This is a spin-off of the classic book thread. I appreciate that some people read and reread physical books and that for some it is a collection.
For me, I never bought a lot of books. I never reread anything so it seemed a waste of money to buy them. Mostly I checked them out at the library. A few years ago, I heavily paired down the ones that I had to about 14 books I am keeping primarily for sentimental reasons. I also have my collection of 56 Nancy Drew hardback books from childhood. There are about a dozen or more craft books - knitting, quilting and sewing reference in a cabinet. I keep a few paperbacks to take to the beach that I get at the library book sale. DH has an even smaller stash of books. I also purchase old non-fiction I can cut up for craft projects.
I have a book going all the time but it is an audiobook mostly. When I 'read,' it is typically an ebook.
What about you? Are you a collector? Do you reread books? Do you buy hard copies or read ebooks or listen to audiobooks?

I am a collector. I have 3 Stephen king paperbacks coming on Thursday. I have one going right now. My bookshelves are full of books. I dislike ereaders and audiobooks.

I mostly work on a computer with my head in spreadsheets all day. I really tried a Kindle but I just didn't feel compelled to use it because my eyes and brain just really couldn't take focusing on another screen after work. This really impacted my ability to read.
When the kids were smaller, I used the library with them. But as they got older, we went less and I began buying books more often. But nobody I know really wants to read the books I like (non-fiction) so for a while there I kept dropping them off at the little free library box in my neighborhood.
Finally Jeremy had a come to Jesus meeting with me and said he thought I was being wasteful of money and paper by buying all these books and then just giving them away all the time. So I renewed my library card. Every once in a while if the library doesn't have an actual book of something I want to read, I will buy it. But that's rare anymore. And honestly it's probably better this way. I get a new cookbook every time I'm there too. And I would never buy so many cookbooks. That's fun for me as I enjoy cooking.

I have some physical copies of favorite books in my home but I have been wanting less things in my home so have been trying to par down the books I own. If someone gives me a book they are done reading, I try to pass it on to someone else or I donate it to a Little Free Library in my town. Most of the reading I do nowadays is on my Kindle which prevents more things from coming into my house!

I buy books that I love and will I re-read them…maybe or maybe not. I just like them on my shelf lol.
I do buy books but pretty much are all from goodwill! You can find good ones there. After I read them, I’ll donate them back. I have about 100 books to be read (many are books in a series). Saying that, I do mostly read on my kindle 😜

I used to use the library a lot, especially when my kids were younger. We now live in Germany, so it’s not as practical - they don’t have a lot of books in English, which limits me a bit. I buy a mix of physical and e-books. Mostly, I read fiction as ebooks and buy hard copies of non- fiction, especially craft and cook books. There is a group here who do a big second hand English book sale twice a year, and I have picked up a lot of fiction from there cheap - €2 or 3 each - which is cheaper than kindle books. It helps that I assist with sorting incoming books and work the first sale day, so I get first dibs on what’s there. I also send books I have read and no longer want to them.

I re-read a lot of books, mostly on my kindle. I honestly prefer a physical book because it is easier for me to go back and find a certain passage in a physical book, but it isnt practical to have a ton of physical books. I have some, but not the way I used to

No. I love to read but it is a rare book that I keep. I always feel that I get my money's worth if I pass a book along after I read it. My daughter, however, is a different story. Her bedroom (which she no longer occupies as she now lives in NY) is full of books.

To answer your question, I do a mix. I still have history books that were part of my secondary education on my book shelves.
I will buy hard copies of reference books, craft books etc because I don't like looking back and forth through a kindle version. Happy to read a novel on a kindle, straight through, no need to refer back to pictures or maps.
I mostly buy second hand books from an online bookseller here in the uk, although I think they supply worldwide. Why? because they are saving books from landfill and are giving them a second life. WOB (World of Books) if anyone is interested.
I thought my kid would love digital versions but no, has completely rejected digital books and only wants physical books. And has a couple of bookcases of amazing choices.
Dh reads like it's going out of fashion, early on in our marriage we were swamped with his collection of hard copies, we sold about 400 books just to get a handle on the situation. For him, the kindle has been brilliant.
Despite that, we still have multiple bookcases, stuffed to the gunnels.

I love books. I held onto some of my books that I read as far back as middle school and they're on my shelves now. I use the library every week, but I do purchase some, although I've backed way off because I ran out of space. I'd rather have books in my house than most anything else, so we've made space for all the shelves for me and my children. We leave some empty for the library books, to help try to keep them in one place, but we donate after we've weeded them out.
I tried the e-readers and it's just not for me. I re-read some of my books and I like to put flowers or leaves or the current bookmark my child made in the book and find it when I re-read. Audiobooks are great when I'm walking, but I've gotten away from them since DH has joined me.

