Back in April my trusty 2012 MacBook Pro hard drive died. I bought another computer because it was old and I needed to think about a new one anyway.
Today I finally go around to calling the data recovery that was recommended by Apple and the first place I took it but they weren't able to do anything for me.
ECONOMY turn around (10-14 days) is in the range of $700-$3900 with MOST jobs falling in the TOP half of that price range. They will call me with a firm price once they get the drive.
Do yourself a favor and back that shit up! I haven't and now I have to decide when they give me the cost if it's worth it to me.

You might try Best Buy. I had a computer die. The put all my data on a portable hard drive. It was about $200 with the hard drive.

What in the ever-loving-hell! I swear Apple thinks they are gold. No way should it cost that much! I would try an independent tech to see what they can recover. If your hard drive isn't toast, it shouldn't be that difficult! If it is toast - well.. it's toast. I have removed hard drives from my PC's and recovering data was pretty simple. Your advice to backup is spot on though! It's something I try to keep done, but it is easy to slip on it. Thanks for the reminder!

I started at Apple and they said they couldn't do anything because the HD failed. Best Buy refused to touch my MacBook- something about not working on Apple computers? LOL Geek Squad took one look at the computer and said they couldn't help me. I went to a local place that I had been to before and they pulled the drive out and supposedly sent it to some company but they never did anything with it so the local place got it back and called me to come and get it- no charge. Apple gave me the number for Disc Savers and so did the local place so I figured I'd give them a call. Finally got around to it today. Le sigh.

This is NOT Apple that I am sending it to. Apple told me they couldn't help me. My hard drive is TOAST. It was clicking for a few months and I figured it was just the fan since the computer is 10 years old. Nope, that was the HD. Thankfully it's already out of the computer so the job time will be shortened a bit. Doesn't mean it's going to save any $ tho. LOL
