I bought 4 "school days" albums (8.5x11) at HL for less than $5 each today. AND decluttered 12 flimsy 3-ring binders in the process of moving the kids' homeschooling albums into the new albums. YAY! AND they both look nicer on my shelves AND take up less space. Win-win!

Just a few small wins for today, but I will take them as Iām feeling like crap and could have done nothing! One book gone and reading the next one, more perfume, a bra I just fit into again but it fit weird, and a scented lotion that matches DHās favorite perfume. But I never wore it.
The book Iām reading now is another declutter book that is so slim I couldnāt see it between books. As Iām reading it Iām adding the things it makes me think of to a list so that I can do it when I feel better.
Oh, and DH started a ātime will tellā box (thanks minimal mom!) for our kitchen stuff and Iāll add to it tomorrow. I think this will help a lot with that concern that we are going to need it mentality. Especially since some of it all-clad cookware, so expensive to replace if we decide we were wrong. I think we have too much, and it makes it easier to go longer without washing something. We buy dishes, utensils, glasses, and some prep stuff in larger quantities because we know it takes several days for us to fill the dishwasher. But these are hand wash so the extra is just enabling our laziness and makes it a pain to get things out.

I recently accepted a new job, and I decided that that is my line in the sand to get organized before I begin working again (after 20 years as a SAHM). So, today, I contacted and subsequently hired a home organizer to come in next week and help me make bigger progress than I can make in a short period of time on my own. I will have the help of two organizers for three hours, so a total of six extra "man-hours" to tackle two spaces in my home. Right now, I'm thinking I'll focus on my family room and kitchen, but the dining room is in contention, too, since it's the catch-all room in the house that has about six different functions. Anyway, we'll see how it goes, and if it goes well, I may sign-on for more help, but this is just to begin to make a dent, see if I like this person's style, determine whether the money is worth the outcome, etc. Has anyone else ever hired an organizer, and if so, did you have a good experience? I'm sorry if this has been mentioned previously in this thread. I don't always keep up with it so forgive me if I'm duplicating.

Daily declutter task from My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar: Clear out one pile in a hallway. Oh to have a hallway large enough for a pile of anything. Mine is so stupidly narrow, I will not put anything on the walls. Forget the floor.

Have you been able to start on your camping gear linda ? Iām like alsomsknit , my hallways are too small for anything to be on the floor. My entryway is plenty big, and sometimes things pile there, especially after trips, but right now itās clear. I had a really great decluttering day today! In terms of size everything would add up to a good sized box. But more than that, several items that kept making the cut when I decluttered before either due to clutter blindness or not wanting to admit I wasnāt going to use them are finally out the door. A luxury duvet set will hopefully be going to one of DHās coworkers, if not we will donate to a charity shop for an animal shelter, and I finally made the decision to let the set of counting crossstitch ornaments go there as well. As much as I wanted to, I just didnāt enjoy it when I picked it up again. And a set of 12 napkin rings my mom got me which I love and go perfectly with our kitchen and dining decor and Fiestawareā¦but I never use. I used to have a huge stash of ribbon for wrapping presents and crafting that I have decluttered and used over the years to get down to a partially full drawer. Today while organizing a different drawer in the unit I decided to go through them and only kept about 8 spools, all favorites that go well with the one patterned roll of wrapping paper I use now, the rest into my crafty donations. Thatās another suggestion from Peter Walsh I loved and finally brought myself to try out. Have a single wrapping paper that sort of becomes your signature, and a few different ribbons that go with it. Or maybe he said one combination, I donāt remember. I love wrapping so Iāve resisted forever but a couple of years ago decided I would go crazy at Christmas, but would use his suggestion for the gifts I give throughout the year. So I selected this watercolor rainbow paper for most gift giving occasions, plus a thick shiny white paper. For me this is a minor miracle. And when I was storing the ribbons with the paper I noticed my gift wrapping tackle box. I no longer use the bow making tools in there, so Iām moving the items I do use to the wrapping paper box and reusing the tackle box for something Iāve needed a different solution for. Double win! Plus more perfume that I tested today, and I am almost finished with the unread book I selected yesterday from my stash. Iām getting a lot out of it, but I wonāt reference or read it again so itāll be donated when I complete it tonight and Iāll pick out the next one to read/reread.

Have you been able to start on your camping gear linda ? It's NOT my camping gear and whilst I've told and reminded DD17 multiple times...there it still is. At least she pulled the clothes and sleeping bag out (and I've washed them)...time to remind her AGAIN

I am jumping in. Yesterday I cleaned and organized 2 kitchen cabinets. A lot of items that only get used a few times a year went to downstairs storage. When we need them, we need them but they were taking up a lot of space. I have limited cabinet space, so I needed to rethink it a bit. The next annoying area is the top of the fridge. I have cookbooks there, but I don't used them on a regular basis. Each one has a few recipes we do use, but I don't need the entire book handy. I thought about taking pictures of my favorite recipes, but I much prefer a hard copy when cooking. Looking on my phone is too hard. I have a small tablet so I could maybe try that, but often forget to charge it. Plus how do I get the recipes from cookbooks to my tablet in an organized way. How do you organize your cookbooks? How do you organize recipes etc.? Thank you. I have a 3 ring binder with page protectors that I use to store recipes. Just tear out the pages you want. Blasphemy, I know, to destroy a book. But, it makes more sense than keeping a book for 2 pages. LOL, I wouldnāt be able to do it. I would rather photocopy the pages I wanted to keep and donate the cookbook intact. Iāve actually photocopied recipes I use a lot out of cookbooks Iām not going to get rid of because itās easier to use them that way.