I love to read. When I was a child I would spend any money I had on books and loved to go to the bookstore. I still have a lot of books but don’t buy many now. I prefer to listen to audiobooks or read on my kindle so I can adjust the font. My mom still reads physical books so she will pass books on to me but I should just start telling her to keep them unless I know it’s one I want to read. I have too many on the shelf to be read. I do go through them ever now and then and donate some.
I have an audible membership but get most of my books (ebooks and audio) from the library.

I can see 20 hardback books from where I am sitting…mine. Plus, the corners of 2 of my husband’s books. There are 2 more bookshelves and books amongst my scrapbook stuff (scrapbook related, of course). This is just the family room.
The only room with no books is the bathroom.
All 3 of us are readers and have our own collections. DH has read all of his. Unsure if my son has a TBR pile.
I do have a TBR pile I will never get through. If I know I will not read a book again, it gets donated. I buy physical books from my favorite authors. The Kindle is useful for not allowing the physical books to get out of control.

When I was younger I used to reread books all the time; it's very rare that I do now. I have tons of physical books, but switched to a Nook (and then a Kindle) about 12-13 years ago because I was running out of space to keep them. Now I mostly listen to audio books. I can't remember the last time I bought a physical book.

I used to have a lot of books at home, most of which I bought at book sales (like when the library has its big one twice a year), or yard sales, etc. My kids also had a lot of books when they were younger, from the same sources. I participated in a children's consignment sale for years and so many of their books came from there. We also used the library.
Once they got older they had fewer books in the house but we always continued to use the library. Now as an adult my dd has her own copies of her favorite books, and she collects foreign language copies of her favorite, "Pride and Prejudice". lol. Mostly she uses the library, for physical copies of books and for audiobooks. She doesn't use a Kindle as much although she owns an older Paperwhite.
A few years ago I did a huge purge of my bookshelves and kept only a few for sentimental reasons, or because they were my absolute favorites that I reread often. One problem that I have now is that I can't read the regular sized font in books unless I'm in a very bright light. So I prefer large-print, or the Kindle version. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Kindle for that reason (enlarging the font) and for how easy it is to read in bed. And I can borrow books whenever I want without having to drive to the library.
Also, I do reread books. I reread the Narnia books all the time, and I do own a set. Since I can read one of those books in one day I will read the regular books since I can sit near a window with light. But I also have them on my Kindle. I also will reread a few old favorites every once in awhile -- "A Little Princess", "The Secret Garden", the Tripod trilogy, Mitford, "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit", to name a few that come to mind. I have physical copies of those and a few of them permanently on my Kindle.

I like physical books and other reading material. I just cannot get into the kindle.
Forget audio books. I can’t pay attention.
I do periodically donate books if I haven’t passed them onto friends.

I am 100% eBook/Audiobook now. Mostly audiobooks, which I used to hate. I do not want books laying around - I am trying hard to have less stuff in my house. Books are something I try to keep at a minimum.
I do love getting my eBooks/Audiobooks from my local Library system. I do have an Audible subscription for those that are going to take months to get from the Library. I can have 10 books on my waitlist, so I usually have something that comes available in a timely manner.

I absolutely love to read. I could read all day every day if I didn’t have to do all those other regular life things! Thankfully I’m retired so I have a lot of free time on my hands.
I have my own “library” which used to be one of my sons bedrooms when he lived at home. It has shelves with about 400 books to be read. Having said that, I rarely buy books except at the annual library sales where I can get a bag of books for $5.00. I trade books with my mom and other friends so my stock pile rarely gets smaller.
I’ve tried using a Kindle but I enjoy holding a physical nook and turning the pages.

I am a "collector" of many things, books included. Growing up we had one bookcase made from apple boxes and it housed all the books our family owned. I read and reread them all over and over. I longed to live in a house with one of those two story library rooms, just so I could marvel at my reading choices. (Ds & family actually bought a house with an office with 20 ft ceiling, and he joked about turning it into my library).
I LOVE the feel of a "real" book in my hands. Love to flip back and forth to check details, reread parts. I don't often reread whole books, but sometimes I do, especially if there is a new book out in a series.
But lately all of my book purchases have been iBooks. My iPad is easier to hold than a book and it lights up for night reading. It doesn't add extra weight when I travel.
Over the years I have culled my books, giving tons away to the local library and to a thrift store. I am now thinking I should go through the ones that are left (two 3x6 foot bookcases), keep only the ones I truly cherish, and put my scrapbook albums on those bookshelves. Maybe I will do that in the new year. But I do love looking at those shelves of books...

