Hi wrestler moms!
My HS wrestler son bit his tongue really badly during practice today. The whole side of his tongue looks mangled. Is there anything I can do or give him to help with the pain, clean the abrasions and help with healing?
Thanks!

Ugh!! That sounds painful. I have no idea. I'd call his doctor. Wrestling can have some doozies.

Pleanty of luke warm salt water rinses. Maybe every few hours. The tongue heals pretty quickly, so hopefully he will be healed up soon. Tongues are so full of nerves. Oh my, mine hurts reading this. I would also give him what ever over the counter pain reliever you use for him to cut the edge off the pain. I know it will hurt to eat, but would he eat some really runny hot ceral like Cream of Wheat? Not make it hot, but warm. Could put a spoon in his mouth and slowly let is slde down his troat. I think things like ice cream and popsicles would be too cold and make it hurt. So anything he does want to try and eat, only do warm. {{{Hugs}}}

I once bit through my tongue. It didnt heal evenly so a year or so later I had to have oral surgery to fix it. I seem to recall cold and lukewarm being ok, but not hot. I would go for things that dont require chewing- mashed potatoes, ice cream, pastina, etc. Unless it is bad enough to need stitches, a doctor isnt going to do anything. Also, if it has been several hours since it happened, they wont do stitches either. It is incredibly painful, but will heal quickly.

Ouch, so sorry that happened to him. Wishing him quick healing.
I would get an antiseptic oral rinse to help keep the area clean. Glycol is a common ingredient in those rinses.

He should be able to use lukewarm salt water to keep it clean. Even with the surgery, i didnt need anything more than that and Im honestly not even sure I had to do that!

Thank you for all the suggestions! I guess the injury looked WAY worse than it actually was because this morning he was feeling much better, and the tongue was looking much better. The bleeding had stopped, and while there was still some swelling, it looked much better. He was able to eat normally today. So, all is well!
Again, thank you for the suggestions and concern!
