DH and I are heading to San Francisco for a week in January. We'd like to spend a night and two days in Sonoma (we've never been). Question: is it better to stay in Sonoma proper or in the outlying towns/neighborhoods? Which hotels have you enjoyed both in and nearby Sonoma?
Thank you!

It depends on your style - personally I like to be able to walk to the shops and restaurants- and the Sonoma square is adorable so I would stay walking distance to the square. It is quite expensive though.
For breakfast or lunch -The Girl and The Fig is excellent.

We’ve stayed at the Fairmont and it was wonderful.

I've also stayed at the Fairmont in Sonoma. It is really lovely and I highly recommend it if you can make it work.

I haven’t stayed there, but Bungalows 313 look adorable and a great location. I’ve been to the Sonoma Mission Inn many times and like it.
ETA - The Sonoma Mission Inn is also the Fairmont.

I’m late to the party, but I also recommend Sonoma Mission Inn.

I’ll be the outlier, I like the Fairmont but don’t love it. I do like the pool in the summer. I would prefer to be closer to the square. But it’s popular, and you will probably love it.
