DD and fam are moving in a few days from a 2BR to a 3BR home. The guest room (3rd BR) / office is spacious and has an attached 4piece bath and small closet. It has a separate entrance from the street but you have to go outside and go up a flight of stairs to get to the main living area and other bedrooms.
We will be staying there and helping out the week of Thanksgiving and I'm trying to think of items we will want to have access to, especially at night.
I don't want to take up too much space but I'm thinking of:
- - electric kettle with a cute box filled with assorted instant coffee packets and tea bags, sweetener and 2 mugs
- - Brita filter and 2 water glasses
-- 2 each: small plates, bowls, utensils for snacks
- - small bottle dish soap (can be refilled upstairs) and kitchen towels to dry any dishes that are used
I ordered a paring knife with a sheath to slice apples, etc. Maybe a small cutting board?
Please add your ideas! TIA~!

Bar fridge with bottled water. Coffee maker.. Why does it have a separate entrance? Any way of opening it up to the rest of the house?

Do you want instant coffee or a Kuerig that makes REAL coffee and some pods?
Especially if you get up earlier than everyone else ...
Check to see what bedding she has ... you might want to bring your own pillows and duvet ...

Thank you both for your replies and great ideas! calgaryscrapper - I think they'll get a bar fridge later. I thought of that but they are needing to make tons of decisions right now and I don't want to add any stress. They have a 3 week escrow so things are moving quickly and they are working, parenting a one year old. For now I'm taking a bunch of stuff that i think they will want to keep there, but that I can bring home if they don't want. And I have only seen this room in the listing photos, don't know how they might set it up. DH and I have two Brita pitchers we keep on the counter and would love to have one there as well. (We don't do bottled water and neither do they.) Their townhouse is listed as a 2BR 2.5 bath with separate 1BR w full bath. They like the option of being able to rent it out or offer it to visiting staff for the two non-profits they work for. (I think it's an odd layout and wish the lowest level had access to the second floor too.) leannec - I am allergic to coffee!! (I'm a very special snowflake) and DH has gotten used to drinking Starbucks Via instant coffee at home. He used to grind fresh beans and brew his coffee but that's gone by the wayside as his work life has become even more demanding. We did provide bedding for the guest room bed when they first moved into their current apartment, and we love it.

Bottles of water. Snacks. Tissues. Paper towels or napkins. Electric tea kettle (with small bottle of milk and sugar). Mug that has only been used for tea. Extra toilet paper. Ear plugs.

Agree with the kettle and extra paper goods, and linens for the bathroom (a rug?). DH’s parents have a separate little apartment attached to their house as well, but with a mini kitchen. Adding the fridge at a later date is a great idea. And you do want that little cutting board if you’re planning on cutting fruit. Dish scrubber (maybe one that holds the dish soap). Hand soap & refills. A wash tub that includes a drying rack to wash dishes in (instead of sink) and to dry dishes outside of bathroom. Some paper shades if the windows aren’t already covered. Small trash can and trash bags. Tote to hold all of your supplies out of the way for when you’re not there. Small first aid kit, especially pain meds, stomach meds, ointment and bandaids. Rug to wipe feet when you enter. Broom and dustpan.

Oh, and a small laundry basket to carry linens to wash in the main house. We’d always drop something when we cleaned up after when we stayed, and the stairs would make that especially important. Maybe a laundry bag for safety reasons.

If you need an electric kettle, I just bought one this weekend when I was out of town and it was needed. I already have two at home. If you’d like it, I could run it down to you. GIFT, not selling it. Be sure you have spoons and napkins to go with the coffee/tea service. Little cocktail napkins would probably do. A few small dishes and extra plates for putting out snacks like nuts, fruit, cheese, or candy.

I ordered one earlier, it should be arriving today. I will be bringing two of each utensil, small plates, bowls. Hadn't thought about napkins or the broom/dustpan. All great ideas.

Maybe one of those light-weight stick vacuums to keep in the closet? I ended up purchasing one to use in my craft room because it needed vacuuming every time I made something and I absolutely hated going downstairs to get the big vacuum and lug it back upstairs. I bought a small one that I could just stick in the closet of my craft room. It was nice for cleaning up any glitter and paper bits in between normal house cleaning with the big vacuum. In your situation, dragging one from the main house would be an inconvenience with having to use the outside stairs to access it.
Maybe make up a small bucket with some cleaning products in it to keep under the bathroom cabinet.
Also, this isn’t really all that necessary these days but it was very handy when my parents were staying with my younger sister on her ranch. My parents built a 3-car garage with an apartment above it on my sister’s ranch property. I bought them a small Alexa device to go with the several that my sister had. That way they could use it like an intercom to speak to my sister when she was in her shop, barn, or even in her main house so that my mom didn’t have to go down the steep back staircase to go looking for her when she needed to talk to her.
Their ranch was very remote and there was no cell phone service available out there. Teaching my elderly parents to use it was a lot of fun. Mom couldn’t seem to remember to say “Alexa” first and if she did remember, she forgot the name. It was very funny. I did write down instructions for her to make it easier on her. Anyway, if your daughter already has an Alexa device, you might want to bring a little one to set up like an intercom so you can talk back and forth easily. Again, not a necessity since you could just call on your cell, but handy to have if you both already own them.
