What are your thoughts about pet insurance? We’ve never had it, but after losing our last two kitties to rather expensive diagnoses, we’re considering it for our next.

Last year we got a puppy and we decided to insure her through Fetch. An acquaintance had something happen to their very young dog that was incredibly expensive to deal with. We decided that it would be worth it just to avoid having to make decisions like they did. It helps take a lot of the guess work out of whether or not you should bring your pet in. In the less than a year that we’ve had our dog it has paid for itself. She had some tummy issues when she was really little and some allergy irritations.

We have pet insurance through Nationwide that we got when our dog at 8 weeks (he’s now almost 3). It’s a great policy, including wellness care, and only $110/mo. Considering he’s a giant breed that’s prone to a number of health issues (which aren’t excluding in his policy), that’s a shockingly good deal. We haven’t had any emergencies but it covered his neutering, vaccines, flea meds, etc. so has probably paid for itself anyway. Our deductible is only $250/yr. We’ve had no issues with timely payments - i submit the paperwork and two days later, the reimbursement is ACHed into our bank account.
I’m not sure if they offer the same/similar policy now but I’m extremely happy with ours.

I don’t think I would have a pet now without having insurance. When my dog was 6, he became seriously unwell (turned out to be inflammatory bowel disease) and spent a week in hospital. That week cost us £6000, and although the policy we had only covered the first £4k, that deficit was manageable. He was also quite a nervous boy who hated going to the vet's, and had to be sedated for anything more than a single injection. He was prone to ear infections, and having the insurance meant that his ears could be cleaned out and treated under sedation which would have been a struggle to afford otherwise.

My last dog didn't cost me anything beyond his yearly checkup so I really didn't give pet insurance a second thought when we got our pup two years ago.
We are regretting that decision big time as he has just been diagnosed with blastomycosis and it has cost us $8000 so far. We are looking at $750 in meds for at least the next six months.

I’ve had it since my 2 were puppies. I don’t think I’d go without unless I was SUPER diligent about putting money away monthly to cover vet expenses.

Thanks so much. I like to think we’d be diligent about putting away money, but . . . Pet insurance, it is.
