So I am seeing everything today mentioning The 12 Days of Christmas, because I guess it is 12 days until Christmas - yikes! But honestly - The Twelve Days of Christmas doesn't start until December 25! December 25th is The First Day of Christmas. The 12th day of Christmas is January 6th, the Epiphany. I am not a practicing Christian, but to me, that is how Christmas is. Now days, it seems like Christmas starts the day after Halloween, and by December 26, people have everything down and put away. I'd be sick of it too by then, if I put it up in early November - lol But I love to enjoy "Christmas" once the big rush of getting ready for it is over. The somewhat quiet days between Christmas and New Years ... which really aren't that quiet for us on the farm, because that is the last days we can get our inputs purchased for tax reasons. Make me nuts! LOL I love it when everyone is home and little kids are racing around. But I love it when they pack up and leave, I have the mess put away and I can sit quietly and enjoy the memories. Welp.. that's my rant.... the Twelve Days of Christmas doesn't start until December 25th!

preach it! I'm a barely practising Catholic at this point but I love Advent as we prepare for Christmas and then having the 12 days to celebrate...helps spread it all out and really enjoy the season.

Agree. It’s the 12 days between Christmas and the Epiphany. As a kid, we never took down Christmas decorations until January 6th. Now I usually take them down before going back to work which is usually slightly before Jan 6th.

I agree. It was surprising how many people had Christmas decorations up in their Thanksgiving pictures.

The 12 days marks the number of days the wise men had to travel to see the baby Jesus. They arrived in Bethlehem on January 6th, which is called Epiphany.

Actually my dh’s family celebrates “Ukrainian Christmas Eve” on January 6 th and we don’t take our decorations down til the 14th

Meh, I really don’t care how other people choose to bring joy into their life. There’s enough shit going on in the world to really get worked up over, but this ain’t it.

Our church had a music director for years. He would NOT sing any Christmas song until after Dec.25th because, "Christ has not been born yet, so we can't be celebrating his birth." We would sing any Christmas related songs after Christmas and that was it. While I agree, I disagree. The date of Christ's birth is unknown and was just selected to compete with winter soltice celebrations, so does it really matter if we sing a Christmas carol before Dec. 25th?

My complaint is: That's a whole lot of birds! When I was about 4 or 5, I woke up and went out to the living room, where The Birds was on TV. Been terrified of birds ever since. So, the thought of the number of cumulative birds in that song makes me uncomfortable. I still listen to it and sing along but {shiver}

Christmas is now less about religion and more about commercialism (as a whole). Time changes most things and this is one of them. For me, I think that the busyness of getting it all together before Christmas and then making the day special for everyone is just a lot. We open gifts on the 24th, the kids go to the other houses on the 25th and I spend the day sitting in front of the tree and hanging out and then shortly after that, my mind says to start taking it down so my mind can relax and not think about how much time I need to get it all down and clean up glitter for the next two weeks. I get very left brained around the holidays.

For me, I think that the busyness of getting it all together before Christmas and then making the day special for everyone is just a lot. I often wonder if we just make it harder than it needs to be, in order for it to be perfect. Yet it is never quite as perfect as it was when we were kids. And looking back, it was far from perfect I don't think I ever got what I had on my Santa list - but what I got was just perfect! Now it seems that kids have lists, and it MUST be that item. And maybe it isn't the "kids list" but the list that their parents make for them? I am lucky that my kids let me get what I want for my grandkids. I do consult a little, to make sure they don't have it already. I agree with them to not go crazy. Just a couple things that are fun to play with and maybe an outfit. We put the majority of money into an investment account for them. So maybe I spend around $100 per grandkid and we invest $1000 on their birthday and $1000 at Christmas in their accounts. I feel like we are so lucky to be able to do that for them. My inlaws did this and my kids have a nice nest egg. None of them have dipped into yet, and it continues to grow nicely every year.

My shopping was all done last week and I am wrapping now. Thankfully my kids are all adults and the only thing that was on the baby's list was a fire extinguisher. That is under the tree. . I was able to pick out some Avalanche outfits and some books for her. Santa is bringing her a recliner. The rest goes into a Schwab account for her. I was able to order about 80% of my gifts online this year. Loved that. My husband loves to look at lights and do other Christmas season activities. My friends and I love to get together and meet for dinner or lunch. We have work events and some family stuff thrown in there too. Tonight is Christmas craft night (a newer holiday tradition). It is just a busy season for activities that we don't normally do in such high volume.
