American Film Institute has released their list of the top 10 movies for 2023. In the article claimed no picture that was not named in the top 10 list ever won an Oscar for best picture.
I personally have no interest in seeing any of these movies. I prefer good British Mysteries and Marvel/Star War movies. The only one I might watch is Barbie because of Ryan Gosling. I see a Spider-Man but I’m not a fan of animated movies or whatever they are called so it’s not something I’ll watch.
But curious to know which of this group do you think will win a boat load of awards including Best Picture at the Oscars? Or is there a film you think should be added to this list?
AFI MOTION PICTURES OF THE YEAR
AMERICAN FICTION
BARBIE
THE HOLDOVERS
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON
MAESTRO
MAY DECEMBER
OPPENHEIMER
PAST LIVES
POOR THINGS
SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE

I haven't seen any of these. But based on titles, trailers and the buzz about them, I would say these are the Oscar contenders:
Killers of the Flower Moon Oppenheimer
My ODS has seen the Spiderman movie and keeps telling me to watch it. He really liked it. I know the Barbie movie was some sort of breakout hit but I don't know how. Again, I haven't seen it. When it is free streaming, I'll watch it. The trailer for Poor Things just looks odd. And I can't see me watching it. I also said that about The Shape of Water. I ended up liking that one.
My DD does a spreadsheet of all the movies at Oscar time. Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Actress...and we try to watch them before the show. We don't always make it. There have been some real surprises when we've done that.

I hope Killers of the Flower Moon doesn’t win a bunch - I think it’s so overrated. But I suspect it will, because of the old white dudes involved.
Oppenheimer was good and is worthy of some awards.
I loved Barbie and think it’s a legit very good movie but I think the Oscars are too snooty to give it its due.
The Spider-Man movie deserves some technical awards.

I think Oppenheimer was overrated - loved Barbie.
I think the acting in May December is excellent. I absolutely loved Charles Melton as the young husband.

I've only seen Barbie and The Holdovers. Barbie was a popular and fun movie, but I don't feel it is an Oscar worthy.
I thought The Holdovers was an excellent movie. Paul Giamatti was fantastic and I think he should be a contender for best actor. The supporting actors were also great.

i haven't seen any of these but the Academy members seem to love epic period pieces so i'll go with Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Oppenheimer is very deserving. I haven't had a chance to watch some of the movies. We do go to the movies a lot, just haven't had a chance to see some on that list. I'm surprised Into the Spiderverse is on that list. It's worthy of technical awards though.

I absolutely love Greta Gerwig and think she is brilliant. I would hope to see Barbie at the very least nominated for original screenplay, but wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot more than that.

The Holdovers was wonderful!! Engaging and warm and real, and the acting was great. I hope it wins! It was truly my kind of movie. Dh loved it too.

I hope Killers of the Flower Moon doesn’t win a bunch - I think it’s so overrated. But I suspect it will, because of the old white dudes involved. I feel like I endured Killers of the Flower Moon rather than watching it. The story is meaningful, but Scorcese managed to cram 2 hours worth of story into a 3.5-hour movie including a radio play at the end explaining what we had just been watching. Self-indulgent nonsense. I hope it wins a Razzie. It's one of those movies that wins a lot of awards because Hollywood deems it to be great art and if we don't agree, it's because the rest of us are too stoopit to understand it.

I used to be a big movie watcher but streaming tv has totally changed how and what I watch.
I thought Barbie was very original and liked Oppenheimer. I saw a commercial today for Poor Things and it looks interesting. I'll have to stream some of these before the Oscars next year.

I have only heard of four of those movies. Only saw the Barbie one. I would no way think that is an Oscar worthy movie. Fun movie but Oscar worthy? Eh??
My guess the Killers of the Flower Moon or Oppenhemier movie would be the top guesses for me. I want to see both but haven't yet. I have no clue about the rest of them.
I miss the days when I knew every single movie and had fun guessing who would win... I'm getting old.. haha

I loved Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer.
I saw May December, and I thought the acting was great, but I didn’t like the story line.
