We had our sweet girl euthanized two years ago and I still miss her. That Rainbow Bridge is full of very good boys and very good girls.

They are, of course, the cutest puppies in the world. But if you know any families thinking of adopting a heeler (AKA Australian Cattle Dog) because of Bluey, please urge them to research the breed carefully and be sure they’re ready for the commitment. They are probably not good for first time dog-owners, either. I often wonder if the scriptwriters for media research the dog/animal that will be the dominant character in the show. They must be aware of the sudden popularity that the breed will have. Examples of Lassie, Beethoven, and more are examples of how the media has influenced people to become pet owners of that particular breed that is shown. Golden retrievers became popular after a few movies that had one as the lead character. Going way way back to the historic years of early TV and the show " Please Don't Eat the Daisies", had an Old English Sheepdog. This breed became very popular and Old English Sheepdogs are really not a great house dog. Their size is over-whelming for the space that they use and they are not the smartest dog either. In Canada, there is a show, Hudson & Rex, which has a German Shepherd dog as Rex. In this show, Rex is a very well trained dog and there is a consistent showing of commands that the dog follows as well as the nuances that this breed has. The small purse dogs that were popular in some shows awhile ago also saw an uptick of being popular. I'm sorry for the loss of Ellie and I really like your DH's comment, as it is so true.

I remember there being an upswing in Dalmatians ending up in shelters after 101 Dalmatians came out. People didn’t realize they can be pretty high-strung. They just saw a cute puppy.

I loved what you wrote about her. I loved it a LOT. I know personally what is involved in rescuing a dog that has not been loved and who has so many issues. I know the work involved in making that dog understand it is loved and it is safe. And never giving up on it. All I can say to you is God bless you for your big hearts and may your tribe increase.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beautiful pup. Our Max was an Australian shepherd and had a similar background and personality to your Ellie. Your dh's "...the best dog she knew how to be" made me tear up. That describes our Max to a T.

So sorry about Ellie. We have a rescue Blue Heeler too. To go along with our German Shorthair Pointer lol. Jax our Heeler was very well trained but he is very needy and food motivated. He will get into anything that has a hint of food smell on it. He just wants to be with us all.the.time. We do have to watch him around little kids, he likes to nip and herd them when they run around. He’s been a great dog though overall. I hope all her memories bring you joy.

I loved what your husband said about her being the best dog she knew how to be. That so fits our rescued Heeler mix. He came from a hoarder situation and while we have trained him out of some of his bad habits, others will remain forever. We aren’t sure his age, we think around 10, and we’ve had him for about 7 years.
He isn’t the best behaved dog but he loves his people endlessly and we love him too. When it’s his time to go to the rainbow bridge, we will miss him terribly but will definitely not miss his barking.
