HI everyone... Is this still the favorite printer to buy? I am maybe going to ask for it for Christmas.
I wasn't sure if there was anything else out that was better?

Does it use actual ink? Can you print text in non glossy paper?

Does it use actual ink? Can you print text in non glossy paper? I don’t know about printing on non glossy paper but it does use real ink. I find a cartridge lasts for about a 100 pack of paper. I think the ink is $35ish dollars. However I place several photos on one 4x6 print so I get more than 100 actual photos. I scrap in travelers notebooks so I don’t need full sized photos.

Good to know. I'm looking to print some photos at crops, but I really want something to print journaling. There are portable printers, but they are all thermal.

Have any of you purchased a certified Epson refurbished PM400? They're only $139 right now on Epson's website and I was thinking about buying it refurbished since it's almost $100 cheaper than new.

The PM-400 I ordered had issues. I finally contacted them just before my warranty ended (this was about 6 or more years ago). They ran through all of the troubleshooting stuff and finally said it needed to be returned. They replaced it with a refurbished one. I’ve printed hundreds of pictures on it without any problem. For $100 less I would buy the refurbished one, if it has some kind of warranty.

I did last year. The first one I received did not work out of the box. I contacted them, and immediately they sent me another one. It works perfectly. I would not hesitate to do it again as long as it’s directly from Epson. It is a great deal!

I really love my PM-400! I had a Selphy first, and I was just never super happy with the quality, so I only used it in a pinch. Now that I have the Epson I use it nonstop, and it’s been a game changer for me, especially with projects like December Daily.

i have both the selphy and picturemate 400. Tne PM400 is much better. i purchased a REFURBISHED model on amazon this summer and have printed 100s of pictures without any issues. i use the premium glossy paper and have excellent results.
i use the pm400 at our second home and really want to switch it with the SELPHY from home. i would ditch the selphy but i have over 10 packs of the ink/paper i scored on amazon warehouse.

I have one and love it! Originally had the selphy but I struggled with dull colors from my prints and nothing I did fixed the problem. My only complaint about the pm-400 is that ink doesn't seem to be in stores...only online which is fine, unless they are out of stock which seems to happen. I can get through Amazon but sometimes the price is higher by almost $20 each. I'm in Canada if that makes the difference maybe?

I also recommend the PM400. I started with a Canon Selphy and it was decent but one day it just stopped functioning, so I took that as a sign and replaced it with the PM400. It's great quality and has been a workhorse. I like the collages I can make with it that enable me to print photos of different sizes. I also like that it prints 5x7. There is even a way to get it to print something longer, I think. I can't exactly remember the details, but Cathy Zielske has a video that explains it: PM 400 CZ Video. It's based on a technique from Kerri Bradford that Cathy stepped out in video form. Highly recommend. I've had my PM400 for probably 7 years, but I came across a PM400 on Amazon for right around $100 a few years ago so I grabbed it. My thought at the time was that they might be coming out with a newer model and that was why this one was so cheap, but I don't think that was the case. It sat for a while but now I take it to crops occasionally and I take advantage of that concentrated time to print lots of photos. It's a nice little luxury to have a printer that I can just tote with me for that purpose, without breaking down the PM400 that is permanently set up in my scrap attic. I figure eventually my main PM400 will give out and then I will have a backup. I guess that's its own endorsement, also: I like this thing enough that I actually have a backup!

I wonder if there’s a catch. Like, do the others come with paper or other items? ckbdepot.com/product/epson-c11ce84201-picturemate-pm-400-compact-photo/

So happy I found this thread! I really wanted one of these several years ago but landed on the Selphy; while I do really like my Selphy, $139 is hard to pass up. Just ordered one!

Does it use actual ink? Can you print text in non glossy paper? I use the Epson PM-400 to print journal cards on matte cardstock. The colors aren’t as vivid and shiny as a color laser but since the card is going in a pocket, it looks fine. Just set the paper type to plain paper in the settings. Or print on photo paper for really bright colors. I use the ultra premium glossy paper. Keep an eye on sales at Epson for paper, sometimes it is cheaper than Amazon.

I just Googled Epson PM-400 and several retailers have it on sale for $179 - $199 right now. Wondering if its been discontinued and inventory needs to be sold. Could the price go even lower?
