After almost a year of fighting cancer, our blue heeler, Ellie, took a downward turn yesterday and we made the difficult decision to end her pain. She was a rescue dog, dropped off at the SPCA when a couple got divorced and neither of them wanted her. We adopted her at age two. She had been poorly trained and socialized - clearly these people saw a cute puppy at some point and had no idea of the needs and temperament of its breed. Some of her issues we were able to improve with time, love, and training. Some we could never overcome. DH says she was the best dog she knew how to be - that’s just not a very good dog. 😂 She was frantic and fearless (except for the vacuum) and loved our family with all the strength of her little doggie heart. And we loved her. Run free, sweet girl. I hear the Rainbow Bridge is filled with tennis balls and nobody minds how much you bork.

💔 I'm so sorry about Ellie. Losing the pets is just so difficult. It sounds like you really gave her the best life possible considering her rough start in life.

Big hugs to you. Our 13yo GSD will be heading to the bridge later this morning (I'm just peaing now because he seems agitated by all the extra attention he's getting) and it's breaking our hearts, even though we know it's time.

I’m so sorry. Losing pets is the worst, but at least we get to love them—and be loved by them.

Aw I smiled at your DH's description "she was the best dog she knew how to be"; I think that's a great epitaph. I'm sorry you've lost your furry friend.

Thanks all. Our hearts are heavy this weekend.
I worry about an influx of heelers in the shelters with the popularity of Bluey. These are not necessarily the best dogs for families with young kids. They require a great deal of time, exercise, and training to be the very good dogs they can be. Their herding instinct is strong and they will sometimes herd children! Without consistent training and a job to do, they can be destructive and even aggressive, and dogs with those traits are often abandoned at shelters or simply dumped. With consistent training and a job, they can be excellent, well-behaved dogs, but they may never be particularly gentle or patient with kids.
They are, of course, the cutest puppies in the world. But if you know any families thinking of adopting a heeler (AKA Australian Cattle Dog) because of Bluey, please urge them to research the breed carefully and be sure they’re ready for the commitment. They are probably not good for first time dog-owners, either.

((HUGS))
I wish all who adopt puppies (and kittens) were well aware of the needs of these animals and that they have the time and patience to devote to them. I hate when people say they can't keep an animal anymore - it's so traumatic for the animals.

I am so sorry. Those furry little creatures wiggle into our hearts and stay forever. She's was beautiful.
We had a heeler mix. It was my YDS's. I always told her she had to hang on until he made it home. He's a sailor. He was home at Christmas and we helped her over the bridge in January.
Big hugs to you and your family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I love your story and your husbands outlook for her - what a perfect statement "being the best dog she could be". (We have a puppy mill rescue who fits that statement). What a beautiful life you gave her.
