I’ve been trying to volunteer for CASA (court appointed special advocate for kids) but they had only one training session this year and it was during the summer week I’d be on vacation.
Im going to the animal shelter to walk the dogs right now, but would like to add something human-centered as well. If you volunteer and find it fulfilling, would you mind sharing what you do?

I've gone to two trash clean-ups at local parks, so far. One was with my county, and the other one was a different organization (that also does tree plantings.) They provide the gloves, bags, and trash grabber things.
ETA: I volunteered heavily for my elementary PTA but due to having older kids in time consuming activities (HS sports...) not being able to "give 110%" at every event (aka work the entire event and not actually get to go with my child), and conflict of personalities, I am taking a break this year...
ETA 2: I grew up volunteering at my church, and various other things that came up, it would be weird for me not to do something...

My favorite volunteer gig right now is working behind-the-scenes at a thrift store to support our local non-profit hospice. I have personal ties to this hospice organization as my dad was on the original board when it was founded, and they provided services to both my parents and my husband's grandmother as they were dying.
I enjoy it because I can use my knowledge of vintage and antiques to help them identify and price items for the store. I also really like the other volunteers as well as the staff there. It's a pleasure to spend time there.
Is your desire for something human-centered to work directly with people - or just to benefit people? My volunteer efforts fall into the latter category.

I volunteer regularly (quarterly) at the Houston Food Bank. Although this is tied to our corporate volunteering goals, I would do this anyway. The last activity I did there, was making meal packs for kids to take home on weekends when they don't have access to the free meals at the school.
I also volunteer annually for CYCLE. It is an organization here that gives elementary-aged kids a free bike and helmet when they achieve their reading goals. We give a day of our time to build the bikes that go to these kids.

I'm THAT PTA mom. My kids are in HS so winding it down but have 3 more yr until my youngest graduates. I also have a small international position for my sorority. I pared this down so I could focus on my kids getting through HS. I will take on bigger roles as they become more independent (especially once they start driving).
I volunteer cuz I'm a SAHM, I have the time and have been involved since college. I have the skills and the time and someone has to do it. I enjoy it a lot and for the school stuff my kids still seem to like that I'm involved. I like knowing what is going on and helping out where I can.
I also sub (very) part time and was a teacher before kids, so education is an area I feel very comfortable with.
Not sure what exactly it will look like once the kids are more on their own or out of the house.

I volunteer weekly with a local youth ministry program that I participated in as a HS student. I stepped down from being a local lead for Moms Demand Action after the rest of the leadership moved/stepped away/etc. but did enjoy it. I am still part of the local group. I'm currently moving into local leadership for Free Mom Hugs and have gone to several of their state events in the past couple years. I've also volunteered as-needed at our local LGBTQ center.
My mom has always volunteered in various ways, and now I do the same. Being involved in the community helps me with the "extra" time I have now that my children are getting older and only with me half the time + is a way that I manage my anxiety and depression + is a good way to meet like-minded people and get out of the house since I WFH.

I don't volunteer currently, but I have volunteered in my kids classroom, at school carnivals (the worst), baked the communion bread at church, cooked and served at funerals in our small church, chaperoned marching band, worked in a booth at the old Metrodome for marching band, taught Sunday school, and more I am sure!
Right now I am focusing on my mental health, as well as housing my grandson so he can play hockey in MN. That is a full time job, as he can't drive yet.

I did quite a bit when my kids were younger and at home. I did volunteer for a lot of things at school, for their athletics and anything else they were in.
I am a SAHFW (Stay at Home Farm Wife) so my times is mostly taken up with farm stuff. Harvest now, but too wet for me to haul grain - so I am catching up at home. ...and tootlefarting around on the computer... lol
I don't really volunteer now, because my schedule really isn't free. I do have days where I could help with things, but I can't plan those very far out in advance. So I tend to not raise my hand for much now.

Every year a local organization does a food giveaway. We fill up 5,000 bags of food that is given away to the community. Each bag weighs about 30 pounds. This year, I was part of their fundraiser and raised close to $10,000.
Every other year, except during covid, there has been a wine tasting fundraiser for our eye foundation of which I'm a trustee. This year I co-chaired the event and we raised $42,000 for a retinal laser. Our club also puts on a Miss Teen Chinatown every year and I usually work the liaison/production part. We raise funding for scholarships for the teens and the rest goes back into the community.
I do it for the benefit of the community I grew up in and to help those who need it.

