My daughter is doing her BEd so I’d like to get her some practical/useful/fun items for teacher/classroom related things. Her father and I were both teachers but left for different careers long ago so not really up on what elementary school teachers would like these days.
I know there are plenty of teachers here so appreciate your input.
Thanks!

I was subbing in a classroom where the teacher had a little handheld doorbell that she rang when she wanted to quiet her class quickly. My daughter is an education major and she is getting a big set of flair markers from me. When I sub I notice that all the female teachers have them. I had a young colleague who had all sorts of fun earrings - holiday related, dinosaurs, kittens, etc. There are so many fun teacher tees and sweatshirts. It’s nice to have a collection.

I am about to retire from teaching and just the other day I gave my 24 year old daughter (who is a first year teacher) all of my supplies ... much of it was new because this retirement was not planned ... She is most excited to have a good stapler, a good hole punch, whiteboard markers, lots of presharpened pencils, regular Sharpies and fine Sharpies, pencil crayons, rulers, scissors, duotangs, binders, looseleaf paper, a laminated world map and a laminated map of Canada, paper clips, post it notes ... and her favourite thing is a large wooded letter "C" that sat on my desk (our last name begins with "C") ... I guess some schools supply all of this stuff but ours really don't ... teachers here spend a lot of money throughout the year unfortunately ... I'm glad I could help her out!

My niece is a first year 3rd grade teacher this year. For her graduation in May, we gifted her a nice leather Coach tote with sections similar to this one. She had wanted a tote and was thrilled to have one to start her initial meetings with. A good tote will work for any grade level as well. Once she had her class assignment she started an Amazon wish list. During the Amazon Prime sale I was able to get the folding wagon and the laminator on her list.

Things I use and love: A bell 🛎️-mine is a swirly rainbow design and it is used multiple times a day Quiet stapler- amzn.to/3GylI95Everyone that uses it stalks about how good it is! Super quiet and easy on the hands Good lightweight Teflon or coated scissors If she is teaching primary Mr. Sketch markers (I use them for all my anchor charts) Date stamper self inking This will be weird-duct tape in a pattern she likes. I used it to mark my stapler, tape, 3 hole punch, etc. so it stays on my desk

The best electric pencil sharpener money can buy. Just the other day I used the one that I had while teaching I marveled that 25 years later, it was still going strong.

Five thousand pre-sharpened Ticonderoga pencils. 😂
I love the idea of doing book showers for new teachers, to help them get their classroom library started.

Honestly... I would just get an Amazon gift card, unless she makes an Amazon wish list. Although even with an Amazon wish list there are SO many little things that a new teacher doesn't realize they need until one day they need them. lol... If you want to give an actual physical gift card then you could put it in a cute basket along with various little items... glue sticks, chocolate, binder clips, chocolate, pencils (Ticonderoga only), chocolate, paper clips, chocolate, etc.

Yes to the heavy duty stapler, sharpener, and 3 hole punch!
Also a GC to Teachers Pay Teachers.

Lots of Post It notes in different sizes and colors. Different tipped sharpies, a Scotch laminator and laminating pouches. Lot of paper clips and different size binder clips. Pencils, a pencil sharpener. Sharpie gel pens, which are wonderful! As someone mentioned, a good, heavy stapler. All of this stuff adds up, so it is nice not to buy it.
Tote bags with dividers are always good.

At one time many teachers "carried" all the extras in what looked like a milk crate with wheels and a handle. Is that still used anywhere?

At one time many teachers "carried" all the extras in what looked like a milk crate with wheels and a handle. Is that still used anywhere? I have one. It’s taller than a milk crate and was sold as a grocery cart for people who walk to the store. Ideal for when I have a lot of stuff to haul in or out.