I like to buy memoirs and books from authors or people I really enjoy. But for the most part I check out most of my books from the library or from the Libby app. My neighborhood has several free libraries as well so if something catches my eye I will grab it and replace it with something I’m willing to give away.

I've always been a big reader and really got back into it a few years ago. I re-read books all the time...I miss the story and characters like they were friends. That being said, I do a mix of ebooks and hardcover. Most ebooks I get are ebooks because then I can have the next one ready to go when I finish the first. But there are some books that I just want as physical copies. I will admit that some books I have as both. Starting out a series in physical copy and then just wanting the ease of an ebook. I do utilize my library and have found some new great authors there.

I am a librarian who mostly reads nonfiction. I have very few books in my house because I borrow them from my library! I do own some that I refer to regularly (favorite cookbooks, distance running/nutrition, and a few sentimental ones) but for the most part I don’t have as many as people expect. The titles I own are ones I tend to write notes in.
I do use the Kindle app on my iPad for some books and magazines but for me it’s mostly print.

I love physical books and have a huge craft reference library that is sadly not currently accessible because I don’t have the shelf space for them to be out. I used to buy a lot of books for DD because there are some favorites that she has read a few times, but as she has been getting older and reading more on her own she’s doing that less and less.
For that reason I took her to the library and got her a library card last spring so she could check out the books she wants to read. Last week I donated to her former elementary school two huge boxes of books from her shelves that she had outgrown and filled two Little Free Libraries with the contents of another box of her books that were in slightly less pristine condition (books that we acquired used, that came to us that way). There’s also a stack of hardcover books in a series that I’m going to try to sell before the holidays since they’re in perfect condition and still very popular. I’m pretty selective these days about the books that I buy for myself and would just as soon check out a book from the library if I’m confident I won’t want to read it more than once.
I’m not a fan of e-readers or audiobooks unless I’m going somewhere on a longer road trip. There have been a few times I’ve had to take solo long distance drives and audiobooks are a lifesaver for situations like that.
ETA: I will admit to being a bit of a cookbook junkie though. I like a good cookbook and have quite a few of them, most being dessert or cookie recipe books, even though I tend to get a lot of recipes online.

I LOVE READING !
Many years ago I was a hard cover book reader and had hundreds. Then a vendor gifted me a kindle when they first came out and I’ve never looked back. Donated most of my books and then had so much more room In my home.
I love everything about my Kindle Paperwhite. So comfortable to read without having to hold it open like a physical book and never have to worry about the light in a room. I now have 4 of them and organize my choices by recommended samples, TBR pile, new authors for me and freebies. I also love that my close friends and I can all read the same back at the same time.
I still visit book stores and love to browse and add to my every growing TBR list.
Forgot to mention, besides a couple of Christmas books, I’ve never re-read a book. My TBR pile is so huge, I just move forward.

I love to read…but as some one said I don’t like the clutter. I also rarely seem to be able to sit and read so I switched to audio books. I can hike, walk, clean, drive, craft etc and enjoy ‘reading’.
I thought I would hate audio books…I don’t (unless you get the odd narrator and you so t care for their voice or style). I also noticed I walk/hike farther because I want to continue hearing the book (I wear bone headphones so i can still hear the outside world)

I love books and reading and so does my whole family. We own a ton of physical books - the vast majority bought used for a quarter or a dime or fill a bag for $5. I do donate anything I don't plan to re-read after offering it up to the rest of the family.
Everytime we visit the older kids or they visit us or we're mailing boxes back and forth - there are ALWAYS books headed one way or the other. I currently have 5 paper ream boxes of books waiting to give them - 3 are ones DD23 picked up for a dime a piece at the library book sale during her recent visit but didn't have space in her luggage for; the other 2 are either books I've read that either DD23 or DS32 want next or books we've picked up for them at a library booksale or thrift store.
I also read on my Kindle - almost exclusively free ebooks via Amazon - and on my phone - library books via Libby.
The only NEW books I've gotten for many years have been gifts. We do a family book exchange at Christmas where we all draw names and buy a book for the person whose name we drew = then on exschange day -we all unwrap them and spend the rest of the evening reading together (with a candy charcuterie board). And my older kids will buy me a book for my birthday usually.
I love libraries but our local one has very limited hours and a not great selection. So while I have a library card - we rarely make it there. This is the first place I've lived where the library wasn't a regular part of my weekly routine - which makes me sad.

I have several thousand books. I do use apple books to read fun fiction, my dh uses it almost totally.
but I reread books all the time, many books I have are probably not available electronically..and then there are reference books that are easier to deal with as a book not online. my son loves his books.. his wife loves her shoes.
