1. Perhaps the turtle does not want to be in solitary confinement. (Give him to a zoo or ? where he is around other tortoises).
2. If you want to confine him, get a properly built fence and gate. (sheesh, this gate looks as flimsy a construction as can be.)

Yeah, he is probably looking for the companionship of a lady tortoise. Maybe they should go back to the rescue organization and choose a girlfriend for him. Even if they don’t mate, it would be a friend.

We call our turtle "Houdini Turtle", because he can hide better than any magician. A few months ago my neighbor babysat our turtle for 10 days. He has a turtle/tortoise family and initially gifted our turtle to yds. He couldn't return our turtle for a few days after we got home, because our turtle was hiding and couldn't be found. He shows up when he wants to do so. We built a pen for him in our back yard. Right now, he's hibernating in our shed. So, we know where he is until spring.
