Happy New Year! ๐๐๐ Today is the start of a new year, and along with that new goals and resolutions to get our lives in order. For some of us those will be a continuation of last year's goals, while others are just getting going with decluttering and organizing their homes and lives. Last year we had 45,000+ views of the thread while in 2022 there were 33,000+ views. Decluttering and organizing are definitely becoming something more people are interested in doing. I've said that decluttering/organizing/downsizing belongings has become the hobby of Baby Boomers everywhere! Some of you will just be here for a month or two while others will be popping in throughout the year. Just remember that there is no one way to go about the process as we have fans of nearly all the systems, be it Marie Kondo, Peter Walsh, Swedish Death Cleaning and so many more. Whatever your style, you will find lots of knowledge, support and encouragement here. Welcome to the thread! Let the fun begin! ***************************** Throughout the year I will add links to products, websites and articles that pertain to decluttering and organizing to this spot, so check back occasionally to see if new things have been linked! Happy New Year everybody! I donโt have any hard and fast goals for 2024 but I do want to keep on keeping on with getting my house more in order, especially the more visible areas.

Happy New Year! As I said in the 2023 thread, my decluttering mantra this year is "Peace over possessions." I have a number of home projects that I want to do (mostly painting but also new flooring in the basement and kitchen) and I think that will help push me to be more ruthless in order to make more visible changes. I don't have a set plan yet, but do want to try to focus on one room of the house each week. I should look at the calendar and mark that down based on how much time I will have on any given weekend. Some rooms need more attention than others. So if we have a tournament on a weekend, I will choose a lighter area to work on.

I'm pursuing Swedish Death Cleaning for DS, who is not a "things" kind of person. Do not want to leave him with a big mess after I'm gone. My goal is to do at least one declutter job a day, even if it's just a drawer or even something smaller. Will be popping in here and there.

Happy New Year's declutter-ers! Last night I was thinking about my 2024 goals, and I definitely have a few forming in my mind. I'll list a few off the top of my head, but am sure to think of more as the year continues. 1. Unwanted books gone. Yesterday I detailed about my decision to dispose of the kid books. Still feeling very good about that. This morning I remembered about five books that I have stashed. They were freebies from the library that I picked up as just in case reads for during my son's surgery recovery last summer. I never read them. Never cracked them open. Honestly, I have zero idea what they're about. They will go out this week. 2. Giving myself guilt-free permission to give up on and compost failed plant propagations and houseplants. It's more stressful for me to have sad little pots of soil with struggling basil, than to toss them.

I may be one of those people that only pop in and out but I love reading everyone's suggestions and the links! I just finished up purging and updating my home filing system (yes I am a paper person) but only keeping the essentials. Cleaning up my Mom's files since she passed taught me that I need to NEVER leave a mess for my girls to have to wade through.
Put away Christmas this morning and plan on putting my feet up and watching my traditional movie - You've Got Mail. My motto for this year is Breath In, Breath Out, Move Forward. I've been through a lot with my Mom passing and a sibling who thinks everything I did/have done for Mom was not how she would have done it, so it wasn't correct. It was how Mom wanted things (which is why I was POA and HCPOA) up until the very end.
Now if I can remember how to go into my profile to change my quote to my new motto - I'll call this a successful day!
Happy New Year!

