Good morning, happy Friday, let’s end the work week with a bang! Here is the declutter task for today from the My Simpler Life Declutter Calendar.
Go through your spices to discard expire and old ones.
Bonus: get rid of spices you don’t care for or otherwise just never use. Looking at you Chinese Five Spice! I store my oils/fats, vinegars, sweeteners, and alcohol purchased just for cooking on the pantry door with these so I’ll go through them as well. If I’m still motivated I’ll stick with the added flavors theme and do condiments in the fridge.

I had a picnic set listed on my local buy nothing group which was picked up yesterday. It's only a small win, but it was one of those things that was always in the way where it was stored so I'm glad it's gone somewhere it will be used and appreciated. That’s probably one of those items you declutter that you’ll remember and appreciate every time you access that particular storage area. I’d call that a big win!

I need to read and participate in this thread often!
My daughter and granddaughter moved into my home when I did 7 1/2 years ago. They moved out last Friday and I now have my house! I am having all of the rooms painted including ceilings, walls, trim and doors and having flooring put down in all rooms.
So far I’ve completely decluttered the full bathroom and the half bath. DD’s old room is almost empty except for the mattress I need to have picked up for disposal. Ds will use her bed frame and the desk I left in the room. I will be able to use at least half of that closet for storage which will alleviate the problem in my bedroom closet (it’s already been purged, a lot that is in it is scrapbooking storage items I want to keep and a sewing machine).
Today I am going to tackle my kitchen closet. It’s a converted coat/broom closet that dh added shelving to. Currently it has all of my baking supplies on one shelf, pots, pans and lids on one shelf, Instant pot and other items on one and a lot of unknown items on the top shelf. I’m guessing a lot will go into the dumpster (benefit of living in a condo is having a dumpster available all the time!)

I worked on 2 corner hutch in my kitchen this morning. Took out things that I haven't used and put them in a donate box. I also got rid of all empty boxes (that hubby insists to keep...just in case) that were stored in the bottom shelves of each hutch. My next thing later today is to work on my cabinets and get rid of what hasn't been used.

I brought all my Christmas bins up and went through them. I purged, then labeled what they contained with an index card on the end.
I purged a full box of stuff, well really two, as I threw away a lot. I have one box to donate.
I am halfway through purging ornaments. I'm getting rid of anything I don't love.
I also cleaned out all my socks. I tossed all the ones that are uncomfortable. I also realized I won't need to buy any fuzzy slipper socks for years! I had no idea how many I had.

Not a win for me (yet) but for my DD which is a huge step forward. She finally went through the clothes in the three laundry baskets in her room and sorted it all out between stuff she wanted to keep, stuff she didn’t want to keep and a bunch of worn out socks and underwear ready for the trash. Now I need to go through the big pile of giveaway stuff and decide where it should go. She has a smaller friend at the lake that some of it can go to, and the rest can be donated either at the community giveaway place or Salvation Army.
We still need to find a tall white shelf for her room for her decorative items and books so she can use the one in her closet for additional clothing storage.

My first win is under my belt!
I cleaned out the baking/pots and pans cabinet. A bunch of expired pudding mixes, evaporated milk and a few cake mixes went into the trash. Doubles of a couple items got consolidated and a few that don’t get used often went downstairs for storage. It looks great now!
Next up is the corner kitchen cabinet where mugs and vases are stored.

The weekend is coming and we are expecting snow. Since I work outside of the house I'm way to tired to do anything when I get home but have been continuing my file and digital purging at work which feels great! This weekend my plan is my kitchen cabinets - I don't even want to know what the oldest expired item is! You must come back and tell us! Just last weekend I tossed a bottle of sparkling apple cider with a Best By date of 2015. I did open it to see if it was drinkable and it was awful, even smelled off.

I’m permanently moving by late spring. I’m downsizing by 50% so lots of stuff needs to go. It’s an intimidating task. I did go through the spices in both houses this morning & brought non duplicates down to the “new” house. I’m donating the last of dads law books this afternoon. I’m still working through his stash of “pleasure” reading. Progress is being made, albeit very slowly.

This weekend my goal is to take the tree down and organize the room it’s in. I have a bunch of other things going on as well so that’s probably as far as I will get.
It sounds like a lot of you are doing really well!

I've moved the one nativity to the ornament bin, just need to wrap up the other one to add to it. I found a pair of nice flats somehow underneath the nativity set I packed up, which is weird, since I had the nativity set in the box it was sent in from Germany. 🤷♀️
I've broken down multiple boxes today, including several "good" boxes I'd been saving. This includes the boxes that my work laptop and mouse/keyboard set came in. They sent me another box to mail that stuff back. The road is a bit tricky today with ice and snow, so I'll probably mail those back on Monday.
I need to start gathering the Portland Leather Goods items that I hope to sell/trade. I'm going to a meetup in Charlotte next weekend, so I don't want to be scrambling at the last minute to gather stuff. I'm hoping to come back with less product and more money, lol.

My daughter dances in a town 45 minutes from my house so I am often "up there". I do some tutoring while she is at dance so I am not just sitting in the car the whole time. Wednesday, I didn't have time to take the box in my car to Goodwill before we left for dance and after tutoring I googled to see what the closest one from my tutoring job was. There is one right smack on my way back to the dance studio if I take another way. SO...I decided that every Wednesday this year I will drop off at least one box/bag after tutoring. I am a little more excited than is probably reasonable because it is just one box/bag a week but it feels so good to have a plan. I grabbed the Chewy box that our dog food came in yesterday for my box this week. I am going to focus on my closet to fill that box, which will be easy to do.