I used to voluntter with Child Life at our local trama 1 Children's Hospital. I loved it. I worked with the Hematology/Oncology Unit so the kids with various types of cancers and other blood related conditions. A few times I was called in to help out with Cardiac post transplant Unit.
I bonded with a sweet boy whose DS' middle name is. He was about 1 year old and had a rare form. He was ISO and wasnt able to go to the cool play room. Since he liked me, the nurses always had me suit up and go hang out in his room. They were always so happy to see me. As was he.
I would like to go back to volunteer again when I have time at some point. I am thinking either Acute Care or Hem/On again but would like to get training for NICU. You have to have a lot of hours under your name and then get specialized training. I loved when volunteers would come in and hang out with the kids while there.

Another idea is your local library either for story time or to help adults learn to read. Or book clubs, helping people find books, etc.
DD is going to volunteer at our local museum. They opened it up and this will help her with her degree choice.

I volunteer at my church. I was a teacher before I came to Germany, so I teach the First Communion program which we run about every second year. I love working with the children and it is much easier than having a regular classroom!

I volunteer as a board member at my church, and am on a region wide property development committee (basically repurposing surplus church property to serve our community)
I am a long time Girl Scout volunteer. I held many jobs over the years, in addition to being a troop leader. I am currently only doing outdoor trainings--as we travel a lot.
my parents were always volunteering.. a lot. so it was a family tradition to pitch in where you can. I used to volunteer with pta at schools, at gs alumnae group, and so on.
I like the social aspect, but I also like sharing my skills, esp about the outdoors, as doing so enables more girls to get outside!!

Since I still work, most of my volunteer work is through events my company sponsors. We’ll clean up a beach/park, throw a Christmas party for a kids organization, spend a day at a food bank, etc. After I retire I want to volunteer at an animal shelter.

Yes, I currently volunteer at two places.
1. the March of Dimes -- I take (usually single, low income) mothers who need a ride and/or support to their Dr appts. I don't go into the appt unless they ask, but I will go if they want me to so I can support them.
2. A local nonprofit serves single moms with kids (most have been homeless and need job skills) and when the nonprofit acquire a new house for the women and kids to live in (new build or renovated), I help with the decorating.
I have a big heart for single/young moms so I choose to help them. Neither volunteer position is every week (though, sometimes I do get busy) so the time commitment varies.

I deliver for Meals on Wheels once a week which is good for me since I could easily stay home every day of the week. I have a regular route and I enjoy the little chats with my clients. At least once during my route, someone will tell me it is so nice of me to do this but I assure them that it really does work both ways. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I also volunteer with a local resource centre when they need help with events throughout the year such as special coffee mornings and the like.

I work a rotating schedule... ifmy days off are during the week then I will go to the meals for wheels and help make up plates to be delivered... I dont drive the food because I dont have a consistent schedule.. but the help to make food and dish it up and clean up is always appreciated... if you had the time they are always needing drivers to deliver..
Also because I am cheap.. I volunteer as an usher at our local theater... We get to watch the performances from the back when everyone is seated... I either scan tickets or direct people to the seats.. not hard and yay free performances.. I enjoy it... we also go thru and pick up all the programs and trash after its over..

I wonder if that's true for a lot of us who are serial volunteers. We volunteer in part because of the way we were raised and the examples that were set for us.

I volunteer as much as my full-time job allows me to, mostly at church. I have volunteered my whole life as a Girl Scout Leader, in various church opportunities (food bank, etc.), when our daughters were in school with the Music Booster program... it's just how I'm wired, I guess. My husband will volunteer if he is working with me, but he doesn't seek out opportunities.
I'm looking forward to retiring in a few years so that I can volunteer at the local elementary, helping children who need a little extra help with their reading skills. I did this when my children were in school and enjoyed it. I recently spoke with a friend who teaches there to see if this is still a possibility (a lot has changed since my adult children were littles!) and she said that they still use volunteers for this.

