I know the year isn't over yet...
I like (and use) things more if they are stored vertically. File folders have become my new besties because I discovered I do not like storing thing in large Zipper bags. They slide all over the place and fall off my desk, behind my desk, under the other things in my scrap space. The moment I make a page kit and put it in a zipper type bag, whatever it was would be erased from my memory, and since I didn't see it in my photo pile, I must have scrapped it already... nope.
What about you, did you learn anything about yourself craftwise this year?

I prefer to scrap with a solid plan. I knew this about myself but it really hit home for me this year. I need to scraplift a page I’m excited about or work from a class kit (like CTMH kits or a class from an event) or I’m just not very productive. I spend a lot of time pushing papers around and not actually creating otherwise. And I’m more likely to leave it and not come back for days (or longer). But when I have a kit with instructions, it’s such a perfect jumping off point for me. I rarely follow the instructions exactly and often veer off to use more embellishments from my stash and things. But it gets me started! And that’s half of my battle.

When it comes to papers and embellishments I work better when everything is stored together. Even if I end up combining collections, overall I tend to think of things as parts of a collection and then will know where to go and look for the piece of whatever I am thinking of. Disorganization leads to more shopping for me and re-purchasing items I already have.
I also like vertical storage. After years of having things in paper trays, switching to keeping things in vertical paper holders or vertically on a shelf has been much more successful. I still group things together in zip top bags, but this makes it easier for me to pull out what I am looking for and go through it.

i learned: -i still enjoy crafting -my to-do list exceeds the time i have to execute them -shopping is as much part of the hobby as the actual crafting -lots of time is wasted organizing instead of actually crafting -i have enough supplies for a lifetime -i need to get started earlier than i think

I learned that I can no longer do heavy (in regards to the weight of things). My beloved file carts, which held a lot of of 13 x 13 plastic envelopes filled with products, became too heavy to roll around, because of my neck-back-shoulder arthritis. I got rid of them, and replaced them with a lighter weight storage that is easier for me to manage. Takes up more room, but it's better for my neck and back. Through my scrapbooks and photographs, I realize I have lived my life. Sometimes, especially the last several years....I feel like I haven't "done much in my life" compared to others. A walk down memory lane (my scrapbooks), I realize I have done so much....just the years go by, memories fade, etc.... An afternoon of looking through all my scrapbooks....... reminds me of the things I've done, the places I've been, the memories I've made, the things I've experienced, etc.. More than some, less than others. I didn't learn it, I already knew it. I am a photographs printed procrastinator.

I learnt: -I still love scrapbooking -I need to buy embellishments that coordinate with my Christmas PP -I like sketches and sketch challenges but I don't mixed media type challenges (this quarter has a lot) -finishing albums gives a good sense of accomplishment -the layouts that are left in an almost finished album are never the fun photos to scrap -I don't stamp or die cut nearly as often as my stash would imply -I need to re-evaluate WHAT I expect to scrap as photos come in WAY faster than even I can scrap them, lol

My scrap room used to be two steps across the hallway from my bedroom. Now it is two full flights of stairs and the other end of the house away. While I don't mind the steps and do like the extra exercise, I find it not being in my eyesight all day keeps me from crafting sometimes.

I discovered I do not enjoy scrapping in any size aside from 12 x 12, and I get bored scrapping too many photos from the same event. I learnt this when I did a 9 x12 album of my daughter's 21st birthday party. I put it off for 4 years but I persevered and got it done.

I learned I love having all my stuff in one place. I finally have a dedicated scrapping area.
I'm learning to create more pages about things I love. I have an 8x8 album dedicated to that.
I've learned I have zero willpower to not buy more supplies.

I’ve learned that while I love PL, keeping up with it doesn’t allow me the time or space (mental space mostly) to play with other projects.

I learned I'm not a fan of 6x8 scrapping. Working on one for my DD's anniversary trip and having a hard time with both the full pages and the divided ones.

The freezer idea sounds like a good idea in a theory. I realize that when I'm denying myself from scrappy shopping pleasures, I ended spending more (especially when I'm with my 2 scrappy pals...one is here, you know who you are!). Now I buy what I love with no guilt with the idea that my room can't hold much more.

I think I've learned that I don't really care for divided pocket pages. When I moved away from CM, I started buying pocket pages in all sizes. I like the flexibility of the ring binders, but the divided pockets are a pain for me. When I complete a page, the back page has a configuration that may or may not match my pictures. I also find that the cards and photos fall out. Going forward, I'm going to purchase full-size page protectors.

As much as I like to collect them, I am not a PL scrapper. On full pages I like to coordinate the paper with at least one color in the picture and with pocket cards it seems harder to do. I am going to detash at least half of my cards. I just need to get braver about doing it.

Buying what I love with no guilt is actually a whole new concept! Why is it we feel so much guilt over treating ourselves in a hobby we love?

I've grown more frustrated with the stereotypical feminine & floral domination of the industry regardless brand or theme (& the few exceptions often having an odd yellow-dominate color palette that is equally unusable for me). Hoping the industry gets out of its feminine/floral rut for 2024...

