Looking for a yummy, easy, terrible for you appetizer idea?
I made a butter board for a last minute dinner I was invited to tonight. Just soften some good butter to room temperature. Spread it on a board (I have a pretty wooden board I use for charcuterie). I made it cute by using an offset spatula to create a scale-type pattern. Then I sprinkled on flaked salt, chopped fresh rosemary and thyme, chopped dried cranberries and chopped pecans. At the last minute, I drizzled on honey and served it with warm, sliced baguette. It was a huge hit. And I made it LAST minute with stuff I already had on hand.

Nope. I won’t do any boards like that. It’s just like a tiny buffet. No thanks.
Glad it was a hit for you, though!

I have not heard of this butter board trend. I had to Google pictures of it to see what you were referring to. I have no issue with the ingredients, but I think I will sit on the bench with littlemama regarding smearing butter on a wooden board. I have no idea why it bothers me a bit, but it does. In a shallow dish, no problem.

I remember that thread, and yes, the consensus was a big fat NOPE! I actually really like the idea, and katybee your additions to the butter sound delicious. I'd like to try it one day.

There is a literal global pandemic going on and people rightfully do not want to dip their food into communal butter. Also, the idea of smearing butter on a board grosses me out, no matter if I would be the only one eating it. I dont care what anyone else does. My hangup in thay regard is my own.

We spread. With little butter/cheese knives. Like, you put some butter on your own plate and then dipped/spread from there as you pleased. I also have several wooden serving trays/bowls. I think they’re beautiful. They’re olive wood. I serve cheese, bread, salad, etc. with them. Is there something I’m missing? I don’t serve raw meat on them…

It's like any other dip or cheese spread or hummus or whatever....we put some on our own plate and then scoop from there with whatever we're using to scoop. -- Also, I love things made from olive wood.

I am not picturing olive wood for some reason. Maybe if I saw it in person? I have a large white platter with handles on either end that matches my serving bowls. I would use that for making a butter board. Although, maybe the white color would not make the butter as appealing. I would have to cover it up with fresh herbs or something.

So in the same post you said there were “no haters” and then called it “gross.” What do you think haters are? I mean, I’m the last person who usually agrees with Cindyupnorth, but she’s 100% right - the peas tore this trend apart in the last thread.

We have done this and put down parchment paper that we precut. Also an “icing” board for desserts and again it was piped onto parchment paper.
There are little spreaders to go with it-nobody was dipping their bread directly into the butter. We have had herbed butter for holiday meals and it is served in a small crock or bowl with spreaders. Same idea.

I am glad it went over well. Sounds great to me, I love bread and butter. I agree with others that I was surprised how many people showed the butter board hate on the other thread. 😄. No hate from me, and I also love a good pot luck and buffet.
It would be a pretty boring world if we were all the same, so no judgement on those that hate it or those that love it…but I am on the love side of this trend.

The concept is just icky to me. I know tons of people love it and I dont think those people are icky- it just isn't my cup of tea! Im sure everything is clean and incontaminated, my brain just doesnt think it's for me!

I actually HATE butter! I've never liked it. I googled what Butter Boards look like and they are pretty. Being pretty still would be a big NO for me!

I did one last NYE for a family party and it was a big hit. It’s no different than any other charcuterie/crudite/veggie tray, or even eating dinner at someone’s house, because we put it on our own plates and then spread it on bread from there. No one’s smearing their fingers through it or licking it directly off the board. 😂
I did two savory and one sweet: garlic and herb, sun-dried tomato, and pomegranate-honey with almonds. The last one was definitely the favorite!

I think it sounds delicious! The only problem I see, is that katybee is going to be expected to bring a butter board to every gathering of that friends group!

I did a butter board for Christmas last year and my family really liked it. I'll probably do another one this year.

I saw a video where someone made a candle out of melted butter, they added rosemary and other herbs, cut a hole in the center of a round loaf of bread, and put the candle in the center. I thought it looked interesting.
