My son is living there, and he drew my sister's name for Christmas. She wants something that represents South Dakota. She really likes pottery, metal yard art, maybe even jewelry. I told DS I would help him find something, but I am having trouble. Any ideas on where to look? Thanks!

Not a South Dakota person so I can’t help you there, so sorry. But ‘‘tis the season for craft shows. He should see if there is one near him. I am a pottery lover (usually my preferred take home keepsake from places I visit) and we have a lot of amazing local pottery at most of our craft shows. Hopefully some Dakota peas can give you some good suggestions. Good Luck with your quest.

I'm not sure how popular it is any more, but Black Hills Gold jewelry used to be a thing when I was growing up.

If he has a Nextdoor web site for his area he could post a question there. The local people would probably have a lot of suggestions.

What part of South Dakota? If he’s anywhere near the south central part of the state, there’s an awesome scrapbook store named The Hobby Shoppe in Winner SD that also has a lot of really neat upcycled yard art things. I wish I lived closer, it’s a great store! You can see some of what she sells in photos on Facebook.

My dad is from SoDak and Black Hills gold is very unique, it's tri-color (yellow, green and rose gold) and often a grapevine motif (not sure why). maybe a small pair of earrings? I just saw this from this website: jewelryblackhillsgold.com/blogs/news/legend-of-black-hills-gold#:~:text=After%20he%20woke%20up%2C%20he,wear%20Black%20Hills%20Gold%20Jewelry. During the California gold rush in 1870 Henri Labeau, a French goldsmith, got lost in the Black Hills of South Dakota. While struggling with dehydration and starvation he had fallen asleep, and had a dream he seen a mountain stream with grape vines growing on the banks. After he woke up, he walked over a rise and found the stream and grape vines just like he had dreamt. Out of gratitude he dedicated his life to creating jewelry in the shape of grape clusters and leaves styled in rose, green, and yellow gold. “Legend has it; good luck comes to all who wear Black Hills Gold Jewelry." I had no idea!

SD is a pretty wide state, so it's going to be completely different from area to area. Where he is at, is more prairie, vs the blackhills over on the opposite border. There is a great museum in Watertown SD from the artist Terry Redlin. He used to be very popular in that area. Otherwise I would have him hit up local museums, art shows in Souix Falls.

Terry Redlin art work is used on so so many puzzels if you are interested in checking out his look. He is one of my Dad’s favorite for puzzle pictures. This is the first time I have heard about him, other than looking for his puzzles, and was like wow I know that name/artist. 😄

I might be too late, but I love this gal's work. Her work is wonderful and showcases the beauty of SD. She uses actual flowers and elements that are part of our SD landscape. She has a website and sells her creations on Etsy as well. Etsy Shopwebsite

One of her posts popped up on Facebook this morning and I immediately thought of your post here. Such a great representation of SD and it's prairie. Merry Christmas!
