I read on Endgadget that starting on Dec 4th, EN free version will be limited to one notebook and 50 notes. I've been seeing rumblings of the prices for the paid version are increasing but didn't know about the free version changes until today. I've been checking out other note apps recently (premonition maybe?) and I've settled on OneNote. I use MS Office so I already have it. You can insert a photo, add tags and search. So on the next rainy day I'll be entering stuff in. Or as I use a product enter it. *** Helpful hints for OneNote Within each Notebook you can have multiple sections (think the tabs in a binder). So my notebook is called Inventory and some sections I created are Stamps, Shape Dies, Background Stamps, Christmas, Other Holiday, etc. (to change the title of the section just right click on it) to Insert an Image - Insert, Pictures, Online Pictures, then type in the company name and set title (Lawn Fawn Year Seven), then uncheck the Creative Commons Only box. Click on the photo of the product, then click insert. To tag an item - under the inserted photo I just added the words of everything in the set - Pinata, hope your, birthday, is a, smash, candy The search bar will search through all sections in the notebook, so you can have still have separate tabs for each thing like stamps, shape dies, Christmas, etc.

I’m going to migrate from the paid Evernote to Bear App (only for Macs) this year. The ridiculous Evernote price increase had me cancelling but when I put in the cancellation they basically gave me the old price with a $5 increase I think. I renewed because I felt like it would give me enough time to get comfy with Bear.

You're lucky that with the paid version you can export and then import into your new app. Hopefully Bear will accept the EN file type. I was thinking of paying for a month, exporting then cancelling. But that seemed like a hassle because I'd need to download a third party program...yada, yada, yada. Plus with entering it all manually I can see if there is anything to get rid of. I knew you, pinklady , used EN and I think there are a few others.

GiantsFan I have tested exporting EN and importing to Bear. It’s was super easy and smooth. If you have a Mac I totally recommend it. Paying for EN for a month to export is a brilliant idea. I never would have thought of that.

So I currently have 8 notebooks and over 900 notes for my scrapbook supplies. It says online any Free user who currently has more than fifty notes and one notebook will still be able to view, edit, export, share, and delete existing notes and notebooks.
But then it says Going forward, new and existing Free users will have a maximum of fifty notes and one notebook per account.
Does that mean I'll only be able to add an additional 50 notes if I keep the free version? The paid versions are pretty pricey...ugh I don't really want to have to change to a new app but now I guess I'm going to start looking into new ones.

I took this to mean that you could keep your existing notes, but couldn't add more. After reading this from the EN site I'm not so sure. One person on Reddit suggested creating fake notes now and hoping to be grandfathered in on Dec 4th. I think the free version as we knew and loved is gone. I have 15 notebooks and 550 or so notes.

Oh, and I'm sorry I brought this kerfuffle up to the EN 2Peas users. I was just hoping someone would see it and be able to export or screen shot or whatever.

Oh, that's good to know! I haven't seen any emails or anything from Evernote. I have no idea what I have, I don't use it for scrappy inventory stuff, but thanks for giving me the heads-up that I should check.

It's good to alert others so they're not blindsided - this is the first I've heard of the planned changes to free accounts. I'd been considering EverNote as an option but definitely won't waste my time on them now. 50 notes is laughably little. Bear looked attractive too but it's another "service" that doesn't need to be a monthly payment. I'd rather own my software outright and know that my data isn't going to get locked up in some proprietary format, potentially held hostage.
Super scummy if EverNote is changing with no clear warning to users.

Wow! I didn't know any of this. I've been using the free version for a few years, and I was never notified. Thanks so much for the heads-up!
ETA From what I read on the Evernote site, it doesn't look like existing users will be able to have >50 notes. It says that users who have/need more than that should "consider a paid subscription." Time for me to move on to another service.

I think what people forget is that while disc space is not as pricey as it used to be, when you have millions of free users taking up space, that adds up. Yes, it sucks that you either have to start paying for the service that you got for free for years and years or you have to find a new way to store your data. These businesses are in it for the bottom line (making a profit) not to give away their product for free.

As of tomorrow, I might be losing my entire crafting inventory. It's not the end of the world, but it could have been avoided. Plus $14.99/mo. (even though it's on sale right now) is too much money to pay for this type of service - for me, anyway. I pay for extra iCloud and Google storage, so a few dollars a month for something like Evernote wouldn't be a big deal for me.

I went through a bunch of my notes and boy, I had saved some really dumb and irrelevant things, and things that were only relevant in 2017. I used to use the web clipper a lot but stopped after they limited how many different devices you could access notes with. I had a lot of stuff I had completely forgotten about and other important stuff I probably wouldn't have known to look for there. A lot of clutter. Even after spending quite a bit of time deleting things and navigating around the site I didn't get any notices talking about the changes or anything. Just a button offering an upgrade in the lower corner and one pop-up promising a $0 offer that wouldn't be offered again, but was. Nothing looks different. I have tons of notes in 3 different notebooks and I seem to be able to access them all. More than 700 notes, it turns out! oops. So like jediannie said, that adds up a lot of memory being taken up by a lot of freeloaders...

I have no issue with businesses charging for services - that's their right, just as it's the individual's right to pick if they want to pay or leave for greener pastures. Where I do balk is offering a free service and then suddenly without warning making it 15$ a month(!?! that's a whole streaming service subscription!) or you can't get your data downloaded / migrated and are severely restricted in use. The kind of data storage Evernotes should take up is minuscule at the prices a large corporation would be purchasing server space in. Consider how much data it takes to deliver one 1080p YouTube video, which is paid for by ad revenue.
It's a cash grab and nothing more, especially when competing services are pricing themselves at 3$ or less.

Or give me the option to purchase the app and keep my data local. $15 a year? I'd pay that. But for what I use $15 a month is not worth it.

First of all, thanks to GiantsFan for starting this thread, I didn't even know this was happening with Evernote. I've always been a free user. What I read on their site was that as a company, they've promised not to delete data, so if you were an existing user with more than 1 notebook/50 notes, your data won't be deleted but you can't add to it (in terms of notes/notebooks). However, I am always scared of losing my stuff so I decided to move a lot of my data (lists and such) to OneNote and consolidate my existing notebooks/notes in Evernote (leaving extra empty notes/notebooks instead of deleting). Interestingly, when I was doing this today, I unthinkingly hit "add a note" (instead of editing an existing one) and it still created a new note even though I'm way above 50 notes. Has anyone else tried adding a note as a free user today? Did it work for you? It's probably just a glitch but I was still surprised.

wendifful I was able to add a note today. Interesting! I'm still going to switch over to OneNote. I like that I can have my data on my PC and not be at the mercy of a software company. Plus I don't have to worry that Microsoft is going to pull the plug on ON. And if they do, I own the software (MS Office Home package). Just doing a few here and there, I've already got 130 (out of 523) entered. Plus as I flip through I'm pulling stuff I no longer use.
