to train a German Shepherd to do this-it is a part of them. They will lay down their lives to protect their owners and their families.
If this is what's going on all of the training in the world will not change this in this dog. He is "doing his job" as he sees it and if you know GSD's they take their jobs very seriously.
The best solution is to find a better place to rehome him. It's not his fault at all, in my opinion, for what's been happening. It's not fair to him or to the secret service. They've both been placed in an impossible situation.
Just wanted to add that this makes even more sense to me that the first dog (can't remember their names at the moment) who was also a GSD had a problem with biting the secret service. I think if the Bidens want a dog in the White House they should choose a completely different breed. One that doesn't have instinctive protective personalities that GSD's and dogs like that have. There are lots of dog breeds to choose from.

Why is that dog still there? Any other dog would have been put down by now.
He's got a few screws loose for that kind of living arrangement. I think at this point there should be lawsuits filed, don't know if that's even a possibility but come on. Enough is enough.

I agree with OP. If this dog was owned by a normal person it most likely would have been euthanized by now. Where I live after three bites, the dogs are done for. It's really sad, he is obviously struggling and shouldn't be in the white house.

Just read the article. I'm very pro Biden but it's hard for me to believe the Bidens "care deeply" for their staff since they let these biting incidents go on and on until they got to number 11 or 12 before finally removing Commander AND in the article it said that after some additional training Commander might return to the White House! If they cared so deeply for their staff Commander should have been gone after the first or second biting incident!
I believe all of the training in the world will not change this in a GSD and especially not in this dog. Poor Commander and poor staff!
This is why you should never choose a dog breed based on how it looks! I strongly wish folks would do their research beforehand and find out all about a breed's traits, their exercise needs etc. and then find a breed that matches their family. For the White House I wish the Bidens would go "back to the drawing board" and do the same, obviously not choosing a dog with protective or guarding instincts.