As always, I have many goals. ๐ 1. Continue downsizing the storage units - hopefully will get them down to just one. 2. Organize the storage unit(s) so like items are near each other - example, store all the Christmas decorations near each other. 3. Clean out my closet/dresser/hanging storage rack in the other bedroom. As I lose weight, this should be easier to weed out stuff. 4. Use up/toss my skincare supplies and ONLY order stuff when I am almost out of a specific product. 5. Decide how I am going to organize/catalog my stamps. I posted previously on the scrappy organization page that I either need to make a storage binder like lasteve1 or commit to Laura W's system, where she cuts her stamps apart and organizes them by theme and gets rid of the stamps she'll never use. 6. Control my urges to binge shop. 7. Sell some of my Portland Leather Goods items that I received in mystery boxes. I am going to a meet up in Charlotte in a couple weeks, and I hope to sell/trade some items there - that route will definitely cut down on shipping fees! 8. Continue reading through my books and get rid of books I'll never read again. I have a stack of books from 2023 that I need to take to church of Christian fiction books. 9. Edit some of my decor items. I have a fair amount of things I've purchased at estate sales/auctions, and I know there is stuff I can release. 10. See about converting my comforter into a duvet cover. I love the pattern of the bedding, but I hate that I have to take it to the laundry mat to wash it and spend about $8 to do so. I'd much rather make it into a duvet cover, so I can pop it into my own washer more frequently. 11. Work on Emily Ley's January Simplified challenge. 12. Use the 2Peas and Scrapbook Generation challenges to use up some of my scrappy supplies. Challenges: 1. After my job ends on 1/3, I'll have loads more free time. I need to be disciplined to hunt for another job while taking advantage of this downtime to declutter and organize while also working on expanding my professional skill set. 2. As many of you may know, I live with my mom to help take care of her. She suffers from memory issues, and it can be a nightmare to downsize stuff, especially when she forgets that some stuff actually belongs to me (either I purchased it or it was given to me). She also forgets when she has said it is OK to get rid of something, fishes it out of the donate pile, and then gets angry if I try to get rid of it. This is even worse when it comes to the storage units, as she actually does have some stuff in there that is hers. It doesn't help that she helped to pack up my house for my last move, and some of the handwriting on the boxes is hers - she instantly assumes the items in those boxes are hers. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ I'm still trying to figure out how to make real progress in there without more meltdowns from her.

I need to organize and declutter our large house because DH and I would like to downsize to a much smaller house. We have lived in our current house for 15 years...the longest we have lived anywhere. So I know there is just stuff that we don't need.

Happy New Year! I have lots of decluttering and organizing I need to do in various areas of my life. Being in grad school for the last two years put a lot of things on the back burner so now that I'm done with that, I have time and energy to focus on the things that got neglected. My family was an amazing support and we got through it together--but they have their own lives too so we just did what was needed.
We've had some changes in the household arrangement. At the beginning of November, my younger son moved into the bedroom I had been using for an office. My office is now in the family room. The family room is a long rectangle so I have part of it for my office and then the other part is the actual family room with the couches, TV, etc. I have my desk with my computer, monitor, etc. on one wall, then the opposite wall has my craft table. Currently, the craft table is piled with stuff that I moved out of the bedroom to make room for my son's stuff. My first goal is to get my office area cleaned up. This will accomplish several things: the area will just look better in relation to the family room part, I will have my craft space so I can actually *do* projects, I will get rid of unneeded stuff, find homes for the stuff I am keeping, and I am hoping to move more of my stuff out of the bedroom.
I also want to deep clean my kitchen this month.
Here's to 2024! Good luck to everyone!
Merilee

Small progress is still progress: last night I went through my two carryon suitcases and my wheeled underseat bag. I took out all of the extra stuff in them and stored the underseat bag in one of the carryons - while I wish I would have fit in the matching suitcase, I'm glad it takes up less room now.
I need to wash all of my packing cubes and store then in one of bags.
I also need to go through the little case that I slip in the seat pocket when I fly and organize it. I keep nose spray, prednisone, gum, tissues, mints/hard candy, wired earbuds, small face mist spray, small hand lotion, extra mask, wet wipes, small packs of Purell, and Biotene gel in it - my ears are terrible, so the nose spray, prednisone, and gum help with the problem! I don't have any plans to fly this year, so I need to take everything with an expiration date out and make a list of things I'll need to refill it with for the next time I fly. The bag is big enough to hold my phone and my Samsung Galaxy Buds2, so it is super handy. Once I'm done with that project, I'll place the bag in the carryon with my packing cubes.
I need to do something similar with my 311 bag and non-liquid toiletries bags. If I drive somewhere, I'll typically just bring my full sized products, but I probably need to use up my travel toiletries so they don't go bad. Some containers I refill, others I get new things. I need to make a list for each bag of the items I typically put in them to make my life easier the next time I pack.

Happy New Year everyone!
Need to get Christmas down today or tomorrow. Would do it now if my Mom wasn't asleep in the den where our tree is. So I am trying to go through meds for drug take back and my drawers to throw stuff away.

Happy New Year!
While cleaning out this past week, Iโve decided to see how long I can go โno buyโ. - I have enough โnewโ clothes to probably last me the whole year. I donโt need to buy anymore replacement black Tโs (my favorite casual top). - I wonโt buy any art/craft supply unless I run out of something, like white paint or adhesive. - I have a stack of unread books. I will buy one new book only after Iโve read (or donated) 5 in my stack.
Meanwhile, I am finishing up my craft space today. I have a nice trash/donate pile going on. Iโve decided to store a few things (Sizzix and Quickuts dies) in the garage, which is where I put stuff I am not quite ready to donate yet.
And then since the weather is nice, weโll be taking down the outdoor Christmas lights today.