Today I am working on digital decluttering and organizing of files. So far I have gone through all the financial folders on my Mac and did a big purge as there were multiples of many files from when I moved to this computer a couple of years ago. I've been putting this off for too long and now it is done. Already set up all my 2024 folders for the active accounts. Next up is ordering a back up usb drive so that I can have an extra copy in the safe, as well as online. Had an experience this year where 18 months of statements disappeared from my files, both on the Mac and in the cloud. Still not 100% sure what happened, but making sure it doesn't happen again! Next digital purge/organization task will be Photos. According to my app there are 35,812 photos to go through! Fortunately I can do the work on my Mac. I've never been one to cull photos after vacations, events, etc, but this has gotten out of hand so I'll be doing a lot of purging. Getting a new backup drive just for the photos and will backup before I get started...just in case!

Good news-- no pneumonia. Need to keep it that way. Didn't get much done inside today. Need to work this weekend. Been getting up at 2 or 3 AM like clock work. Maybe I need to just stay up and work on my room before I go back to bed? idk.

Imagine how much space 52 boxes will take up and now imagine that much stuff removed from your house. That is going to be huge! Tying it to something you already do consistently is the best way to make a new habit.

I just finished all cabinets and drawers. Got rid of some containers that I have more then I need and some cooking utensils that I don't use. I also cleaned out my spices and was able to get rid of some spice jars that I thought I was going to fill up but have been empty for the past year.

Declutter task of the day from The Simpler Life Declutter Calendar:
Put all of your cans together on a can shelf.
Bonus: Discard those that are old/expired depending on your preferences. I believe there is some guidance about how long after expiration date canned food is safe, but I don’t remember details. Organize them by like items. If you have canned fruit with breakfast, consider putting them on a shelf with all of your breakfast items. If you keep all of your baking supplies together, would it work for you to keep your canned pie filling with them?
I saw a quote that I really agree with on Pinterest yesterday. Do you have one that really speaks to you and/or motivates you?

Two sets of Snap Circuits moved out to go live with a SPED teacher at a low income school in a neighboring city. While we had hoped to sell them, at this point it was just good to let them go with DD’s blessing knowing they will be used by kids who are excited to play with them.

I am terrible at digital decluttering. I need to put things into physical piles. Could you substitute using folders as your piles? Easy to make a folder for any subject you want, then drag/drop files into there. Once you have sorted your files into "piles/folders", you start going through one folder at a time. That is what I did with my financial digital files yesterday. Once you get it all into main folders it is easier to see duplicates and see what you no longer need for specific accounts. Next digital purge/organization task will be Photos. According to my app there are 35,812 photos to go through! Quoting myself here, but I made a discovery yesterday on Photos. There is now a Duplicates tab (who knows how long it's really been there ) that will show you each version of the photo and has a button to merge the photos. In actuality it keeps the better copy and deletes the duplicate. The only negative is that you can only deal with one photo at a time. Photos says I have 10,977 photos and 120 videos that are duplicates. This is going to take a while!

**GypsyGirl** The duplicate function on Photos is great! In the past, I never knew if a photo was a duplicate and just kept them all. I still keep too many photos and I have a hard time organizing them all. I'll try your tip of making piles out of folders! Thanks!

Well - the pantry and cabinets have been purged and luckily the oldest item was only from 2018, a packet of Taco Rice that was stuck way in the back! I had done a purge the beginning of COVID when I had to work from home so it wasn't as hateful as I thought it would be! LOL Now off to read the rest of your posts to see what I need to catch up with!
What shall I do tomorrow - maybe my sock drawer and closet!
Edited to add: You all have made some great accomplishments! I need to do my digital files (pictures and such) as well!

That’s…that’s a lot of duplicates. Time to find a new show to binge. That’s one thing I don’t like about photos on the iCloud, you can’t move everything into a folder and have a clear library. So I’m never sure if something has been added or not until I go check. I prefer the windows method of moving things to that space and removing them from the catch all file. I want to be able to organize/move everything and see a blank slate. That way I know anything there still needs to be organized.

Trash collection was yesterday. I got out the huge black contractor bag I had filled with basement stuff earlier this week. And at the last second, also added two carseats that haven't seen use in a year. I guess I was holding them just in case? Glad they're gone though. They took up a lot of room.
Last week I started clicking unsubscribe for emails from online stores to try to limit the junk that is coming into my email. I'll be honest, I almost feel like I am now getting more emails from these places. How can that be? I know several of the stores had a disclaimer after I unsubscribed that it may take up to two weeks or some arbitrary number of days until it takes affect. IDK, but it annoys me.
Also add in the fundraising email blitz right before the new year from the children's hospital that my kids go to. Seriously, like twenty emails in a week.
I am still planning to get more books out this week.
I went by a thrift store that I hadn't seen before in my neighborhood. It is new, and has a huge "donations welcome" sign. But also no sign about their hours, and I haven't seen it open yet ( I pass it several times a week). Also has a "Everything must go!" sign on it. I'm confused.
Tomorrow my regular thrift is supposed to reopen from their winter break closing, and I'll swing by to ask if they will take the book donations. They're small and may not want hundreds of kid books.

Some around here are just for kids.