I also like vertical storage. After years of having things in paper trays, switching to keeping things in vertical paper holders or vertically on a shelf has been much more successful. I went the other way this year and learned that horizontal paper trays in my kallax are my ideal for finding what I need. It was a game changer and I wish I could afford to turn more cubes into horizontal paper trays (but they are pricey!) I learned that the more I have, the less "precious" I am with supplies. I learned that I love telling the story as much as the art of our hobby, so I get more pleasure out of scrapping a whole "chapter"/series of stories than skipping around. When I scrap a "chapter" (like, 5-20 pages, for example, camping 2023) I use my stash more effectively because each page I do I discover stash that will compliment this chapter and then it stays out while I keep making pages.

I am fine with hot pink in my summer layouts, but this overly girly pink that is on almost every paper makes me skip the line or even the manufacturer. They make what sells though, so I don't think it will change. I am trying to find baby lines that don't have pink. Most of them do or they are the boy lines (that I do like), but the sayings don't work at all.

What I have learned in 2023:
I have a lot of stuff! Packing, moving, unpacking . . . ! Deciding what craft supplies are worthy of residing in the craft/guest room wasn't as hard as I thought. Having the luxury of purchasing Create Room Dream Box 2, Dream Cart, and cubbies has helped in the re-organization of my stash! I still really enjoy scrapbooking and card making. That pocket pages are a good way to scrap a huge number of photos for a certain event where you just can't par down to a 2 pager. An opening/closing page traditional then adding the pocket pages is a game changer for our Hawaii album.
I am glad I had a project that was mid-way when I moved. All the papers, embellishments, etc are still together and I can move on and work on that project. Other mostly finished projects are next, from last summer when we traveled between our home in Oregon and our cabin in Minnesota. Having gone through most of my stash, I realize that I didn't want to buy over Black Friday except the stamp wheel!
I miss being at online crops with my 2peas besties!

A vicious cycle: Stereotypically feminine & floral is "what sells" because it's often the only product available for customers to purchase! Non-pink-dominant baby collections: Echo Park - Our Baby, which coordinates with both EP - Our Baby Girl & EP - Our Baby Boy Simple Stories - Boho BabyPhotoplay - Little One (ETA: still some available at SB.com, ACOT, etc.) ETA: 950nancy - see also the upcoming/January release EP - Special Delivery: Baby that coordinates with Baby Boy & Baby Girl (linked & discussed HERE)

I also found some cute papers from Ciao Bella (Italian line) and lots of cute woodland lines that are more baby-ish. Thankfully the baby's mom doesn't like pink either.

I learned: …I still love making mini albums. I created four 6x8 albums for out trips this year and I love them all
…I have to purge in order to enjoy my space and the products that I love. Im currently inundated by things Ive purchased and no longer want/need. They are going in 2024 so I can reclaim my space
…I am a simple scrapper. I like clean designs with a minimum of embellishments. Im learning to cluster but it will never be extreme.
…Im glad I have held on to products that I love — my stash is extensive and I like having what I need at hand. During the Pandemic, I didnt run out or need a single scrappy product and I never run out of adhesive/ cardstock or anything. I can out together a card or quick mini in a moments notice with items I have on hand
…Scrapbooking / Memory Keeping is a constant in my life. My oldest scrapbook is from 1985. So Ive been recording memories for almost 40 years. When my Dad passed away, we buried him with a mini album of our family I made for him in in final months.
Products and techniques have changed but PHOTOS and notes/journaling are my cornerstones.

I guess I learned everything about my crafty self in 2023: I reentered the hobby around April of 2022. I got my Platinum 6 and Stamparatus for Christmas of that year.
I just need to figure out how to articulate all the things I learned!

Top Ten Things I Learned about My Crafty Self in 2023:
Techniques 10. I am getting better at ink blending and can see why it's a worthwhile technique, but I will never love it. 9. Layering itty bitty die cuts was not as intimidating as I feared. 8. I LOVE to color and have enjoyed getting to know alcohol markers, watercolor pencils & markers, and Prismacolor. Storage 7. I don't need to see everything in my stash to remember that it's there. 6. Mostly. Patterned paper packs and pads seem to be the exception. Need to work on that in 2024. Style 5. It was easier and faster to find my style than I expected it to be. 4. I am very inspired by nature and can't stand red holly berries, pink butterflies, blue sunflowers, etc. 3. While card making is seasonal for obvious reasons, my crafting is even more seasonal (probably due to the above). Miscellaneous 2. For cardmaking, buy patterned paper and ephemera packs together. One or the other on clearance is not helpful! 1. Most of these things I learned with the help of my fellow Peas -- thank you all so much!!

I scrap faster and I'm happier with my layouts when I use a collection instead of using bits and pieces of various collections. It takes too much time to hunt for things that will work together.

Pocket scrapping makes me frustrated, and using 12x12 pp size makes me so happy. I’ll continue PL in 2024 but won’t feel the need to incorporate pocket pages at the beginning of each month. I may even organize into 4 seasons so I’m not tied to 12 months.
