TIL there is a game where people try to avoid hearing the song Last Christmas by Wham for as long as possible before Christmas Eve. A stadium DJ played the song at a game upsetting a lot of people BBC A football stadium DJ has apologised for playing Last Christmas by Wham!, potentially knocking more than 7,000 people out of cult game Whamageddon. Players try to avoid George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley's 1984 hit for as long as possible before Christmas Eve and are eliminated once they hear it. Matt Facer, DJ at Northampton Town, was criticised for playing it at the home game against Portsmouth on 2 December. "I never knew people took it so seriously," he said. Whamageddon started about 10 years ago, and has grown in a popularity through social media. It now has set rules, a dedicated website and merchandise. The game's rules state: "While we can't stop you from deliberately sending your friends to Whamhalla, the intention is that this is a survival game. I heard about Whamageddon here on 2 Peas last year. I think it's silly, but I guess it's just a bit of fun. I can't imagine getting upset about it though.

I can understand the sentiment of not wanting to hear Christmas songs too early but I'm not up for making a game of actively avoiding them. It's been hard to avoid Fairytale of New York recently, for an obvious reason. Thanks for the music Shane. |

Lol. The American version is with "Little Drummer Boy". There's an old "NCIS" episode that plays that song at the very end and I remember when it first aired people were mad. lol  |

I’m “playing” whamageddon and got knocked out in target yesterday. I was like “nooooooo”. Then I walked by a dad happily whistling along to the tune while his kids were singing it in the store. It was so cute. After I got to my car, I turned it on and my car hit me with it. I truly love the song so not a big deal. Just something fun. I made it to 5pm, 12/8.

It was so cute. After I got to my car, I turned it on and my car hit me with it. I truly love the song so not a big deal. Just something fun. I made it to 5pm, 12/8. I didn't even make it to December this year! I got 'whammed' on Nov 27, when I went into the Christmas Market on the first day they were open, and it was playing in one of the department stores. |

No idea if I have heard it this year or not. I do have the Christmas station on in my car. Of course now I am singing it in my head lol.

I'm still in the running. My students sing it all of the time but it has to be Wham singing it to knock you out. I understand why the people at the stadium were upset. It isn't a big deal but it definitely ruins the fun.

Last year we had Christmas music playing in the store (of course) and Christmas Eve. Little Drummer Boy came on and someone in the front of the store was like “Nooooooooo…WHYYYY?”
He made it all the way to Christmas Eve. 😅

I've never heard of this game, challenge...whatever it's called.
The work radio (staff is not allowed to change station or volume), has been playing Christmas music since before Thanksgiving.
Pretty sure I've heard every Christmas song >> multiple a times day, on the days I work.
So ready to get back to the regular music.

It's one of my favorite Christmas songs so I would never play. A friend posted on Facebook yesterday that she got knocked out in the grocery store. But she was laughing. I always thought it was just good fun.

I have played Whamageddon for a few years now - last year I managed to the 23rd. This year however, I was knocked out a week ago on Saturday, in the store I was at the time. That was December 2nd, so I lasted only two days! 😅

So strange. Here I am thinking that if I hear the beginning of the song, I would need to change the song or run out of the store, that maybe once you hear the lyrics you’re out. Apparently that is too late. I looked up the rules and it states:
The 4th Rule
You're out as soon as you recognise the song.
How on earth does anyone get beyond the first week of December?