Last year was successful for me for the main living areas, kitchen and front bathroom. We did a major redecoration project and did a lot of purging and reorganizing. For the first time I really love my house and enjoy spending time in those areas. The best part is that I don't miss any of the stuff we got rid of!
2024 will be the year of the Guest/Junk Room. I've included this space for several years but this year I mean it! It's the only non-usable room now and in a smaller home all space needs to be usable. Several projects to be tackled in there - DH's too-big suits/business clothes, photos/scrapbooks, dresser full of keepsakes and vintage linens, several boxes of memorabilia (mine and my parents). It's going to be a long process.
There is also a 7'x10' storage space we are renting and DH would like to get rid of it this year. That will involve selling some furniture and a weaving loom, not to mention all the additional boxes of keepsakes/memorabilia.

This is my first year joining in. My first step is my closet. I work from home now, 3/4 of the clothes I no longer need and will not wear. Gone. Shoes. Gone.
Then to the grandkids toys.......

I will be checking in at least once or twice a week. My bullet journal is all ready for 2024 with the priority being decluttering and health priorities. DH and I are both retired and although he does not want to address it, we need to think about decluttering. More to come.....

Once again I fell off the organize/declutter wagon last year, everyday life just got in the way. So this year, no distractions, no excuses. Iโve made my list of everything that needs to be done and I hope to accomplish all of it. Scratching things off my list is almost as satisfying as actually getting the job done.

Happy New Year!
2024 goals?
Keep labelling/organising mum's photos - 1960s this year (I'll revisit if I finish early)
Sew or donate at least 10 yards of fabric
Donate more books than I buy/get given (I'm starting the year at 673 actual books that I own on my TBR)
Organise/purge/label ONE box of family papers
Continue the maintenance phase around the house by decluttering as I see things I don't need

Love seeing all the posts on the new thread already! I love the decluttering company. I emptied one of the kid book bins into several reusable bags for donation/give away. several books actually went straight to recycling, because they were ripped/over-loved. I actually only kept one book from that bin - Elf On A Shelf. I remember buying it from a thrift store for a buck and was so pleased, because at the time it was only being sold in the kits for something like $25. I put the book in my Christmas storage bin. I immediately washed and reused the clear bin for storing the two twenty pound bags of rice (Rice is still in the bags, but wanted the bags in a bin.) That brought me to organizing and cleaning out my dry goods & can pantry. There was a lot more to toss than I realized (I usually feel very on top of the food storage). Tossed two almost finished cans of iced tea mix powder. They were over a year old, and hard at the bottom. I cannot remember the last time we made any. Went through the cereal boxes. Tossed the remains of four cereals that had almost none left (why leave that for me to find, fam?) and were pretty stale looking. Neatened up the can goods, putting like with like. Noticed things that we have more than enough of, and shouldn't buy next shopping trip. Pantry shelves look very satisfyingly tidy now. Also, thought of another category to declutter: gift bags and accessories. I'm going to give it a full year of using down the items in the bin I have for them, then doing away with whatever isn't used in that time. If it's not used through all those birthdays and holidays, it won't be used. That does not include greeting cards. I felt a lot of success using only Christmas cards that I already had on hand this year. Although, I only had four I needed to send out, I also used five to hold gift cards for the kids as gifts under the tree.

I started a day early and found some new storage (Lightroom at Target) for a 30 inch drawer under my pantry. I have kept hot chocolate and candy making stuff in the drawer and then my husband got a smoker and thought the semi empty drawer now needed to be a smoker drawer. Found new storage that lets me claim half of the drawer and he's now got an organized half. Good storage lets me keep what is mine. ETA: Prior to this week, I donated three large suitcases to Goodwill. I kept 4 and some bags that fit inside of them. My entire SUV has been filled with boxes and bags twice this winter break. All made their way to Goodwill. The day after Christmas, there were 8 vehicles in line at Goodwill. Usually you can rive right up or have a one or two car wait. Looks like the busy season for decrapping.

my decluttering mantra this year is "Peace over possessions." I love this! Will have to remember as I have trouble shedding the memorabilia this year. I may be one of those people that only pop in and out but I love reading everyone's suggestions and the links! This is my first year joining in. I will be checking in at least once or twice a week. Welcome to all those new to the thread! We love having you here and hope to see more of you. An important thing to remember is that you didn't accumulate all this clutter in a short time so decluttering is not going to be a quick job. Every little step forward you make is success! Just keep taking those baby steps and they will add up in time. One tip many of us use is to come here to post what we've gotten rid of. It's nice to look back at the end of the year and remember how much you accomplished. Because trust me, a year from now you won't remember much of the stuff you shed!

