This guy Tom Nichols on trump supporters. Agree, disagree, or agree somewhat?
“I know it's obvious that Trump changes positions on a dime and how it's mystifying that his cult doesn't care, but picking all this apart is a fool's errand. They stick with him because he channels their diffuse anger about their lives at other Americans. But it's worse now:” /1
After 2016, Trump voters thought they'd really made their point, pushed back change in America, and gained respect by electing a POTUS. All that blew up in their faces: They found out they're not a majority, and worse, the disdain of their fellow citizens only intensified. /2
2020 and J6 compounded their sense of humiliation and grievance. The know Trump is making fools of them, but they will never admit it. And Biden winning was like a national slap in the face. So now they're with him no matter what. They don't care about policy or positions. /3
“And this time, they'll support him as he does even more desperate and hideous things. He could call for open borders and free abortions and most of them wouldn't care. All they care about is that he's promising to go after people they hate even more now than in 2016.” /4
“Talking about how he and Biden "differ on Issues X/Y/Z" is pointless and a distraction. It's all part of the "normal political horse race" narrative that is blinding people to the danger ahead./5x”

This comment… ”Thanks. I was wasn’t totally depressed until just now.” Prompted this from Nichols… ”sorry ”

My friend's husband is just like this. It is just beyond me how he thinks.
Many of my other friends who all backed him in 2016 and posted almost daily about him no longer post a thing politically. Some have changed political affiliations, but most refuse to vote for him and think the conservatives have made a poor decision.

What gets me is some of the things he ran on that Biden has now done is bad. Like bringing down drug prices for those on Medicare, infrastructure and bringing back manufacturing just to name a few. They were all for bringing it back and then he failed and one of the big plants was only 1/4 the size and I think more jobs landed in Canada for the one he was really pushing. Then we never heard more about bringing manufacturing back.
Bridges are now bad and just trying to buy votes 🤦♀️ this country needs to put more money into things like this. It doesn’t matter who is in the White House. A lot of our infrastructure is old and in need of repairs or updating for safety But since it didn’t happen in the previous and is happening now it’s all of a sudden bad and just trying to buy votes.
I honestly think that a lot that vote for him don’t pay any attention to what he’s doing. Many just know what he said in 2016 and think he is still the same. Others obviously only care that he is a Republican I know people like that and just could never consider voting for a Democrat.

I would bet if they haven’t changed affiliations then they will vote for him in 2024 thinking well he will just be the same as last time not realizing how much he has changed and that now all he cares about is revenge and staying in power. I laugh that he is promising that if he is re-elected you will be able to buy a nice house and a new car any kind of car - I’m assuming he means gas vs electric. He didn’t help the middle class and certainly not the lower class when he was in office but he is saying he will this time - wake up.

I’ve said this many times already and I’ll keep saying it. This was not an accident. This was intentional. The people (white men) that hold the power in this country (and beyond) purposely divide us to keep our attention off of them. They keep us blaming each other for our woes…the immigrants, the gays, the trans, the libtards. They are destroying public education so people won’t think for themselves. They want to keep women uneducated, pregnant and obedient. They keep us working till we collapse just to survive so we won’t have the energy to band together and truly put up a fight. They are trying everything they can to control the media so they can poison the weak-minded. Trump was the perfect conduit for them. He is just a pawn. But they lost control of him. He’s really stupid. He keeps saying the quiet part out loud. He started going rogue. I don’t think they ever imagined how loyal his followers would be. Or exactly how far he would go. And know they don’t know what to do. I think they were hoping they’d all switch to DeSantis. I know I sound crazy— like I need a foil cap. But I seriously think there’s some President-Snow shit happening these days. So, yes, I agree. And I think it’s gone even further than the people who planned it ever intended.

I think he initially kind of got goaded into running and didn’t really intend to but then he liked the attention and couldn’t back out. I really expected him to quit after a few months. I can see your thinking. They thought they had a yes man and then he went rogue and then it became cult like with his followers. I mean seriously when had any other politician had rallies to the extent he did.

I hate to speak poorly of my dad who just died recently, but I can almost guarantee you that he liked Trump because he felt better about his own racist, negative views. He often said things like, "Trump is popular because he doesn't put up with any of that political correctness bullsh!t." Yes, my dad was racist. He pretty much voted Democrat most of his life. Until Obama. I have zero doubt he didn't vote for Obama simply because he is black. He was absolutely sure that Obama was the anti-Christ who was going to do something awful so he could never leave office. Yeah.

Humans tend to buy into the sunk cost fallacy, regardless of politics. Look at how many people date trash people then marry them or procreate with them. They know they're trash from the get-go and when it all goes tits up they say, yeah I saw the signs but I'd been with them so long ...
(Full disclosure is I am certainly human too and have fallen into my own sunk cost fallacies in my own life.)
In for a penny, in for a pound.

It doesn’t sound crazy at all. From what I have read, much of the political class loathes Trump, and many were hoping that he would disappear, be convicted, or expire. And I have read that bit multiple times; I believe it. They did think that he would be a useful idiot, but did not count on his base. And now they are stuck. Deservedly so.

I don’t think THEY think they’re in the minority, or that everything blew up in their faces. And I truly don’t think that they think Trump is making fools of them. I’ve been heavily involved in local politics since 2020, and the Trump supporters I’ve come across are smug and over-confident, continuing political ideologies made popular by Trump.

I don’t think THEY think they’re in the minority, or that everything blew up in their faces. No, the delusion that they’re a majority is necessary to feed the stolen election lie.

All I can say is that I’m completely baffled by how completely and totally so many of his followers have jumped on that bandwagon and are hanging on for dear life, my own sister included. I really can’t understand how someone like my sister who supposedly lives and dies by the Bible can have so little regard for their fellow humans.