If youāre going to cut up a book, the rest should just be recycled, not donated. But thatās just me.

They have this for 3 days. Apparently there are lots of hallways big enough for piles and lots of piles in said hallways! I mean we have three hallways plus the entryway here...I don't think 2 of them are big enough for piles but 3/4 do seem to acquire them. Upstairs hallway is long but not especially wide but DH tends to have a stack of stuff piled outside his bonus room in the hall and DD does (less often) pile stuff outside her door that she needs to bring downstairs. The entryway is a dumping spot for both DH and DD. The back hall is short but relatively wide as it doubles as a utility room and has space opposite the washer/dryer for litter boxes...laundry is what tends to accumulate there. The hallway that stays clear is the short one between the living room and our bedroom.

Apparently there are lots of hallways big enough for piles and lots of piles in said hallways! We do have several hallways capable of piles but I try to keep those areas clear of them. Thatās not to say there arenāt piles of junk everywhere else, LOL. But having said that, there is some stuff that is in the entryway coming from the garage that I told DH it needed to go somewhere else because Iām sick of looking at it, including a box with a random part that I donāt know where he wants it where he will know where it is, a big box with a blow up mattress in it and a metal jug with some sealer or stain or some chemical. So basically none of it is my crap. Oh, and a giant pack of toilet paper that needs to get put away.

We only have 1 hallway in our house, itās upstairs leading to the extra bedrooms, and it is definitely too narrow to have anything on the floor. I must just be used really open concept houses because my sister is the only person I can think of that has more than one hallway! And several of the people with the one hallway, theyāre not really even halls, just like 3 feet or so to lead to the other room through an arch or opening. Guess Iām lucky in this regard, less public space that is likely to be cluttered!

dewryce - we really didn't want an open concept house which did prolong our house buying as modern houses are almost all open concept and many of the older ones had been converted. One of our hallways is like you describe - the one from the living room to the main bedroom. Well, looks like we'll be decluttering more of our fence - the rest of the bit in the front with the gate and all of one side. It's in the way of putting in a new drainfield. We had already taken out the front on the other side of the house when we put in a garage but didn't bother with the extra expense of removing the rest - they'll take it down no charge so win-win. It'll leave us with fences along part of the boundary line with the neighbour on one side (his side yard, our back yard) and along one side between us and the property there (our side yard, their backyard. The other two sides are road facing. The previous owners had fenced in the back yard but we don't need that.

Three days and three listings have sold - yay! Now my āfor saleā pile is a bit smaller and Iāve also cleared out a couple of boxes Iād held onto to post sold items. Cleared under the dining table - did I just move a full box of Lego to sort to another room? Yes. But the room looks so much better. Also cleared off a few items on top of my dining room table - put them away or piled so theyāre tidier to the eye.

Forgot to add I also decluttered my āto do laterā list - doctor appointment finally scheduled, present bought for ds friend, cash withdrawn for birthday club at work, package mailed, mail collected for friend. Took all morning but much better than having a full list of annoying 5 min tasks to try and squeeze into my schedule on many days, just completed them all on one day instead š

These were areas Iāve gone through many times and said āyep, itās done.ā Just goes to show nope itās not done and itās time to take another look

To do items, especially ones Iāve been avoiding feel so dang good when I complete them, definitely a big declutter win. Iām doing the same, thought I was done and was just maintaining but watching some YouTubers has really motivated me and Iām digging super deep this timeā¦like I thought I already had already! eta: I watched this video by Mia Danielle twice today, once on my own and again with DH, and I really recommend it. Itās titled 5 habit swaps for a minimalist life, but donāt let that deter you. Everything applies to decluttering and maintaining that and theyāre simple and she explains them well. Some are oldies but goodies like quality over quantity and experiences over things, but others were either new or she added another way of looking at them that resonated with me, especially number 2. Also, I have to brag, while we were watching DH was like āthatās a Peter Walsh thing.ā Gotta love it!

Today I did my current daily declutter tasks of collections Iām trying to seriously reduce of perfume and samples (testing 2 a day), lipstick (also testing 2), and an unread reference book every other day or so. That would go faster but Iām also reading a fiction book most days and I donāt want to stop the fun reading!
Then today I also went through our placemats and only kept the set we use with our wedding china, computer speakers I donāt use, and a wall clock that I like, but I donāt think it adds enough to the space to hang it back up. Visual clutter really affects me so we try to really limit what goes on our walls and horizontal surfaces.

I bought a new bench for my mudroom and moved the old one right into my vehicle. I dropped it off at Goodwill yesterday, so same day!
I also gave DH's sister an old Christmas stocking she wanted. I knew she'd be seeing another brother, so I also handed off a bag of canning jars to give his wife. Whoo! I now have a clean mudroom.

Flushing the meds or putting in the trash will only pollute the water & ground and will further add to buried hazardous waste. If she did - great. But sometimes it's not possible to choose the absolutely best disposal for each and every item of clutter and we do what we can when we can - and that's okay. No one is able to make 100% good choices for environment all the time - there are always compromises. And truthfully - individual people are not the bigger problem nor are able to be the bigger solution - corporations cause the vast majority of pollution and waste.
