This will definitely keep me from upgrading to the Cameo 5 any time soon. I’m sure it cuts beautifully but that’s a steep buy-in for me.

I assume that’s the cost of the electrostatic mat by itself. That’s enough to make me resist any temptation to upgrade to the Cameo 5, although I wasn’t really tempted. My Cameo 3 is working well. I wish they hadn’t discontinued it.
I wonder if this is intended to be supplemental more than as a replacement. Perhaps for those who want to be able to set up a second mat while the first is cutting. I had assumed that the electrostatic mat wouldn’t need to be replaced. Maybe I’m wrong, though.

Given the price of the mat it is also my assumption that it wouldn't need to be replaced. Given how many mats I have bought for my original Cameo, I could see this as a less wasteful long-term solution. Fortunately, my original Cameo is still going strong, but at some point I am sure I will need to replace it.

I haven't heard about this.. I'll have to google it. I'm happy with my Cameo 4, but to never have to buy a mat again would sway me!

I believe the Cameo 5 does NOT come with the electrostatic mat (just the new Curio does). You can use traditional sticky mats with the Cameo 5, the ES mat is an add on/enhancement for those who want it. Silhouette hasn't made it seem like the ES mat is a consumable/will need to be replaced, but with it being new technology, maybe once people use it for long periods of time, we will find out it eventually does need to be.

Oh sorry and wanted to add that Melissa from Silhouette School said that usually she and other high profile crafters are given machines to test drive ahead of launch. When these machines were launched (last month?) no one had used them, although they were demonstrated at a Silhouette retreat. She said that the ES mat sounds like a cool idea, but she was doubtful of some of its claims due to its performance at the launch (most specifically, being able to cut multiple pieces of paper at once). She does now have a machine and is testing it, but like with any new technology, I personally prefer to wait until it's on the market for a while to see how the item actually performs. My Cameo 1 is still going strong so I'm not looking to buy, but I do like keeping up with the new technology to see what's available.

Per the Silhouette website, the Electrostatic Mat (available in black or white; sold separately) is an accessory - not necessary - only for cutting delicate materials with the Cameo 5. It "holds thin materials in place rather than rollers or a sticky cutting mat, so "thin materials will not tear or curl when removed." ETA: I haven't heard about this.. I'll have to google it. I'm happy with my Cameo 4, but to never have to buy a mat again would sway me! Silhouette's fall release is discussed (with links) here. Note the Electrostatic Mat, sold separately, is not a replacement for adhesive mats. It is an alternative to adhesive mats only when cutting delicate materials. An adhesive mat is still necessary for thick &/or textured materials. HTH

From the Silhouette site:
The Electrostatic Mat attachment for the Cameo 5 makes loading and unloading materials cleaner and easier than ever before. It gives firmer holds to your delicate materials* without damaging them while removing them from the mat.
The Electrostatic Mat has an electrically conductive network that builds up static electricity to hold materials in place during cutting. Because the material can be held without an adhesive mat, it is now possible to cut materials without damaging them upon removal. Additionally, when unloading the cut project, there is no tearing or curling, and clean-up is a breeze.
*The Electrostatic Mat works best with smooth, non-permeable materials. Materials with a heavy texture will not work with the Electrostatic Mat.
— So it seems to work best for thin or “regular” media — not the thick stuff. hhhmmm…
