I want to serve shrimp cocktail for a Thanksgiving appetizer but my to-do list is too long. Can I buy the shrimp pre-cooked from the store? What store has the best pre-cooked shrimp for shrimp cocktail? Is it all the same from any grocery store? TIA!

Definitely precooked. I find Costco's shrimp to be really good.

That's why they're there in the supermarket isn't it?

Definitely pre-cooked shrimp! Most of our grocery stores have it, but we live along the Gulf Coast so it's pretty common. Costco is good if you need a larger quantity. For just DH and I on a weekend I grab some at HEB or Central Market.

I get mine at Fresh Market, pre-cooked. I even use that when I "cook" shrimp, just some olive oil, garlic, quick toss to heat, brown and it's done!

Pre-cooked is OK. Good quality shrimp cooked correctly at home FANTASTIC! I understand the time constraints. Sometimes it is so much easier to just buy them done If you have access to a fish market, I could only imagine they would be top notch. I only have Walmart and a Grocery chain, and their shrimp are limp and rubbery, especially the ones that come arranged as a Shrimp Cocktail platter. Oh... avoid those at all cost! Blech. The come frozen, and if they have them out - they have been defrosted and have been frozen at one time... I think that contributes to their condition. The pre-cooked ones in the seafood counter on ice are quite a bit better than the pre-made cocktail platter.

We always buy our shrimp, frozen, at Walmart.

Precooked. Costco. Shoot, they even have a couple of precooked shrimp items in their prepared foods. One is cilantro lime (i think) and the other I believe is shrimp cocktail

I buy shrimp cocktail 2-3 times per year when the platters are BOGO at Publix, and they are always good. The shrimp is pre-cooked.

I wouldn't even consider cooking my own prawns for a prawn cocktail. For most other prawn dishes I always cook my own, but never for things like a prawn cocktail.
(Sorry, I can't bring myself to call them shrimp haha!)

Apropos of not much: We have a saying here "Don't come the raw prawn with me!" which means "don't try to fool me".

I notice in fine dining restaurants they often indicate prawns, maybe they source those because they are bigger. They taste the same as far as I can tell, I just looked it up and they live in different waters. Shrimp live in salt water and prawns in fresh or brackish water. So, AussieMeg yours might actually be prawn and not shrimp!

For a different twist on Shrimp Cocktail - have you ever served it with Mae Ploy, or some other chili sauce, but Mae Ploy is my favorite!

I'm going to be the one who disagrees. Pre-cooked shrimp is always wet and soggy to me. I don't like to eat it.