My Mom always volunteered at our schools. When the kids were young I volunteered at their schools and for their extra-curricular activities; Girl Scouts, Sea Scouts, Sea Explorers, etc. I also had my kids come along and volunteer at food banks, and when our temple served meals at the homeless shelter every year the week of Christmas. Now that they are adults, they have continued to volunteer in their communities.
I recently ended a 20 year volunteer position with our local IRS Volunteer Income Tax Preparation program. I held many positions and am burnt out.
Currently I volunteer with our Jewish Community Center's senior program by sending out donation letters and birthday cards (from home) and with our County's Adult & Aging Department on their Financial Abuse Specialist Team. We help law enforcement gather evidence of financial crimes against seniors.
If you are looking for something else to do, see if you have a volunteer center in your area or check with your city or county offices for other opportunities.

DH and I used to volunteer with Meals on Wheels -- this is a great place to donate your time. And if you don't want a regular, weekly route you can always sign up to drive when they need a fill in driver.

I'm on the board for our summer camp. I do a lot of work with Camp Fire. When the kids were little (and I took three years off from teaching to be home with them) I did volunteer work in their classrooms and at preschool. I did a little PTA volunteering (but quite frankly, it drove me nuts so I kept it to a minimum).
When I retire, I'd like to volunteer in an adult literacy program. I might volunteer at our local schools too, especially with middle schoolers who are struggling. They are my people!

I continue to volunteer with Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts even tho my kids are no longer in Scouts.
My DD graduated but getting her Gold was a frustrating process. So, I am now trained to work with Girl Scouts on their higher awards; I am on the Gold Award panel for my council. This weekend I am working with my old co-leader to put on an Encampment for over 250 people - this is the first time this event has taken place since COVID, so we are shocked at the response.
I also volunteer on the Committee level for my son's troop - he just turned 18, so he jsut aged out, so I work with the committee for advancement, and work with the Scouts on merit badges.

I volunteer through my church and also through the school system.
My church has multiple events during the year. You don’t have to be a member to volunteer or to get things. We have a coat drive, a back to school drive, a food pantry and a wellness fair. My church is in Harlem. Every time people talk about NYC or Harlem there is this image that everything is gentrified and everyone has money. All they have to do is come to one of our events and see the 5 people deep line around the block an hour before the scheduled start to get a different perspective. I do it because I’m not a billionaire so all I have is time to give to people who need it more than I do.
I also volunteer as a mentor to a public school high school student. One thing I realized back when I was in high school was that there was a HUGE difference between what I had access to as a private school student and what my friends had access to in public school. For example my headmaster at the time had no problem running up to Harvard to rub elbows and advocate for one student. 30+ years after starting at my school there are times I mention I went there and the name recognition is instant. Half the time my friends were lucky to even know their guidance counselor. I started volunteering to try and bring my knowledge to someone who may not be familiar with what’s available.
As a volunteer I can only do so much but I can certainly be an ear and a cheerleader. There is a rigorous training program and constant feedback from the teachers and students involved. The young lady I’m mentoring this year is a joy to work with, even though it took us a minute to get there.

I volunteer once a month at First Baptist, They have a lunch program, every saturday they provide a hot meal for the food insecure. All the food is donated by local markets and or restaurants. We provide soup, salad and a hot main course along with fruit and dessert.
It is very satisfying to be helping those in need. I have learned a lot in the several years I have been doing this... I have a great respect for those we serve.

My favorite volunteer job by far was being a "book buddy" at an elementary school in an impoverished part of town. I went once a week and read to two first graders and played learning games with them. It combined my passion for reading w/ my love of little kids, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
I quit volunteering when the schools closed due to covid. I didn't start up again when the schools reopened, because I've been spending so much time with my aunt at her dementia center. However, this thread makes me realize how much I miss working with the kids and I just might sign up again.

I did a ton of volunteering when my kids were in elementary school. I went to all the PTO meeting, volunteered for events, had control of the PTO bulletin board and newsletter. I also did the yearbook for the school for 7 years. I was a Girl Scout leader for 5 years (18 girls in the troop), and was on the food committee for Varsity Poms and worked concession stands. Once the kids were out of school, I also volunteered for a local animal shelter for a couple of years. I've adopted families around the holidays through a local program too. Currently, I'm not volunteering in person anymore, but I donate funds monthly to the shelter and food bank. Around here, they need the funds more than physical help. I think some of these things are just getting back to pre-covid type needs.
