Now that DS is 37, I'm finally going to start his album. He has an old baby album that I am taking a lot of stuff from so I'm not starting from scratch. Also, I've done his sport's album, 8th grade Washington, DC album and family travels albums. So it's not like I have ignored him completely. My question is this: I'm trying to decide how to organize it. Do you do them chronologically by year or do you do sections such as school, Halloween, Christmas, band, dances, etc.? Just curious. Thanks for any input.

I don't know if this helps as I have multiple albums for my son.
I have 2 "school" albums for him which house his school pics, report cards, etc by grade level. I also have 1 "graduation" album which has all his pics from graduation, his party & cards he received.
I also have 2 "birthday" albums which have his bday party pics by year (age 1-21 so far).
Then I have about 3 albums (about to be 4) that are everything else (not family travel, christmas or scouts - those have their own albums) and those are loosely chronological. He has a "baby" scrapbook that I also did and I may end up incorporating those layouts into his "everything else" books but for now it is separate.

I think in part that may depend on how your photos are organised - if they aren't chronological and you're not sure on dates, then by section might make more sense. Because then you can mix and max photos from different years and show say an overview of Halloween costumes through years without having to remember if it was 1990 that he wore this costume or was it 1989 or maybe 1991. I personally like chronological for almost all albums so I would certainly go that route myself but I also organise all my photos chronologically and I know not everyone does.
It might also be good to think about what your goal for the album is - are you looking for an overview that fits in one album? Or something more comprehensive in multiple volumes?
I only do 1st year albums for my kids (and sports, scouts...stuff like that) - they can take apart the family albums down the road if they want. But I did do an album for my mum for her 80th and I did it decade by decade with a sampling of photos from each decade. IF I was looking to do something similar for my kids, I might do a sampling from each year birth to 18? My 1st year album were done month by month.
Good luck

My kids albums are by year. I also have major trips in their own albums.

The very first albums I put together were for my four kids, who were all adults by then.
The first section was basically the same in each book: family tree, our homes when they were kids, our Disney vacation.
That was followed by similarly titled pages, but each unique for that individual: Welcome Baby Toddler years Summers at the lake. Elementary School Sports Interests High School Graduation Wedding Today

I scrapbook chronologically, by year (Jan -Dec). I include everything in my scrapbooks.
In your situation, I would do chronologically by grade. That way you could include everything that happened that School year. Fields trips Field day Friends Extracurricular activities

My brain could not handle me doing anything other than chronological.
If you were going to break it into categories, does that mean you would only use photos that fit those particular categories? If not, and you were going to also include random photos, where do you put those photos? Or do you make an extra category called "Random photos" ?

Although I don't scrap chronologically, I organize my layouts/albums in chronological order. Happy scrapping!

Yeah, I would say whatever makes you happy and/or doesn’t make your brain explode!
I enjoy having some pages that are a collage of the same event through the years but I often do that with duplicates or extra photos. Those kinds of pages are easier to make once the kid is all grown up and you have the full picture. But it depends on how many photos, how many albums, and how detailed you want to go. Also how much time and energy you have to devote to getting this done.

I'm another who only does chronological organization in my scrapbooks. My brain can't work any other way.
But, I do see the appeal in doing it by theme, if that makes sense to you.
I do have separate albums for my grandson's hockey stuff, plus for major trips I've taken.

Back when Stacy introduced her Library of Memories system I organized my albums by theme and have never looked back. I’ve never been a chronological scrapper and enjoy the freedom of scrapping whatever I want and filing it away in an album. When a theme becomes too large I put it in its own album.
It helps that everything is in D-ring albums until a themed section is large enough for its own post bound album (I have so many post bound albums I love so this is a system I recently implemented for flexibility).
When I am making an album for a specific purpose or person I plan the colors (if I care about a unified color palette) and put it in its own binder album. I then make my layouts using temporary stick on divider tabs on my page protectors as themes arise. When I have enough for an entire album I use those themes as transition pages in the final album.

I would do chronological, but the idea of comparing Halloween photos would be cool, too. I might do chronological for some things and then holidays. Hmmm...I can see why this is a tough decision. Either way, he's going to love it.
