I had to take my poor 17-year-old to the ER in the wee hours in severe pain, and it turns out they have a kidney stone trying to pass. Any tips for them for making this easier? We have an Oxy prescription but so far it's been manageable with OTC painkillers, and I've been keeping them drinking water.

Drink drink drink!!
Mine was stuck in the bend of the ureter. It sat there and did its damage for over six weeks until I had lithotripsy!!
Two months later I had to have a ciscostomy(?)(where they went in and inserted a stent) because the ureter was swollen shut!

Will the stone be analyzed? If so, the Dr should tell your child what foods are creating the stones and then avoid those foods.
If the stones are not analyzed, then drink LOTS of water so that the child urinates often and minerals can't form the stones.

Water, water and more water! Walking always helps mine to move on out. Take the pain meds, don’t wait for pain to get worse. It will help relax the ureter so it will pass.

DH and DD both get them. DH is the kind of person that realizes he's cut himself only when he sees blood. He's rarely affected by pain. Kidney stones wipe him out. One time I took him to the walk in clinic in horrible pain. They gave him a shot that made the pain go away instantly. I'm not sure what it was, but it was a lifesaver.
Lots and lots of water. DD says hot baths help her. DH met with one urologist who was female. She told him she'd had kidney stones and she'd given birth. Kidney stone pain was way worse.
Best to your oldest. Crossing fingers is passes quickly.

I have no advice but I'm sorry they are dealing with this and I hope it will pass soon!

Oh I just got done with this right before Thanksgiving.
Of course, have them drink lots of water. But I also got a bunch of pain relief from a heating pad + hot baths. Did the Dr prescribe Flomax? That helped me a bunch. I also had a prescription for something that caused my urine to turn orange (I cannot recall what it was though). It helped with the spasms.
I will say this --- if at any point you think the stone could be stuck, please go to the ER. I passed a smaller stone and assumed that was all. But 12 hours later, it became that I could no longer urinate or when I did I would only have a literal drop of urine. I finally went back to the ER and I was trying to pass a much larger stone and it was stuck. If I had waited any longer I could have done real damage to my kidneys. A quick day surgery and home that night and my nightmare was over.
And to reply on the 'kidney stones are worse pain than labor' comment ----- stones are waaaay worse. I had two all natural, no pain medicine given childbirths. And that childbirth pain was only a mere fraction of kidney stones. I would not wish that pain on the devil himself.

I had a BIL who was having a kidney stone every year. After the 3rd year, the dr. told him to get a gallon jug and collect his urine. Keep drinking water until he learned how much he had to drink to create a gallon of urine each day. He did ...and no longer had kidney stones.
I can only think that must have been about a gallon of water to drink to create that much "output."

Wife of a chronic kidney stone former here 🙋🏻♀️. If they didn’t refer you to urology, I would call your primary care first thing Monday morning and have them call to get you in asap. Like mom mentioned, Flomax is part of the standard regimen the doctors here use. A lot of factors can impact the success in passing the stone(s) or not so having urology involved is important. If the stone was in the kidney, and isn’t causing severe pain for the time being, it may have “landed” and not be moving right now. My husband has been sent home with “passable stones” by an ER doc that urology looked at and immediately called BS. If that is the case, it is far better to get them taken care of before they leave the kidney. My DH had a situation also with an obstructed ureter and we are now hyper-vigilant at the first sign of a stone to not end up in that situation again. Best of luck to them!

Oh no! Poor kid! I had them, and discovered I have a third kidney (I was a twin in the womb). It's so painful, definitely heating pad and hot baths helped. Will they laser it? I had to see a urologist.

I just had another kidney stone right before Thanksgiving. The CT showed it was about 1 mm and almost to the bladder. Once it hits the bladder the pain goes away and it’s easier to pass. They did prescribe the Flomax, but I passed the stone before I could get the Rx filled. The Flomax dilates the ureter which makes it easier for the kidney stone to move through it.
Did they say what size the stone is? If it’s small enough to pass on its own, the Flomax may help, along with a ton of water and moving as much as possible. Did they give your kid a strainer so they can catch the stone and know when it has passed?
As far as analyzing the stone, a big majority are calcium oxalate stones.

Thanks, everyone! They think they have passed it because it has been 36 hours without pain, but we'll see. My husband gets them but his have required surgery, so, weirdly, I was in the dark about how to manage one small enough to pass.
