I was very shocked by this story and surprised it took so long for the truth to come out, especially since her family members knew she was lying.

Wow. She started with a lie and really embellished it over time.

She lived a lie during her entire career as a musician? Wow…she sure had everyone snowed.

Same here - I can't imagine why they just let it go on for decades. Someone said they suspect she started the lie since the '60s were a big era for anything 'earthy' (that isn't the word they used but I can't find the story again to get the right one). She was talented but without the connection to the first nations, she probably would have just been another 60's singer - she told the story to stand out. I have no idea what her real motives were and I can't imagine she will be forthcoming now. I follow a few first nation's people on instagram and twitter and one said that her biggest problem with this type of story is that it makes it harder for true first nation's voices to be believed.

I haven’t watched the show on CBC or read much about it but I can’t believe she went to such lengths. 😕

I wonder if this is one of those cases where the lie becomes the truth for the person... that in their mind it is fact.
I have heard of this many times, that even though there is evidence and fact proving the lie, the person has so deeply imbedded the lie, that is the truth to them now.

Does anyone tell/value the truth any more? I am so sick and tired of liars.

This story is so very odd - this is from Blacklocks today - it is behind a paywall but here is an interesting quote from her.

I call BS. If she really wanted to know she could have done a simple DNA test. Oh I fully agree!! And she never even needed to do that - she always knew who her parents were; she threatened her family if they came forward all those years ago. She definitely found an angle to exploit and milked it for all it was worth!!

From Wikipedia In December 1964, Arthur Santamaria, Sainte-Marie’s paternal uncle, wrote to the Wakefield Daily Item, who published his editorial that Sainte-Marie "has no Indian blood in her" and "not a bit" of Cree heritage. So two instances where someone did say something but no one pieced it together until 50, 60 years later. Three different kinds of First Nations she apparently was. She used the 60s Scoop as a reason for her unknown origins which just played on everyone's sympathy. She has many accolades, including the Order of Canada, one of the highest honours you can receive. Which you have to be CANADIAN to receive. @bridget in MD she wrote Up Where We Belong. I've mostly just heard of her as a famous First Nations person from Saskatchewan. I'm not familiar with her music.

If she really wanted to know she could have done a simple DNA test. That was part of her exploiting the 60s Scoop for her own gain. Things were covered up, records falsified or destroyed so she just let people believe that is what happened to her.