Got Christmas down. Just needs to go to shed.
Next project is washing/drying clothes for booths. We can only have 6 pieces in there at a time, per rules by owner. We probably have 30 pieces to sell. Last batch was in there for couple hours at most. Hope we sell through the rest quickly. It's mainly vintage sports clothing.
Also need to work on my closet and toss a bunch of stuff.
We are planning a small 'buying' road trip in March so hopefully we can get through the storage shed by then.

I need to get out of the mentality โI need to save this or that just in caseโ. I need to use it , donate it or toss it depending on what it is.
I have tons of holiday paper plates and napkins โjust in case the school needs themโโฆ. Well I just made a huge bag and donating to the school and Iโm done.

I'm feeling very If You Give A Mouse A Cookie today, and one decluttering task is leading to the next. I just finished decluttering the four food pantry cabinets in the kitchen (separate from the dry goods pantry from earlier). I trashed items that had no right to be as emotional as they were. I'm part embarrassed and part sad. Mom passed a little more than two years ago now. There have been a few seasoning mixes sitting in the very top of the spices cupboard. Things that I don't make. Things that she had bought with the intent of making to try out with my dad. I knew they were there, in a back of my mind type of way, but because they weren't gross and weren't hurting anything, I left them. For two years. Plus however long she had had them in there. They're gone and I feel better, but still sad. They didn't define her. They were not even important. Not even to her. And yet.....Sad. On a brighter note, I cleaned out and tidied up so much. Is it just me, or do you sometimes find so much more to toss than what you thought was there? I literally touched every single item. So many almost empty boxes of teabags (I'm not really a tea drinker, so don't usually have reason to go in them.)
But, the nearly empty bags of stale coffee grounds? Yeah, that's on me.
Tossed old oatmeal.
Tossed bay leaf crumbs (we already opened the new container of bay leaves, so why do we keep the crumbs?)
Tossed the gritty remains of old oregano (also have a new one already opened)
Took note of what we have plenty of, and don't need to buy next shopping trip.
I'm doing the open the cabinet doors and smile at the neat and tidy contents every time I go into the kitchen.

I'm going to try and join in this year.
I actually started off this weekend with cataloging and making decisions on mt Stamps.
Still working through that. But it's a start.
I'm not going to put down specific goals. I just want to have a place for everything. Get rid of what I don't need/want/use and be at peace with my home.

2023 was the year I was in charge of leading the emptying of my parent's 3 story with a full attic hoarded house. (It is supposed to close on Friday so I am keeping my fingers crossed that goes through) Since that was finished, I have been very liberal with getting rid of things and 2024 I am going to continue. And then what I keep, I want it organized so it can be usable.

Welcome, 2024! My plan for the year is to just keep going back to all the 'storage' areas of my house and garage and look at them with fresh eyes every few months. Sometimes I hold onto things because I *might* need them or because I *still* like them, but those are not static states--often on revisiting, things can be let go. I have an office closet filled with old momentos and negatives and assorted craft and sewing supplies that all need to be culled, so the closet is my January/maybe February project. My parents plan on moving into a seniors apartment in the spring/summer, so there will be lots to help with on that front. They/we used to move quite often for my dad's job, but they have lived in this house for 20 years, and have accumulated more than they did in their first 30 years of marriage! The last time they moved, I was already married with kids, so I have absolutely no nostalgic ties to their house or most of the furniture inside it, plus I am a ruthless thrower-awayer and not a keeper ... I'm pretty sure I'll be the least favourite kid by the time all is said and done My other decluttering goals are also for other people ... my kids who live at home ... and don't share my level of tidiness! I have resolved not to push and nag, but there will likely be a bit of begging and persuasion throughout the year ... and perhaps some bribing!
