DH and I are planning our next beach trip for January and we are looking at going to Cap Cana. Has anyone been there? What did you think? Any must do's? Anything to avoid?
We have pretty much narrowed down that we will stay at the Hyatt Zilara but are open to other suggestions.

I know several (mostly much younger) people who have vacationed or destination wedding in the Dominican Republic. Most have stayed at Punta Cana. Always reports of theft and general sense of it was not awesome.
The Haiti adjacent thing keeps me away.

Do not have high expectations. I found that Cuba has nicer beaches and better maintained properties than in the DR.

I went a few years ago and stayed at Secrets Cap Cana- I did a tour outside of the resort but mainly stayed on site and used the spa, lots of beach time, good food and the night entertainment was good. The beaches were nice, they had a seaweed issue but had men and trucks out every morning to clean it up. Transfer to and from the airport was easy and the resort was super secure. It was one of my favorite closest to the states trips and I went on a girls trip but had my own room so it was good good. The first pic was on the beach (obviously) and the second is the view from the bathtub on my balcony where i spent a TON of time with a book and room service.

Our friends went to the DR in early 2020. The guys ended up getting drugged, presumably to make the girls easier to get to. They were off resort when this happened.

We were in Punta Cana on an Iberostar resort. We loved it so much we went back a few years later. Never had problem on or off the resort. We don't generally return to the same exact place, but we really enjoyed this resort.

We have stayed at Secrets Cap Cana twice and had a great vacation. My DH is a bicyclist and has cycled off resort and never had a problem. He actually had an accident one trip and experienced nothing but kindness from several people who helped him get back to the resort. He was far enough away that the first person couldn’t get him all the way, but they helped him get another lift and no one would accept any money from him. We have found the people there to be wonderful. The Hyatt Zilara is really close to the Secrets. I know we have walked past it on the beach. I didn’t think it was adults only, but saw the website says it is now.
